How weird. I like the name "Dragon Age" a lot more when they added "Origins" behind it. Why is that?!

because it reminds everyone vaguely of the Heroes spin-off called Heroes: Origins that never made it to air because of the writers strike last season?

i dunno.

'Dragon Age' is about as generic fantasy as it gets, but 'Origins' hints at an arc going beyond the first game (that much-vaunted 'epicness' the muppets on the Bio boards are always demanding: "can you make it epic? epic is kewl! i need a game with 50% more epic!")

Kinda like adding 'Episode IV' to 'Star Wars'.

p.s. the hype for a trailer announcement is classic Bio: after all, why give the fans actual details when you can pawn them off with cryptic hints and the prospect of a brief glimpse?

after all, they've managed to run a Dragon Age forum based on a name, three concept sketches and a couple of screenshots from their E3 demo in 2004.

if they can run an entire forum for four years based on that meagre level of info, dribbling out tidbits like a coma patient, why would they go to the trouble of full & frank disclosure now?

I love Volourn so much. Give me a kiss, Volo. :verymad:

'Origins' probably makes sense actually, because the kind of vibe I'm getting is that it's going to have a little bit of 'post-civilisation' about it, not so much the generic fantasy 'there used to be a supar magical golden age before this' but more 'post-apocalyptic' fantasy. So both in terms of hte origins of now and now as a new origin. That sounds a lot more pretentious than I mean. What.

The PR thing *was* lame though, I can't help but think that it was just bad management and they didn't anticipate the trailer being delayed.

The cool thing about the DA forum is that the developers actually participate.

Somehow I didn't think that SpikeTV watchers would be their target audience... Going the Bethesda route, I see

Now, now. Their marketers have carefully analyzed the results from their focus-groups and came to the conclusion that the most important segment with purchasing power are the common plebs, er...i mean the SpikeTV viewers.

I'm thinking that the intern in the marketing department was left on her own for the afternoon. She was drunk and the result was the GENIUS piece of marketing.

How have the masochists on the Bioware DA forum taken this massive slice of anti-climatic pie?

Everyone should read atleast Marx, Orwell and Plato :cat:

But yeah, i have worked at multi-national companies, and have been in contact with their marketing departments. A very cynical and masochistic bunch they were, with the "The customers are usually too stupid to understand what they want anyway"-mantra being handled as a truth, then you know what you're dealing with. And don't get me started on the information system designers and other "Business engineering"-groups.

Bioware's (EA's) marketing department is probably several times smaller of course, but i can certainly detect the same cynical aura with this kind of marketing. Shortsighted "Har-har, well we got you interested, and that is all that matters"-manner like this is detestable, since they basically treat their customers as idiots.

They might be right though. We certainly make their job easy for them. At least as far as marketing video games goes.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

which, not incidentally, are filled with gibbering fanboys like Volourn.

so no wonder Bio treats its customers as mentally sub-normal.

You are right, Volourn. Bioware owes its fanbase nothing, nothing but their livelihood by buying all their past games which has kept them in business. If they keep this up, continuing to piss off the fanbase, the majority of their fanbase will leave them thusly lower sales. Anyhoot, I was expecting this level of bull from Bioware. It doesn't surprise me in the least that they have no compunctions in treating thier fans like ****.

Nah. Just like Star Wars, it'll sell, no matter how "pissed off" fans get, because the majority of the fans of their previous games won't even be following this fiasco online, and thus, aren't affected by it.

Don't mistake hardcore fans (the kind who post online, who follow every bit of detail about a game) with the casual fan, who makes up a bigger percentage of the pie.

I recall reading a comment by a mod over at Bioware commenting that the last time the website was updated, it was updated with less information than there had been previously. Obviously not everyone was expecting a huge update.

Those guys would probably be aghast at how carelessly / inappropriately their names are thrown around.

So what, EA is Big Brother now, or the capitalist superstructure? Good lord, the gaming internet's head has reached a deeper and darker depth of its own ass.

There are some pretty intelligent posters on the Bioware fora, but yes, this was a most pathetic publicity stunt by Bioware.

I was actually pretty excited that there would be a video after all these years of drought. Anyway, the more important question is whether the game will be any good, not Bio's clumsy marketing attempts.
