  1. Perhaps we should leave the jews out of the equation, first off they were not the largest sufferers (that was either the russians or the chinese/koreans, depending on the what is the true number for the latter) and second, it would turn it into a real life political discussion. Lets just say that guys like Hitler, Hideki and Stalin, between them, got a lot of people killed to further their own personal ambitions. The destruction of Taris, which probably killed more people than all of WWII and later in Star Wars history, the destruction of Princess Leias homeplanet (whatsitsname?) by the Death Star, simply to intimidate and rule through fear. Although used as a mean to an end, fear is not a goal in itself for Fascism. It's about the state controlling people for the greater good of the state, whereas with the Sith it "seems" to be more about the individual and the means used to advance within the Sith hierarchy and then advancing the Sith cause secondary. Casual cruelty is more a trait, that they seem to share.
  2. "Managing senior programmers is like herding cats." - Dave Platt I can testify to the validity of the above statement
  3. Correct me if I'm wrong... Isn't the Sith about not doing what the force dictates, but to use the force as the Sith sees fit ? Since they are hardly a religious movement, they are more like an Oligarchy than a Theocracy.
  4. Social Darwinism ? Probably a very good description of the Sith.
  5. Ehhh... How did you arrive at that conclusion ?
  6. Found the following description of fascism as an ideology by by Matthew N. Lyons: Fascism is a form of extreme right-wing ideology that celebrates the nation or the race as an organic community transcending all other loyalties. It emphasizes a myth of national or racial rebirth after a period of decline or destruction. To this end, fascism calls for a "spiritual revolution" against signs of moral decay such as individualism and materialism, and seeks to purge "alien" forces and groups that threaten the organic community. Fascism tends to celebrate masculinity, youth, mystical unity, and the regenerative power of violence. Often, but not always, it promotes racial superiority doctrines, ethnic persecution, imperialist expansion, and genocide. At the same time, fascists may embrace a form of internationalism based on either racial or ideological solidarity across national boundaries. Usually fascism espouses open male supremacy, though sometimes it may also promote female solidarity and new opportunities for women of the privileged nation or race. Fascism's approach to politics is both populist--in that it seeks to activate "the people" as a whole against perceived oppressors or enemies--and elitist--in that it treats the people's will as embodied in a select group, or often one supreme leader, from whom authority proceeds downward. Fascism seeks to organize a cadre-led mass movement in a drive to seize state power. It seeks to forcibly subordinate all spheres of society to its ideological vision of organic community, usually through a totalitarian state. Both as a movement and a regime, fascism uses mass organizations as a system of integration and control, and uses organized violence to suppress opposition, although the scale of violence varies widely. Fascism is hostile to Marxism, liberalism, and conservatism, yet it borrows concepts and practices from all three. Fascism rejects the principles of class struggle and workers' internationalism as threats to national or racial unity, yet it often exploits real grievances against capitalists and landowners through ethnic scapegoating or radical-sounding conspiracy theories. Fascism rejects the liberal doctrines of individual autonomy and rights, political pluralism, and representative government, yet it advocates broad popular participation in politics and may use parliamentary channels in its drive to power. Its vision of a "new order" clashes with the conservative attachment to tradition-based institutions and hierarchies, yet fascism often romanticizes the past as inspiration for national rebirth. Fascism has a complex relationship with established elites and the non-fascist right. It is never a mere puppet of the ruling class, but an autonomous movement with its own social base. In practice, fascism defends capitalism against instability and the left, but also pursues an agenda that sometimes clashes with capitalist interests in significant ways. There has been much cooperation, competition, and interaction between fascism and other sections of the right, producing various hybrid movements and regimes. --- If that applies to the Sith, not really sure. Parts of it perhaps.
  7. Nicely put If thats supposed to be a plot twist, somebody needs a second job to pay the rent.
  8. All we need now is a Darth Solo, and the nic embarrasment level will reach critical mass...
  9. It would be a poor game that needed gimmicks like that, to motivate players to complete the game. The game (crpg's) should be able to offer rewards during play and offer a satisfying conclusion in the game. Want extras ? buy a special/collectors edition.
  10. Talk about faulty logic... If I drink whisky on the rocks, I get drunk. If I drink rum on the rocks, I get drunk. If I drink vodka on the rocks, I get drunk. Quo est demonstrandum, I should quit the ice cubes, for they make me get drunk. Some people were here before they knew that Obsidian were making a Star Wars game.
  11. Because less is known about the content, than about the presentation of it ? Maybe posters care less about the game, than about the gimmicks, the rules implementations, latest fashion on the core worlds etc. Perhaps it's just because it's easier for the developers to provide info about anything but the details of the game content, without giving too many spoilers (like that the bad guy with the white mask is male ) Could be other reasons. Speculation if sometimes more entertaining than facts. B)
  12. Is that a not so subtle hint to use the search function before starting new threads ? ... Sorry, coudn't resist, evil spammer Gorth, I'll go home and beat myself with a stick...
  13. Thanks Opus, I'll give them a try when I can get my hands on them.
  14. I never played any halflife I might have to catch up on that one someday. Same thing goes for that System Shock I've heard some positive things about. As for Kotor2, I suspect the are going to reuse the formula (the cinematic feel) of the first one. They need the little camera tricks, the showing of your own combat moves etc. for the engine doesn't give a lot of immersion otherwise. The graphics engine didn't impress anybody (at least I hope not). Consider it "misdirection of attention" or a sleight of hand trick if you want.
