Playing two alpha/beta games at the moment... PoE - which I really like, and I'm excited to see what changes/improvements will be made in the next few months. The forums remind me why I don't like to participate in betas. Darkwood (Steam) - I haven't gotten very far into it but it's pretty atmospheric. Controls are kinda clunky, though... something I'm sure will be improved. I tried D:OS but couldn't finish it - it was okay for the first map but after that it went downhill.

Actually, the change of term did change everything. Might is an entirely separate concept from strength, in that it also refers to your force of soul/magic/whatever. Might affecting all damage makes sense in context. You want a nuke wizard? It's essential to have enough strength of soul to pull it off. I like it. There were so many dump stats I didn't care about, playing a mage in the IE games. This system goes a long way to eliminating that (though it's not perfect yet - perception/resolve).

- Dialogue: All of the dialogue I've seen has been pretty awesome. Yeah, every line is not 100% pure quotable gold (and I can't name you a game where it is), but I'm not expecting side quests to give me the emotional feels that the main quest and character interaction is going to. The quality really makes me eager to play the main quest and interact with the real party members. - Reactivity and Character Customization: First person I talked to when I created my first character in the beta commented on my region of origin. Can't wait to have the background conversation with Callista when the game comes out. I haven't seen it really in action yet, but the personality trait system promises to be neat. In addition, the conversation options feel distinct but still realistic - I never feel railroaded into a certain personality, which happens a lot to me in other games with dialogue options. - I got a pet piglet for completing a quest. I got a pet piglet for completing a quest. - Chanters. Not how they're balanced, just how they work in general. It's unique and fun. - The lore I've seen so far is top notch. - The graphics are beautiful. And more that I can't remember right now.

Brilliantly, thank you!

I agree with this. Also, all of the female godlike tend to have one head option that's less extreme than the others (wraparound horns for the nature godlike, halo for the moon godlike, the second death godlike/fire godlike option) and that would suffice for default... but every one of the male choices have extremely large horns or other radical features, the death godlike especially so. It's bad enough that I don't think I'll be playing a death godlike when the game comes out like I had planned to. That reminds me - I'd suggest a different order for character creation. Gender -> Race -> Appearance -> Culture -> Class -> Voice.

General Thoughts - Area transition icons take precedence over party members for clicking. Can make it difficult to control battle near the edges of the map. - Ranger pets always have to be last in party? - Items dropped by enemies upon death needs to be easier to spot. In most areas, (like the cave) it's fine, but in grass it can be a problem. - Items dropped by enemies need to show up behind trees/rocks/houses/obstacles. - Normal difficulty is great. - I don't like how characters stick to their original formations if you're only selecting a few characters. I use formations mainly for ease of movement (the narrow, staggered formation just like BG), and a giant L when you select less than all six companions (instead of what should happen, a smaller staggered group) isn't great for movement. - If the mousewheel does something, can you allow us to rebind it? - It took forever for me to find the notification that a quicksave has occurred. Most games put it somewhere near the top of the screen. Could use a less blendy font color, too. - Grey out Stronghold button (don't allow it to be clicked at all) instead of saying "You don't own this yet." Don't want to ruin the surprise for new players. Or not, because I can see issues with greying it out, too. - I like the UI. - I haven't been able to find the number values for my character's personality stats. This is important to me. Am I just missing something? Graphical bugs! - My ranger ended up with my fighter's portrait in those circle portraits that happen when the characters are offscreen. - I lost my ranger pet stamina circle upon loading.

Scouting detection circles show in level up screen.

Done! [Files] DxDiag.txt Edit: The game seems to be holding up fine, now, though. It's been open more than 15 minutes and no crashes. Edit: Nevermind, about 20 minutes in it crashed again.

The title screen is looks great. I'm okay with the UI (though I haven't gotten much of a chance to look at anything beyond a little of the settings menu), and character creation is amazing. Then my game crashes, but it's all good. Crashes are just as exciting during a beta.

