What are you playing right now?

The thread to discuss any game you might be playing right now. Last posts are about a game I... don't actually know what games they're talking about but it is what they're playing right now.

Sounds like how I felt about XCOM, hated it whenever I had to do any UFO mission larger than a medium (or alien bases, etc). Alien architecture is both boring and terrible to play. I wish the game was just the urban abduction maps forever.

Worse actually, think of the large UFO mission, and now have you hunting for quest items across those - possibly across 4 floors. And because people complained that it was boring to just run around an empty map in a turn based game trying to figure out where that last item is, have the devs decide to add infinite reinforcements. Then have those reinforcements be chryssalids on steroids and spawn within charge range.

That is BAD design indeed. shocked.gif

Edit: As for Underrail, i'm waiting for the actual release. Just don't have time for alpha/beta access games right now.

Besides Hard West, which I'm discussing in the Hard West thread, oddly enough, I've been playing Vendetta: Curse of Raven's Cry.  For those not familiar, this is the re-release of Raven's Cry, the pirate RPG that released at the end of January horribly broken and flat out unfinished.  They released it as a "new game" rather than an update to the original game supposedly because they added so much to the game that it was like a new game, though in reality it was almost certainly as a shady way to try to get rid of all the negative reviews they had gotten for the broken mess that released at the beginning of the year.  As one of the saps that bought the original game I got a free upgrade to the "new game".

It's still the same game as before, just not horribly broken any more and with more stuff to do, even if it's just picking a few plants, killing some wildlife, or finding a treasure chest in some cases (the original had plenty of areas that were essentially empty with no one to talk to and nothing to do).  It also feels like there are slightly more character models in the game, though I could be mistaken, it's been a while.  The on-foot combat is still quite clunky.  It works okay when you're fighting human enemies, particularly in small numbers, then you can parry, attack, and use special moves as intended.  When fighting a large crowd it's kind of necessary to cheese the system and exploit the character's health regenerating up to 50% when your weapon is put away.  So I wind up getting a few stabs in, running and putting my sword away while I regen, then going back into combat, lather, rinse, repeat, until the crowd is sufficiently thinned out that it's manageable to fight them without cheese.  Fighting animals is hilariously bad as a lot of the animals are quite low to the ground and the sword swings, which work fine at hitting humans, often go right over them, especially if you're fighting on a downslope.  The character animations are stiff and the dialogue is of fanfic quality.  I'll give them points for ambient sounds, especially the bird sounds.  Those really make you feel like you're in a tropical setting.  The best parts of the game are the naval battles.  They're not as graceful as in AssCreed Black Flag, but in some ways more satisfying because the game doesn't hold your hand and give you a giant indicator of exactly where your cannonballs will hit, instead you need to judge the distance yourself and figure out the right angle to fire the cannons at, taking into account that cannonballs, chainshot, and grapeshot all have different amounts of drop over distance.  I really enjoy that part of it, especially now that I got my grubby little hands on a Man o War.

I'm having a blast with it, I played over 16 hours over the weekend and am eager to play more.  It's one of those games that really isn't good, but, for whatever reason, I really enjoy playing.  I think part of it is that I can find humor in cheesing the on-foot combat system and the hilariously bad dialogue.  Also, I just really like pirate games, particularly ones where you play a proper scumbag of a pirate, not the bogus Hollywood romanticized rough exterior with a heart of gold fare we usually get.  I mean, the main character is a ****ing ***hole and he pulls plenty of moves that would make the "progressives" turn various shades of red, it's great and it's how it should be.  It's a pirate game, you're not supposed to be a nice person.  Also, you encounter some really absurd things.  They never fixed females in the game peeing while standing up, which is great because it's hilarious (Maybe Reality Pump are super into gender equality?  If men can pee standing up, why can't women...  other than the biological reasons  ).  I once came across a dude peeing off a balcony and a guy below him at ground level scrumming the floor in the same spot the guy was taking a leak on.  I wish I had taken a screenshot, it was magnificent.  I wonder if that was random chance that came together or if the devs specifically put those 2 characters doing that there, I hope it's the latter.  There is a giant tower on one island, takes like 5 minutes to walk up the stairs to the top, and it seems to have no purpose other than there's a dude at the very top right at the edge with his back turned to you, perfectly positioned for you to push him off the edge and watch him plummet.  It also helps that the naval combat is legit fun and I can just roam the seas in my Man o War spreading terror across the Caribbean.  Good times.

