Nonek Posted November 21, 2016 Share Posted November 21, 2016 Watching Smiley's People, the old Alec Guinness John LeCarre spy drama, it always surprises me with old television how reticent the soundtracks are, sparse and almost unused so that when a few notes or bars are played they feel very effective. Comparatively television nowadays, like society I suppose, has become very loud and rather indistinct. 1 Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin. Tea for the teapot! [Ron Thornton, Babylon 5 visual effects designer dead Ron Thornton, an Emmy-winning visual effects designer, supervisor and producer who worked on such shows as Babylon 5 and Star Trek: Voyager, has died. He was 59. Thornton, often credited with bringing the power of CGI to television visual effects, died Monday at his home in Albuquerque, N.M., after a short battle with liver disease, his friend, veteran VFX supervisor Emile Smith, told The Hollywood Reporter. Thornton received his Emmy for the 1993 telefilm Babylon 5: The Gathering (the pilot for the series) and also was nominated for his work on episodes of Star Trek: Voyager and Buffy the Vampire Slayer and on the 2002 telefilm Superfire. In 1991, the London native was working with innovative rock star and multimedia artist Todd Rundgren on a computer-animated short film when he was approached by the producers of the space opera Babylon 5, then in development. His collaboration with Rundgren led Thornton to suggest using computers for the effects on the show. He created a one-minute video of proposed effects for the series, and that was instrumental in Babylon 5 selling to Warner Bros. Television in July 1992. The series aired from 1994-'98 on the Prime Time Entertainment Network and TNT. Thornton formed Foundation Imaging to continue creating the visuals for Babylon 5 and served for four years as the series' special effects designer. He went on to supervise the CG visual effects for such Star Trek shows as Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise. His recent work included effects work on the 2012 pilot for ABC's Nashville and producing the web series Talking Tom and Friends in Vienna. In 1987, Thornton began to experiment with consumer-level computer hardware to create 3D computer graphics for pre-visualizing FX shots. Smith pointed out that Thornton, whom he considered his mentor, "pioneered the movement away from the expensive, mainframe-based CGI solutions to more affordable desktop hardware and software, offering legions of self-taught and hobbyist artists the chance to progress into professional animation and visual effects. Many were mentored by Thornton himself." Thornton, who studied at West Kent College, began his entertainment career at the BBC, where he created props and miniatures for the sci-fi shows Dr. Who and Blakes 7. Hiro Protagonist Posted November 30, 2016 Share Posted November 30, 2016 Been watching a few series over the past few weeks. American Horror Story - Season 6. Enjoyed this season. At first was a little confused with episode 1 but then realised they were making a documentary. Loved how they did 'Season 2' of Roanoke halfway through the season and it kept changing with so many people wanting to see the 'house'. Also loved the spirit chaser TV crew at the end as well. Brimstone Show from the '90s with a dead cop returning from Hell. John Glover as the Devil is perfect and his sarcasm and one liners were hilarious. Cancelled after one season but couldn't see it lasting anyway. It was getting a bit monotonous by the end with the cop hunting down the escaped spirits. Camelot Really enjoyed this and shame it was cancelled after one season. The season ends but you could see where this was going if they continued with it. Channel Zero Anthology TV show about creepy horror stories from the Internet, 4Chan, reddit makes its way to the small screen. Didn't realise there was a name for it - Creepypasta. Season 1 was about Candle Cove and thought it was quite good. Containment Virus outbreak and a wall is built around Atlanta to contain it. It was cancelled after one season but Season 2 sounded interesting if it had been renewed. This show is a remake of the Belgium show Cordon which I have and will watch later as it continues on with a second season. So it will be good to see how the Belgium show continues with its story. Goliath Courtroom drama in and outside the courtroom. Thought William Hurt was terrific in this. The Night of This was great. Mini-series of 8 episodes and no idea where it was going until the final episode. I was hooked on every episode and It ends really well imo. The Strain - Seasons 1-3. Quite enjoyable. Ive never watched Supergirl but the fight scenes alone in Flash are making me reconsider that. But how does he know that happened? None of the other people who'd had their history changed (like Diggle) knew it. Stein didn't totally know it (he knew his history was changing but not why) and he's a time traveler. I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? In addition, when Barry got back from Flashpoint Cisco was already mad at Barry- because he wouldn't go back in time and save his brother. The Earth-2 characters from last year also remembered the pre-Flashpoint version of reality. Not sure if you're watching LoT but Stein likely changed his own future by telling his younger self to appreciate his wife more a couple of (LoT) episodes ago, so his new daughter is probably not to do with flashpoint. That also has some relevance since Sara et al getting annoyed at Barry for changing time is deeply ironic- Sara herself tried to change time multiple times to save her sister despite what she said. Barry's meddling occurs ~15 years prior to current events, and Stein's daughter is pretty clearly more than 14 years old; so can't be a result of Barry's interference. Presumably something has Happened to Stein's wife given his daughter's reaction to him mentioning her, and that could be flashpoint related- more likely it's dramatic irony such as her dying in childbirth though. Nonek Posted December 2, 2016 Share Posted December 2, 2016 Columbo Season Two: Such fantastic performances from the guest stars, I was especially surprised by Robert Culp, he never really shone for me on I Spy or anything else really, but here he gave an absolutely barnstorming outing. This is one show that i'm surprised has not been revived, but could you find an actor who specialised in such a self effacing role, and one where the protagonist almost never judges the antagonist? Indeed I only saw him lose his temper once in the series, in a scene with Leonard Nimoy, who as usual beyond Star Trek made a great cameo. Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it?
