Kaftan Barlast Posted July 3, 2007 Share Posted July 3, 2007 I was just sitting here in scorching summer heat with my body drenched in sweat and I came to think of Christmas and what it means to different people. Christmas in Sweden has nothing do to with anything religious, it is about decorating your home in red&green, presents, food, fun with relatives you cant stand and of course, the annual Disney christmas special at 3pm. We dont even celebrate Christmas on Christmas, but on the 24th.. and we call it "jul" which is a norse word that doesnt really mean anything. Furthermore, everyone is expected to celebrate it regardless of race, colour or creed. My extended family inconsistently will say a prayer over meals on Christmas, but that's the full extent of it. After that I would go back home and my family would come over and exchange gifts (the one's from Santa came in the morning). The exchanging of gifts during the winter season has been tied by the church to the birth of Jesus, even though the practice is much older It's good advertising by the church to do so, which is what any religion needs to spread. But there is a reason I see it as a fitting time to bring up religion. It's a time spent with family and friends, it's a time of sharing and appreciation for one another. It can be a dark and cold time if spent alone. It's a spiritual time in my eyes. It's when I am most aware of how lucky I am to have people around me that I care about, and that care about me. If you want to see it as an over-comercialized, meaningless holiday created by big companies and the media, orchestrated just so they can squeeze the last few bucks out of you and every other mindless gear slave of the corporate machine, then it will be. If you just see it as a time to get together with family, and exchange gifts with them because they mean a lot to you, then that's what it will be. The whole religious thing doesn't bother me. I have no problem believing Jesus Christ was born around that time anyway (anything else to do with him though? Fairy tales.) Laozi Posted July 3, 2007 Share Posted July 3, 2007 I guess I get caught up in the whole Christmas thing for awhile, but now that it last so long about mid-December I start really getting agitated. Then it takes a careful mixture of booze and solitude to get me the rest of the way through. Its not totally like that the whole time, but alot of days. People laugh when I say that I think a jellyfish is one of the most beautiful things in the world. What they don't understand is, I mean a jellyfish with long, blond hair.