  15. [flamebait]Which selfrespecting mandalorian warrior would want to admit being beaten by a girl... [/flamebait] Later he turned all soft and squishy, lost all self respect and became a Revan (genderless) groupie B) I liked the guy, one of the more interesting npcs, and an awesome melee fighter to boot. Wouldn't mind seeing more of him in Kotor2
  16. :D (Sorry) Nice plans have a habit of falling apart when deadlines approach...
  17. It could have something to do with Obsidian not yet having a long history and backlog of games (under the name "Obsidian"). Also, what could be discussed about Kotor2, was discussed to pieces one and a half month before it was officially announced. A few newcomers after the announcement tried to recycle a few of the old subjects, but since most had been discussed before, it stirred little new interest. Now if they were to start a developers diary for Kotor2, so people could keep up with whats happening, watch this space for people trying to outdo each other, competing for the Obsidian guys attention. Oh, and some wallpaper sized concept art would help *hint!* *hint!* (and some post apocalyptic levels, blue jumpsuits and a female npc with a tail)
  18. Say hello to Drizzt in space...
  19. "There is enough SPAM to destroy the world ten times over..." How to get a message through Chapter 1 - History of SPAM Chapter 2 - The difference between SPAM and quality Chapter 3 - Drowning amongst spammers, what to do ? Appendix A Chapter 1 - History of SPAM Much to the chagrin of Hormel Foods, maker of the canned "Shoulder Pork and hAM"/"SPiced hAM" luncheon meat, the term "spam" has today come to mean network abuse, particularly junk E-mail and massive junk postings to USENET. Further history can be found here: http://www.templetons.com/brad/spamterm.html Chapter 2 - The difference between SPAM and quality SPAM on USENET, BBS, Discussion Forums,Message Boards etc. is most often associated with prolific postings of messages of no informational value, i.e. they serve no purpose. The motivations for spamming (v. of SPAM) are many and varied. Some is the result of lack of skill, some just reflect the personality of the poster and then some are just doing it for the competitiveness in achieving highest possible postcounts. Quality postings on the other hand are serious attempts at conveying messages with either informational or otherwise relevant information to the recipients of the message. Chapter 3 - Drowning amongst spammers, what to do ? While slightly dependant on the target audience, spending some effort on writing a message that is both eloquent and structured, has a greater chance of being received by people, who are more than just occasional spammers themselves. Illustrating Example Lets imagine a poster, lets just call him "Garth", who wants to suggest three things to the people, who are creating the next game, he looks forward to. Garth would like to suggest colour match between lightsaber blades and robes, high heeled boots for female jedi and finally a somewhat longer game experience. Garth tries one approach first: yo im Garth im just soooo cool I has watched star wars since before i were born and played all star wars game an therfore know all!!!! So u now spread ur ears and u listen and get ur fingers out, for if u ignore me then u just suxx so were was i yes we NEED those awesome lightsabrers that sort of just automaticaly change colors to match my robes and dont you lazy bastards make my robe without hoods for hoods are just wat we need for uber cool robes and then we also no can do without those friggin stiletto heels for my jedi chick for i like playing girls and then give us some fuqin space to play on for i finish last game in under 20 an that just suxx for i played them all and if u dont think that too then u can just p*ss off!!!!!!!!!!!!! PS: Oh and we need more polls to show that i am right --- While Garth gets something through, that something is definitely not his point. A completely wasted post, that at best aggravates a lot of people and starts a recursive flaming process. This is a SPAM post. Garth tries another approach Hello, I'm new here, I heard that the developers takes all the ideas from the boards here and puts into the new game. So therefore i would like to have the following added lightsaber colors that automatically adjusts to my robecolor, we cant kill those ugly siths looking like a patchwork of materials and colors. Also we need more footwear for the girl jedis for my girlfriend says you cant go out in a city wearing that. And the old game was way to short so if you want my money again you better add double triple that much or give me free download of content for my xbox! --- While definitely better than the first attemp, not technically SPAM anymore, the post is likely to be overlooked by the intended readers, simply because it's awful Garth tries one last time Hello, I'm new to these boards and would like to make a couple of suggestions: Lightsaber blades that adjust their colour to the robe the player is currently wearing High-heeled footwear for female jedis Longer game First point: Colour clashes between garb and tools doesn't look good and is tedious to adjust manually. Second point: Assuming that both sexes will wear male equipment is politically uncorrect and you might get sued. Third point: It's a competitive market out there and other companies are bringing out games that currently has more value to offer for my money, besides, such brilliant developers as you can surely make a better gamimg experience than the first game, right ? --- Still not perfect, but because the text is easier on the eye, odds are that some of the message might get read and appreciated for content (notice the nice suck-up in the last section ?). Point being, that by breaking up the monotony of the message and working on presentation, it's easier to access the information hidden in the post. It can also have the positive sideeffect, that individual sections of text are easier to quote and discuss (i.e. it will stand out amongst massive blocks of text). Appendix A About "social" spamming. Some posters have aquired a habit of chatting on message boards. This is often used to express rejection or accept of suggestions, general bantering, cracking jokes etc. While technically being SPAM, it can be argued, that by contributing to a community feeling, it does contribute something. Even if not relevant for the topics, community feeling can compel other posters to join in and become part of the community and thereby expand the scope and range of the arguments provided in general (i.e. useful).
  20. He wasn't even a troll... He was just pathetic...
  21. Them sneaky trolls...
  22. I vaguely remember THX-1138 as an interesting movie, can't comment on American Grafitti though... Lucas once told in an interview (sorry, no source) that the first Starwars and Indiana Jones movies were something like a realisation of his childhood fantasies. Perhaps the success of the first movies reflected that, good old fashioned comic book entertainment, made the way he liked it, and it showed. Later, he probably sold out and made movies and tv-series that he expected would sell. Just a thought. Might not be related to truth in any way...