Edit:  When I get home, I'll up the ante by sailing in my Man o War while listening to Manowar headbang_emoticon_by_d3monthesicko.gif

Tried to finally get my NCR run for New Vegas with an EW build, but this is now the second time that that sort of characterbuild somehow corrupts my saves the minute I arrive at gun runners (both quick and manual -- auto is somewhere too far behind from where I am to trudge through everything again to see if it would work now). Guess there's some sort of karmic law that prevents me from doing this.

So as of now... playing nothing at the moment.

Uncharted Collection.  Felt a bit wooden when i started with u1, but now i'm back in them and loving everything all over again. The best time i have is rediscovering treasures that i only remeber the general location of. So i a make a lot of circles around maps. :ninja: Also the U4 MP beta is just around the corner. Can't wait for that.

What exactly happens? I've played New Vegas easily between 500 to 900 hours (due to modding, duh), and I've never had a savegame corrupted. Are you using any mod that might do deeper changes or is the savegame "locked up" in loading screen?

The game just stucks on loading screen (for forever, and doing a CTRL-ALT-DEL shows a message - in the task manager or whatever it is called - that the game isn't responding). It has only happened with an EW build (just recently and the same a few years back when I last tried). I also play the game "vanilla" (mods have seemed to offer more hassle than worth in the past so I stopped trying) so there're no extra bugs coming from that route.

You should at least use New Vegas anti-crash and the 4GB ram patch. To fix your savegame, try to start a new game, then quit back to main menu and then reload your savegame. Based on various reports, this should get your savegame working again.

Batman: Arkham Knight. The game is amazing. By far my favorite game of the Arkham series - the combat is polished up to perfection with just the right amount of complexity and fluidity, the biggest change seems to be that it never takes control away from you for long while doing normal strikes as opposed to the previous Arkham games so everything feels a lot faster and more responsive. Definitely a fan. The way quests are even more integrated into the game's world, how gliding feels even more satisfying and how Batmobile serves as yet another way to make the game more varied, I'm definitely a fan. And then it crashes and I feel sour.

Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition. First of all, the music.

Seriously, just... That music. Second, it's a satisfying albeit repetitive hack and slash with a pretty nice story, fun protagonist (as opposed to War, Death actually has a personality) and gorgeous scenery.

Baldur's Gate - started replaying Infinity Engine games. Got stuck at Firewine ruins dungeon and I do believe I'll skip it, but ... What the ****, Bioware? I never harmed you in any way. I'm willing to bet that 90% of millennial generation which dislikes RPGs played Baldur's Gate and got to Firewine ruins, which ruined the entire genre for them. Damn ruins.

Speaking of mods, since you seem to be on top of the matter, is there any easy way to add some better textures to freshen up the look. I'm such a two-left-handed with these things that I can't make this or that about mod managers and the like... It used to be that you just had to download and put stuff in the dedicated folder, but now it seems that you are directecd to other mods that require other mods that require other mods that require some sort of tool feature I can't make anything of to work.

Did they fix the awful sea battles where you had to wait for 5 minutes for your ship to turn around because of the wind?

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

This has happened to me as well many times on my previous computer. I managed to solve it (well, work around it) by starting a new game and once you're "inside the game" so to speak, then load the save. That always worked for me.

It's a hassle though, but...

The sea battles seem like they're the same as before, as far as I'm concerned they didn't need fixing.  Are you expecting a frigate or a galleon to turn on a dime?  I think the ship movement is fine, ships require some time to turn around, particularly larger ones.  I can turn my Man o War 180° in less than 30 seconds if I slow 'er down, that seems reasonable enough to me.  Sure, if you're going full sail it takes longer, but that's kind of how physics works.

I seem to remember fixed winds which gave the upper hand to the enemy, this is one of those realism vs reality debate. I thought that naval battles in AC were great because your range of mobility didn't fall so low that you were stuck in high seas waiting for the winds to change (which would take forever sometimes) In terms of options: fighting took longer because of it and it sometimes completely hampered any confrontation; it also made escaping difficult and lengthy. I didn't like that my best option at that point was to go back to an earlier save and that became a standard for a lot of naval battles.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

Escaping can still take a while, frustratingly long in some cases.  Sometimes it's useful to come at your enemy in a bid to escape if that's the way the wind is blowing, then you'll have a head of steam as you go past them and they'll take a while to turn to catch the wind and pick up speed.  It's useful to max out the skill that lets you spot ships from further away early on while all you have is a schooner so that you can avoid sea battles until you get a more powerful ship.  I'm cruising the seas in a Man o War now, so fleeing is not something I even consider any more, it's the other ships that need to try to flee before I put 'em in Davy Jones' Locker.

The Nexus Mod Manager is pretty easy to use, actually. It does all the work for you.

