Update #18: George Ziets, Paladins, Add-Ons, Rewards, and More!

Recommended Posts

I will be the discordant voice here...

While I am happy that Obsidian considers adding to its design team a valuable and experienced designer (and for that reason, I wish we will reach the 2.8M), I am more wary (to say the least) toward the addition of two new classes.

New classes... again... Once again, the stretch goals unveiled are only about mechanisms, old school features, instead of offering story and exploration oriented features : increased world size, new city, new questlines...

I know that story remains a key objective of PE. Nevertheless, how does it come that Obsidian prefers to focus its communication and its aims regarding the develoment of the game on mechanics ?

There were able to offer very story oriented features in former updates : look at sretch goals 1.6M and 2.2M. I wish Obsidian would offer new updates like these ones. After all, wasn't the Shadowrun Returns additional city stretch goal one of the most exciting offered by this project ?

Based on previous comments on this update, it looks like adding new classes generate quite an appeal in the community. Yet, I think there are many people that would love to have more story oriented stretch goals. I do not blame Obsidian for adding some mechanism related stretch goals, I reproach them to do ONLY mechanism related goals.

So I hope we will be able to add Mr Ziets to the team, but I also wish for story oriented stretch goals. Maybe a 3M USD new goal ?

I'm almost completely tapped out. I can't conceive of anything more they could do to get me to pledge more at this point, but I'm always looking and seeing what they do next. I have to say that I think this update is awesome. Probably my favorite update of any I've seen so far.

As a sort-of aside to this update, is there any chance of being let in on how well the PayPal side is doing?

I'm not expecting huge amounts of dollars to be there, probably even less than $100k (utter guess), but still somewhat curious since if I recall correctly, the total there will be added to the KS total for the purposes of stretch goals?

Edit: lol, less than $100k, not less than $100

Well i'm one of the folks who wouldnt shut up about George Ziets, Guess i get my wish and i'm rather pleased at the moment. Fingers crossed we reach that stretch goal, but fingers crossed even more that George stays at Obsidian after Project Eternity. Loosing him again would just suck so bad :/

Ziets is a story oriented stretch goal, as far as I am concerned.

Because Obsidian bases their story around the mechanics and concepts of their games. So, most of these stretch goals DO add story. Not to mention every penny you donate makes the world bigger and richer with content.

probably because the mechanics and world lore are what they're working on figuring out now, more than the story? this is really at the very beginning of the project, so they don't have all of those things figured out.

and as i said before, with each stretch goal the story DOES get increased. feargus said this two weeks ago (or something like that) more money = more story. it's that simple.

[Chanters] seem to be less "tra-la-la lute playing during battle" and more "recitations of ancient epic poems that retain connections to mysterious sources of mystical power.".
This is definitely the best thing about them. It calls to mind epic poetry of the classical age, which appeals to me greatly. I've never really been a huge bard fan, but I honestly think I'll have to try a Chanter along the lines of a mythical 'Homer' or 'Virgil' character.

There was this: "Don't miss the update on Thursday - Josh will be talking lore, and our first screenshot will be revealed. Everyone at the studio is really excited to show you what we've been working on."

If Josh is going to be talking Lore I think that will have you covered. There's been lots of good stuff during these update in my opinion, especially for a game which is effectively in early pre-production. They are by all accounts still laying the groundwork for everything, but it already sounds fantastic.

George is a story based stretch goal, and probably one of the best things ever if you are a story guy. He is by far one of the best story guys that I've ever worked with.

And, oh yeah, we aren't done yet. :)

I'm a bit torn on the paladins. Priest description suggested that they could specialise in spell casting or melee fighting, the latter fitting perfectly for a paladin I think, so I kind of feel like adding a separate class for it would be be unnecessary. On the other hand, they have went with slightly different approach on the paladins than your stereotypical ones, so it might be fine in the end after all.

And that's coming from a guy who's playing mainly paladins whenever he can.

As for the rest of the update, I'm very happy to hear about George Ziets! Now just to get up there...