[Description of the issue] Crash to desktop after some period of time spent playing. [DETAILED list of steps to reproduce the issue AND what to look for] It seems to happen after some period of time playing (10~15 minutes maybe?) and is preceded by a popup that says "Get Thread Context Failed." It has happened twice while playing a ranger, at different times (once while leveling up, once while idling), and I've attached both crash folders. [Files] 2014-08-18_181448.zip 2014-08-18_183022.zip

Backer Beta: Coming August 18th
Ahvz replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Mine is five minutes fast, too, if that's what you mean. Edit: Probably just our computers out of sync with the rest of reality. -
To the bug report section with you!
-
You'll find a key in your Products tab on your account page on the PoE site when they release it (2:00 PST). Insert key into Steam, download beta, enjoy.
-
If you're lucky, and spam F5 enough, you may be able to catch the keys right when they go out! Everyone should give it a go! (I'm kidding, I don't want a 5pm release time...)

Edit: Ninja'd

I guess too bad for the people in NZ and Japan and such, where 8AM PST is past midnight the next day for them. -
Backer Beta: Coming August 18th

A company stationed in California uses its local time for updates. The horror. -
"Open communication" does not mean the devs have to be at your beck and call. If we don't get the beta in the next 14 hours (August 19th, Obsidian HQ), or no update by the time work's done for the day, there may be cause for complaint. But 10am on the day of isn't an appropriate time to start accusing Obsidian of anything.

Just finished The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett. I enjoyed it, but the ending (actually, everything from the appearance of 'The Warded Man' on) was underwhelming. I'm still debating whether to actually read the next one in the series or not. I've gotten quite a few ideas for what to read next from this thread, though. Thank you to everyone who's posted!

What race will you play as?
Ahvz replied to Barothmuk's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Probably male human Death Godlike for my first serious playthrough, unless something else catches my eye between now and then. During beta I'll try everything out but I'll gravitate towards Orlan and Godlike characters. Maybe Aumaua, too. I don't think I've ever played human in a game where you're allowed to choose other races. -
I'm going to redeem PoE on Steam and then buy it on sale through GOG sometime down the road. Why? 1) Exposure. My friend's feeds will have PoE all over them for at least a few weeks after release. I can't do that with GOG. 2) Ease of use and 'bells and whistles'. Autoupdate, family sharing, cloud saves, screenshot uploads, hour count, being able to add it as my favorite game on my profile, steam overlay... The benefits of GOG have already been covered but I'd buy my secondary copy through them just because it's DRM-free. In any dystopian future where Steam shuts down and still leaves the games client-locked and the client with online check-ins, I'll still have my GOG downloads squirreled away somewhere. Hopefully. Something to note, though, is that there are Steam games that are DRM-free. They're still account tied, and you still have to install them using the Steam client, but afterwards you can do whatever with the files, including running them on a computer without Steam installed at all. GOG's DRM-free installers are still superior for backups, though, because transferring games from computer to computer without proper installation usually isn't a good idea.

I have mixed feelings about romance in games. I've only played two games where I actually enjoyed the romance path/s, and more often than not, I find romances in games (including Baldur's Gate II) to be poorly-written, too short, and not nearly deep enough. To contrast, some of the best romances (and friendships, for that matter) I've ever played were mods. This isn't surprising to me -- a competent mod author has a lot more time on their hands (and motivation!) to write extremely detailed, varied, and deep conversation. They can spend 1,000+ hours on one romance that maybe .5% of the playerbase would even care about. I don't know what your problem with mods is, namelessthree, but I question how much you actually care about PoE's roleplaying content if you want Obsidian - who neither want to nor have the time to, so the final result is going to be sub-par - to cut content to write your romances over letting the community take care of it after the game launches. Surely letting everyone do what they're good at and what they want to do is the optimal solution here? Also, I've seen nothing that's given me the impression of IWD-style lack of party interaction, and I've been lurking for a while.

Isn't it similar to how most people here feel about fully voiced dialogue and CGI cutscenes? They're great if they're there but you'd rather them not take away from the story and gameplay, and that removing them from development can in fact improve the game (in the case of voiced dialogue/CGI, more reacitivity, more choices, and more overall dialogue)?
