More technical limitation than design choice. I think I heard they had problems implementing manual saves and not enough money to get around them. Sure, I would prefer save any time, but as long as it's not more than maybe 15 or 20 minutes playing time apart, I'll live with it. 2 more hours before I can start downloading...
