funcroc
http://www.vg247.com/2009/04/20/rumour-fal...nced-in-london/ http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=23276 http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/58229 http://www.videogamer.com/news/new_fallout..._announced.html Fallout: New Vegas being developed in conjunction with Obsidian. Bethesda has this afternoon announced a brand new Fallout game, called Fallout: New Vegas, planned for release in 2010 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Speaking at an even in London, Bethesda's Pete Hines confirmed the game is not a sequel to Fallout 3, describing is as "simply another Fallout game in the universe". The game is being made in conjunction with Obsidian, maker of classic RPG Neverwinter Knights 2 and the upcoming Alpha Protocol. A number of people who worked on the original Fallout games are now at Obsidian, including current CEO Feargus Urquhart, previously of Black Isle Studios. Hines said at the event: "We're working on another Fallout game with Obsidian Entertainment. You may know that there are guys at that company who worked on the original Fallout games, and we have been working on a new Fallout game with them. It's called Fallout: New Vegas, it's scheduled for 360, PS3 and PC at the end of next year, and that is just about all we're going to say about it for now. "It is not the sequel to Fallout 3. It is simply another Fallout game in the universe. It has no impact whatsoever on what Todd Howard and his guys are working on. This was just a great opportunity, we thought, to work with some guys who know Fallout. Fergus and those guys were there in the early days of Fallout. A cool opportunity to do something unique with those guys, and something we've really been enjoying working with them on. "We'll be doing the full reveal when they're ready to show what they've been up to, but that's not quite yet., Perhaps some time later this year." While Hines was careful not to reveal any details on the game, he did say that it will be "the same sort of experience", and, when asked about the game engine that will be used, responded: "We'll get into all the specifics on what exactly we're doing a bit down the road, but you can make your own educated guesses on this." Speculating, there was a major settlement in Fallout 2 called New Reno, which was based on the real world place. It was a town dominated by four gangster families. Calling the new Fallout game New Vegas suggests it might be something along those lines. We'll have more as soon as we get it. mkreku
Well, since they're already showing it later this year, it means the engine is done (third party or their own in-house developed engine from another project?). Would it be possible to show it off this year if they had to start making art assets now? I wonder how long they've been working on this already? I would definitely not mind if they used the Fallout 3 (Genome?) engine. It ran silky smooth on my computer and aside from occasional crashes, seems stable enough (with regards to physics, falling through the terrain, general feel etc.). Still GREAT news! The world can never have enough post-apocalyptic games :D I can imagine getting to do an a-bombed Las Vegas must be a playground for the artists. So much inspiration! Seems very generous and brave of Bethesda to invite Obsidian to the Fallout party. I mean, they face a very real risk of being one-upped in their on franchise now! Enoch
Some additional thoughts: We know that it's not going to be a Fallout 3 sequel. But will it be a Fallout 2 sequel? I don't think I'm alone in seeing this as a chance to get the Fallout-3-that-should-have-been. Bethesda did a decent job, particularly in that they nailed the thematic elements that are really at the core of the franchise's appeal. But now we get a chance to see a modern Fallout with: A) a less broken rule system, B) characters that actually inspire some empathy, C) a main storyline that actually makes a tiny bit of sense. Also, does this mean that Obsidianites have been taking "research" trips to Vegas on the company dime? No wonder devs haven't been posting around here very much lately... Tigranes
So that is the weirdest news ever. Kind of sucks if it'll use the old FO3 engine - if you're going to make a spinoff why not make it a bit different from the originals (i.e. Onyx)? Heck it could feature VATS again. Still, this will be... interesting. Especially the specific terms of the 'collaboration'. Enoch
Looks like Obsidian won't be having any financial problems now. Fallout is mainstream now, it'll print money. But they've got to split that take with Bethsoft. Given that the latter is providing the engine and the license to use the Fallout name, they'll probably end up with the bigger slice of the profits. I loved the DC setting for FO3, largely because I'm a local. But FO's heart is in the desert, and it'll be nice to see a wasteland that is a real wasteland. I wanna step out of the vault and see nothing between me and the horizon but a few sun-bleached gecko bones. Also, official forums-- here or Bethesda?
