I vaguely remember THX-1138 as an interesting movie, can't comment on American Grafitti though... Lucas once told in an interview (sorry, no source) that the first Starwars and Indiana Jones movies were something like a realisation of his childhood fantasies. Perhaps the success of the first movies reflected that, good old fashioned comic book entertainment, made the way he liked it, and it showed. Later, he probably sold out and made movies and tv-series that he expected would sell. Just a thought. Might not be related to truth in any way...

Count Doofus just doesn't sound as menacing as Darth Tyranus...

Will Helena,Bastila's mother, be in the game?

Things worth knowing about trolls. Chapter 1 - The Nature of Trolls Chapter 2 - Troll territories Chapter 3 - What to do if facing a troll Appendix A Chapter 1 - The Nature of Trolls Trolls are beasts, that will jump other posters with (often personal) offending posts. The posts themselves usually have little relevance to the topic. The troll will bitch and moan and generally try it's best to ruin fun for others, by making as much of a nuisance of itself as it can. The commonly accepted theory is, that trolls for various real life (or lack of a real life) are attention seekers. Can be either generally bored or obsessive compulsive in their desire to make other posters lives miserable. Chapter 2 - Troll territories Trolls are often few and far between. It's just that, like the distant howl of a wolf indicates the presence of a wolf, they are more noisy than actually present. Most boards with a certain minimum number of members, seems to attract one or more trolls. Since, however, that the number of trolls doesn't grow proportionally with the number of posters, it is speculated that trolls are highly territorial and doesn't tolerate the presence of other trolls very well. It is not know whether trolls are cannibals or not. Chapter 3 - What to do if facing a troll Remember, that attention is one of the trolls primary motivations. Try ignoring it at first. If you starve it of attention, it might move on to other hunting grounds. Never try to strike back at a troll. If you tear it apart, all the parts will just regenerate and your problem is bigger than it was before. Somebody tried suggesting that you might offer it fish to eat. Perhaps a change of diet might redirect its attention. If the troll is too starved and won't go away, you might have to PM a mod and suggest that the troll population gets regulated. Appendix A Remember that a troll is all sound, it has no teeth. Therefore it should never be taken seriously, no matter how much chest thumping and yelling it does.

Not a bad idea B) Could be a "get two for one" there, making swoopracing more interesting and some practical use for skills. With low repair skill, you can add new bumpers and a pair of velvet dice to the rearview mirror. With high repair skill, you can add shock absorbers, nitro dispensers and optimize the engine etc.

What Planets You Want To See?
Gorth replied to Vanidar Skywalker's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Not anymore... B) -
I still think, this software is trying to tell me something...

How about letting the next version of the board software enforce the FAQ automatically, at least size-wise. Emphasis mine. Swithing off signature viewing in your settings is all nice and easy. Ti's just that some of the people out there have funny and/or intelligent signatures, that it would have been nice to see...

As of now, what are your thoughts on KOTOR II?
Gorth replied to Tyrell's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Slightly off-topic, when does that piece play ? I made a point of keeping my ears open for something that could be considered "Bastilas Theme", but apparantly missed it. Is it a particular event or an ongoing thing ? The only music I noted in the game was Manaan (which grated on my nerves) and the Starforge ambience which was brilliant and spot on for that place Back on-topic, yes, Kotor1 was a bit lacking in the length department. And please, don't extend the game length with pointless walking Otherwise, the game looks pretty much as expected. I was worried at first, until somebody mentioned that they had been concentrating on the Xbox demo for E3. It did look way "less attractive" visually than Kotor1 on the pc. But then, I don't really care about appearances, but ease of use interface and a good story with interesting characters. Less Disney like qualities sounds good (darker ambience), B) ... [begging]Oh, and some wallpaper sized concept art please *hint!* *hint!* [/begging] -

Isn't that encounter (and the crystals) only available after completing all planets, except the unknown one ? Oh, and bring your credit card, that rodians gratitude comes at a price B) He does have some nice items for sale though. Sorry, can't help with a link. I'm willing to swear that I've watched that picture with Atton Rand at least 10 times now. Now that I actually wanted to locate it...

You try saying that to his face

I don't think he got it either... The point was not, to make it intentionally harder to create mods, but not to divert resources from the game into the tools. Let those with spare time on their hands do that. Some games benefit tremendously from mod tools, like multiplayer and coop games. Single player games have very little apart from the odd tweak to equipment and characters to offer (and sometimes the odd bugfix). I've tried plenty of mods for BG2, but apart from the 45+ bugfixes that volunteers created, the only true mod that stayed was "Dungeon Begone" I did a few funny tweaks to Kotor1, mostly adding a big yellow smiley to Bastilas bikini, color changes and suff, but that was only for the fun factor of it. I can't really imagine anything useful for Kotor1, being a very "complete" game in it's own right. If I wanted full fledged mods with levels, maps, quests etc. I would figure out how to use NWN's toolkit, since I already spent my money on that one. I'm pretty sure somebody out there could whip up a lightsaber with sound effects and everything
-
That didn't make a lot of sense Yes, about mod tools Can they make coffee? Do they come in light blue? This thread is only slightly better than the "Can we have mod tools" threads. That doesn't say a lot Those with the necessary skills will eventually get the data formats right and develop tools for it. Might take a while though.