Regarding textures, you can try this one- makes many of the NPCs look better than in Fo4, imo (stiff animations remain, though). This one is for weapons and this one for clothing / armor. This one here is for power armors- the mod name is stupid and the screens are kinda bad (imo), but ingame it looks pretty good. All these texture mods are lore-friendly. They look good AND keep the vanilla feeling of the game (which is very important to me personally).

Try out the Nexus Mod Manager- download the files via the program ("Download with Manager" button on the mod page) and then activate them. That's it, no additional manual work needed. If you don't like something,  you deactivate the mod and all the related files are removed- means again no manual work needed.

/Edit: Two screens out of my game just for show. Not all NPCs look this good, but most of them. All in all, it's a huge improvement over the default, though.

I kinda got them while talking, so they look a lil dumb on the screens. :p

Gamebryos biggest issue (aesthetically at least) was definitely faces. Something Bethesda really nailed in Fallout 4 luckily... And with the proper mods New Vegas can look really awesome too.. Especially the Fallout Character Overhaul mod, to add to what Lexx showed;

If you can get it to work with New Vegas Redesigned 3 + slap on the texture mods and a light enb - then it looks almost modern.

Soooo, thanks to melkathi I stopped being such a chicken in Mordheim and actually did the first campaign mission.

So yeah...maybe I should've done it a bit earlier as "steamrolling" would have been an understatement (my Warband's rating was around 1100 vs the mission's 700). I think I took a few arrows to the (armored) knee but that was about it. The impressive unit they have at the start scratched  armor of Clara-the-tank (Sister Superior built for tankiness) a little bit but my Impressive together with the "Dramatis Personae" provided for the mission (basically another Impressive with slightly less health and a more damage) took it down in no time at all (I think 4 hits that connected were all it took). Then the rest of my Warband piled into the Cathedral and curbstomped everything in there...

The biggest challenge ended up being getting to the tower bell... Apparently heavily armored units tend to have some trouble jumping over gaps and climbing onto things. Who'd have expected... (never bothered me in Skyrim! ;)) So I guess that giving the item I needed to cleanse the tower bell to the "Dramatis Personae" might not have been such a great idea as it ended up taking me like 5 or 6 pretty boring turns to get over the gap on the first floor (during which the rest of the Warband was mostly busy playing cards or being generally bored) because she fell down twice while trying to jump over the gap, thankfully I got lucky on the cimbing part a turn later.

Pretty sure there must have been quite a bit of reinforcements spawned by then, only one managed to make it into reach of my Warband though, poor Chaos dude found out 7 vs 1 aren't really great odds...

EDIT: damn, those are some pretty F:NV screenshots...

Yeah, I got stupidly unlucky with those reinforcements. Single chaos dude rushed in from a direction I wasn't expecting and one hit, critted my purifier, killing her just as I was about to cleanse the bell :p

Next mission is actually easier.

But think that climb is bad? Wait till you head to the bridge.

Act 1 for Sisters is fairly easy if you have outleveled it, as their difficulty lies in the impressive and tracking down where you need to go. Except for the Library. Be ware :p

Fun part is that as the Cult of the Possessed you play the mission that leads to the Sisters having to do the purifying in the first place.

More Wasteland 2.  In Rodia, trying to get the mayor's son in charge.

I hate when my party members go rogue.  I had to re-load (so sue me) a couple of times because they kept hitting a NPC I wanted to keep alive when they went rogue.  So annoying.

Started a proper playthrough of ICY.

Quite compelling post apocalyptic little rpg. And I like the fact that it isn't the usual "wasteland" scenario. I currently mostly use bow and arrow. It means I can keep my bullets for trading for fuel and medicine. The Family have some good hunters, and I myself am a decent archer and hunter, so we are doing good when it comes to food.

Quite refreshing that nobody in the party has tried to use me as a shrink yet and/or tried to sleep with me - as would be the case in so many other rpgs :p

I got hoodwinked into an ambush and found myself facing 2 frigates and 2 schooners out on the open sea.  All 4 of those vessels were smaller than mine, but 4 on 1 is still a pretty bad situation to face, even when you're at the helm of a powerful warship.  I gotta give the enemy credit, they opened up on me with quite a few salvos of grapeshot and decimated my crew, which severely hampered the reloading speed of my cannons, reducing the rate at which I sent 32-pounders at their hulls.  The serpent, she took quite a pounding during that battle and it cost me a pretty penny to get 'er fixed up, but I got the satisfaction of sending all 4 of those bastards to Davy Jones' Locker.  The next step is to track down the guy who set me up and stick a blade through his belly.
