Do we know what the animal companions for rangers are yet?

Given their melee focus I presume they'll be fairly big (a wolf, for example), plus I suppose you don't want to get eye-strain looking for your scorpion animal companion, 1 x 1 pixel big.

Having said all that, can we have some unusual / exotic ranger pets?

How about a flightless bird? (ever seen an Ostrich kick someone, wow they're vicious). Or a giant porcupine that fires quills? Or even, if you want to get really exotic, a sort of myconid or bio-vegetable companion. Could a God-like ranger be able to have a sort of spectral companion, animals imbued with souls?

I hope you get my drift. Just not the usual panther / wolf trope.

Edit - this was inspired by the musketeer / chicken picture in the weapons and armour thread. I just think taking a stiletto to tropes is cool - my conquistador / ranger with a long wheel-lock running around with a loyal attack-ostrich is where I need to go with this. So is a creepy godlike ranger with a soul-infused attack mushroom.

Cheers

A toxaxl, looks similar both to a lemur and to a weasel, has a prehensile tail, and is an expert at climbing trees and grasping objects. Right quick too. can be trained to sit on your shoulder and follow some commands.fairly long and thin enough to go into cramped spaces, Incontinent and unappreciated indoors because of this and its smell.

"Forsooth, methinks you are no ordinary talking chicken!"

I think a raptor would be cool

Yes, well, um, no.

AFAIK Eternity is not going to be a sugary high-fantasy like "World of Warcraft".

It would be of small avail to talk of magic in the air...

A great Ape might be nice, but thinking of something more unique what about a man or woman? Are Homo Sapiens somehow unsuitable as companions? Morte as the Nameless One's familiar was a fine companion, perhaps Poe might do something similar.

Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.

I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin.

No I meant a dinosaur raptor. Though... elemental wolves could be cool...

Frost Wolf

Cinder Wolf

Stone Wolf

...

.....

Volt Wolf

I guess an elemental golem in animal form now that I think about it o.O

volt wolf = pikachu

The words freedom and liberty, are diminishing the true meaning of the abstract concept they try to explain. The true nature of freedom is such, that the human mind is unable to comprehend it, so we make a cage and name it freedom in order to give a tangible meaning to what we dont understand, just as our ancestors made gods like Thor or Zeus to explain thunder.

I'm still voting for honeybadger. Of course, it would probably break free of the game code's constraints and somehow become the antagonist of the main plot.

At the very least, it would ignore all commands in combat, and have a chance to simply slaughter your own party at any moment, just because it felt like it.

It would kill its own Ranger master, and still live on somehow.

Should we not start with some Ipelagos, or at least some Greater Ipelagos, before tackling a named Arch Ipelago? 6_u

The "supernatural event" our main character witnesses at the beginning of the PoE story is actually just a honey badger caring.

I'd still like a gelatinous cube pet ... that's not Ranger-ry enough tho, I suppose. :p

...I'd still like a cat-influenced companion. Doesn't have to be a huge panther. Could be an ocelot. or Puss N Boots. A talking cat with attitude that would bicker with my Ranger every time it's summoned. Yes, that's what I want.

I'm not into birds as pets ... but if I have to have one, could it be something like a vulture, instead of the usual hawk/eagle?

I don't think ranger companions are 'summoned' - I think they're permanently there.

+1 for honeybadger.

A Cassowary would be fun for a flightless bird with slashing damage

All cassowaries are usually shy birds of the deep forest, adept at disappearing long before a human knows they are there.

Sounds good for a ranger companion

A claw is on each second finger.

A cassowary's three-toed feet have sharp claws. The second toe, the inner one in the medial position, sports a dagger-like claw that is 125 millimetres (5 in) long. This claw is particularly fearsome since cassowaries sometimes kick humans and animals with their enormously powerful legs.  Cassowaries can run up to 50 km/h (31 mph) through the dense forest. They can jump up to 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) and they are good swimmers, crossing wide rivers and swimming in the sea as well.

Yep - it'll do.