Why are 99% of Twi'leks green?????
Gorth replied to Bantha Fodder's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
Perhaps turning purple is a sideeffect for Twi'leks when they turn to the dark side ? Like humans turning all greyskinned and veiny -
Agreed B) NWN was a wasted of time and money. Tried 1 (one) user made module from the top ten list. It couldn't really be any worse than the OC. It wasn't. Wasn't an improvement either. There are some very useful BG2 mods out there. But I only use the Baldurdash bugfixes, as in those that fixes actual bugs in the game (wrong weapon effects, wrong stats compared to description, stuff like that). No need to spend valueable developer resources on making tools and compilers userfriendly. However, for games like Kotor and Kotor2, it could have been nice with a documented file and model format. That way, people who really wanted, could write the tools for modding. Just look at the sheer volume of Infinity tools out there, once the fileformats got reverse engineered. Odds are though, that games like Kotor2 will not be mod friendly. I don't really care that much either, if just the game is relatively bug free

What used to be a part of crpgs (and probably also rpgs) is, that you, the player identify with your character in the game. I've played through Kotor 5 times now. All combinations of sex and alignment, one of them once more just for good measure (a copycat of my first run through). I had a hard time identifying with my "evil" characters, part because of the poor way "evil" was defined, part because it conflicted with my RL nature. The first part is poor design, but the second part is what makes the game challenging. It gives you the opportunity to do other things than what you would normally do. It doesn't have to be easy. If the game has an option for a player to pick the easy, darkside path or the hard, lightside path, no problem. All the more challenging, and all the more accoring to the Star Wars universe where the dark side is described as the "easy" solution to some problems, at a high cost later. Lightsiders will always feel "constrained" compared to darksiders, if for no other reason, then because they impose some moral values upon themselves. If jedis had started a systematic hunt for and genocide of Siths after one of their victories, the galaxy wouldn't really have changed much, for the jedi would have become the Sith, namechange or not. If the game were to ship with a hard light side path and an easier dark side path, I would still play though both paths for the challenge of it. As for the combat, twitch vs. non-twitch games. Two different interests. Some people likes lots of combat and wants it to be determined by the skill of the player (not the player character, but the player behind the keyboard), others (me included) appreciates the other parts of the game more. And when it comes to combat, we like to have our player characters stats, skills, feats and some dice rolls influence the outcome, not how fast we can move our fingers on the keys
-
Robes are for females. I can understand why jedis fall to the dark side. They dress a lot more stylish How about some npcs in jumpsuits ? Then we can retexture them ourselves, like vault 8 or vault 11... How much work would be involved in some truly spiky and ornamented armour ? Will weapons always be grenades, blades (lightsabers) and pistols/rifles ? Could be nice with a Flail of Skullflattening like the one, the Nazgul leader uses for BGIF* in the last LOTR movie. Or even some serious unarmed combat ? *Bad Guy Impression Factor

Are there new feats? (not force powers)
Gorth replied to Jeremiah's topic in Star Wars: General Discussion
The only thing really worth the effort repairing was Hk-47. Computer use was mostly to save time and/or a bit of effort. Trial and error showed that the most efficient, not to say fastest way to disarm mines was to walk into them. The time it took to recover them wasn't worth the price you could get for selling them. If they had been deadly on the other hand... then demolitions would have been useful. B) But fixing the broken skill system wasn't really the intent of this thread, so yes, things like Dodge, Resist poison etc. could be nice to have things. Not essential, but nice to have. Somebody with a Star Wars d20 care to list which feats weren't implemented in Kotor1 ? -
We'll remember that, DarQue it is then... The problem in a game like Kotor (Kotor2) is the resource cost. Lets say you have 10 miniquests on a planet (completely arbitrary numbers for the sake of argument), and you have 20 different npcs on a that could react to e.g. 2 different outcomes. Even a simple acknowledging the questresult (just a comment, not a dialogue tree) would add 20*10*2 = 400 lines of dialogue that has to be written and having voice overs. Adding a further 4 planets, you get 1600 lines of simple dialogue that needs writing and voice overs. That could be why most towns people have some very bland dialogue and reacts very little to what the player do...

You could almost get the impression that people are using babelfish or some other software when translating Role Playing Game... It is actually intentional, that it is different term from First Person Shooters, Shoot'em ups, Beat'em ups, Hanck'n slash, Adventure games etc. If people wants something different, by all means go and get it. I just don't understand all the preaching for turning each and every other game genre into ones personal genre (not that I don't have unflattering suspicions ) I'm currently too lazy to write up the 250+ lines of text on what makes a crpg a crpg, even too lazy to point to the 10+ threads with similar, often heated discussions. Guys, if you don't like crpgs, but prefer other types of games, why come here in the first place ? It's not as if there has been a lot of quality crpgs released the last 5 years. Definitely not enough to flood the market or piss off those who enjoy other types of games. Give me just a few good crpgs the odd year or so, then other people can play action rpgs, hack'n slash rpgs, martial arts rpgs, combat rpgs etc. all they want. B)

Should the Dark Side be more 'seductive'?
