Neverwinter Nights 2 or Dungeon Siege 3?

If you want to play the better game, buy neverwinter Nights 2 + the expansions. I believe they can be bought on gog.com.

Absolutely, I have played both and enjoyed both but NWN2 is vastly superior

Depends on the type of game you want to play.  If you want a more traditional story-driven RPG then NWN2 is the way to go.  If you're looking for more of a loot em' up then Dungeon Siege 3, although it's not exactly a traditional Diablo-esque loot em' up and fairly story-driven in its own right.  Overall NWN2 will give you significantly more hours of playing time, especially with the expansions and all the mods out there.  I like both games, but if I didn't already own them, then NWN2 would easily be my higher priority to purchase.

Neverwinter Nights 2 for the expansions, the wealth of user-made campaigns, and the modding scene. OC is forgettable, really, though not awful.

Well, going through Act 1 of the OC IS pretty awful.

@OP. It depends, if you're going to play both games anyway, you can beat DSIII a lot faster (around 15hours + 4-5 with expansion, depending on how much time you take), so you might get that out of the way first.

Actually, if you can get both cheap, it's probably not a bad idea to buy them play NWN2, and switch to DSIII from time to time when you hit a snag.

Yeah, I have NEVER been able to go straight through NWN2 OC, I always get burned out part of the way through, partly because the game kind of drags through the middle part, and partly because it's a rather long game.  At that point I need to take a break for a while and some DS3 is not a bad idea to fill that time.

Aye, howlongtobeat.com says that NWN2 OC is around 55-60 hours long

NWN2 is the epitome of a decent but not great party-based old-school-ish CRPG, so that's the game to go for if you're hungering for more in the mold of other Bioware / Obsidian / Black Isle / etc games and you've already played them all. DS3 is an action RPG through and through but it's a weird one. If you have an open mind then it can be a good romp, if you're wanting more of the same of Diablo or even older DS's not so much.

If you can get the NWN2 expansions, then those are in a different league. Storms of Zehir is fun and pretty unique, Mask of the Betrayer is one of the best RPGs in the last ten years.

Storm of Zehir wasn't bad, but it was more of a spiritual successor to Icewind Dale than a real expansion for NWN2. I think it would have beenbetter recieved if it had come before Mask of the Betrayer.

Does anyone know if many people still play and build things for NWN2?

I'd think so, I know that the community for NWN is still active and, even though it was smaller, a fair number of people who worked with NWN did things for NWN2 as well.

In fact, there's a group of people that have been hard at work to make a Baldurs Gate module for NWN2, and they've been at it for years, and it's still not finished yet. They should be finished this year, though.

I'm really curious to see how it will turn out.

NWN2 hands down. OC isn't great, but is pretty good if you are ok with some horrible trash mobs during the first act. MotB is an excellent story that surpasses PST IMO. SoZ is closer to IWD, but is pretty good if you like those types of games.

Make sure you install Kaedrin's PRC if you go for NWN2.

Like others have mentioned NWN2's main campaign ranges anywhere from bland to awful depending on your tolerance for generic fantasy tropes.  It's better than NWN1's terrible OC, but that's not saying much.  Storm of Zehir introduces some interesting new gameplay for the series (full party building, overland map, more an interesting dialogue system) but I had no interest in role-playing a pseudo merchant which the game sort of forces you to do.  The star here is Mask of the Betrayer.
