Walsingham
...I just thought UI'd drop you a line to set you straight on something. Hope you don't mind. All this putting scary death images on things. Reminding me I'm going to die doesn't make me more responsible, and determined to straighten up and fly right, eat healthily or pay my taxes. In fact it's the exact opposite of what you The Government should want me to see. See you on Thursday for the football. Wals. Edited February 20, 2013 by Walsingham 1 "It wasn't lies. Nonek
Remember, for each fifteen cigarettes that you smoke, a mutation will occur in the body and mutations can lead to cancer. Or ocassionally becoming an X-Man, but that's really rare. 2 Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin. Tea for the teapot! Amentep
Not a fan of it; seems that most people who buy a product would just be encouraged to move it out of its original packaging than quit buying the product. Also I'm not a fan of using the legal system to try to effectively ban legal things. I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

You may not have heard, but now they want to put images on fizzy drinks, and I guess condoms, and probably ostriches. Ah yes, it's a slippery slope to total totalitarian nanny-state control., I've heard that one before. Except the evidence for the health hazards of tobacco are by now extremely well researched and documented. You can't ban it, because it's too easy to produce, but you can discourage it. No, this would be true enough, if it weren't for the fact that tobacco (and alcohol) is ADDICTIVE. That means sometimes people need help, and personal responsibility can;t (always) be counted on. Hurlshort
The bigger concern is how alcohol and tobacco negatively affect those who come in contact with you. But the warning labels don't really help with that.

Gorth
People love to control others and tell them what to do. It is about power. Plain and simple. Two people go into a room. One is a smoker, one is a non-smoker. Which one is the tyrant, the one that want the non-smoker to suffer through passive smoking or the non-smoker because he wants the smoker to stop it? It doesn't matter what you do, you are going to force a decision on one of them. I for one favour the one that doesn't really have a choice. “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. AGX-17
Health oriented stuff I can see, but death images/reminders of impending death for encouraging paying taxes? Wat? He's just spouting hyperbolic reactionary BS. Like all the conservatives who went out and bought extra guns when Obama was re-elected in preparation for the coming war for the abolition of Obama's socialist Kenyan muslim atheist takeover. Keeping in mind that no actual socialist on Earth considers Obama a socialist, or any of his policies socialist. Obama is still filling his administration with Wall Street insiders just as a GOP president would. He's letting Wall Street off scot-free, just like any good GOP candidate would.People love to control others and tell them what to do. It is about power. Plain and simple.Ignoring, of course, the scientific and medical consensus that smoking is terrible for your health and incurs huge cost burdens on the public who have to pay for smokers' healthcare. And the class-action lawsuit filed by most of the US states against the Tobacco industry in which the courts ruled that cigarettes are deadly, designed to be addictive and that the Tobacco companies had to pay recompense to the states for all the healthcare costs incurred as a result of tobacco products designed to be more addictive, and more deadly as a side effect (i.e. the addition of ammonia to quicken the nicotine's crossing of the blood-brain barrier in order to increase the probability of addiction and the frequency of cravings.) Unfortunately, the world is full of other people. Economists refer to this phenomenon as harming others as a result of economic activity as "external costs." Conservative economists like to bury their heads in the sand of right-wing political zeal and say that external costs don't exist. They'll maintain that water is a naturally combustible substance rather than admit that corporate industrial pollution caused the Cuyahoga River Fire. Yes, that river in Ohio that caught fire because of all the industrial pollutants industry was dumping into it. It's events like that that forces government to expand to protect the citizenry, it was Nixon who signed the Environmental Protection Act into law, after all. And it goes to show just how lazy today's Americans are about politics. It was public outcry over the environment that forced Nixon's hand, but there's no similar mass movement against the religion of the free market and all the ills its caused over the past 40-50 years (reminder: Under Eisenhower, taxes on the top 1% were 90%, and that's the golden age the tea partiers and rightists want to return to, it was 70% before Reagan dropped it into the 30s and all these problems started popping up along with Alan Greenspan's Ayn Randian sociopathic policies.) Even if there were, it would have to be massive to overcome the influence of big money on politicians. No private citizen has a right, or a privilege, to infringe upon the health and well-being of others except in self-defense, neither do corporations, even now that the conservative majority on the SCOTUS has ruled that corporations are human beings. Guard Dog
Ignoring, of course, the scientific and medical consensus that smoking is terrible for your health and incurs huge cost burdens on the public who have to pay for smokers' healthcare.Right there is what is so insidious about government run healthcare. It makes a public interest in your private activites. I can see why the US Government wants it so bad. It is the ulitmate backstage pass into everything. Ban smoking, can't have that it makes you sick and we have to pay for it. Ban guns, you poor dears might get injured and we have to pay for it, ban red meat we might have to pay for your heart surgery one day. Not a soul in the government, ANY government gives a damn if you live another day. All they want is control over you if you do. You want people to live healthy? Make them pay for their own god damned healthcare. THAT will get their attention. No one should be asked to pay for poor decisions that someone else made. 1 "While it is true you learn with age, the down side is what you often learn is what a damn fool you were before" Thomas Sowell
