The All Things Political Topic - Politics is the entertainment division of the military industrial complex
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-66712589 Well, the Proud Boys leadership is all locked up now. Of course if Trump wins, I'm guessing they all get pardoned. I'm having a hard time drumming up sympathy for these guys that basically market and profit off hatred and lies. They sold a narrative on overthrowing the government in the name of patriotism, and then are surprised when they get sentence for treason.

In Space No One Can Hear You Scream a Funny Thread Title - The Starfield Thread
As I hinted at earlier, the best part of the new main story, compared to other Bethesda games, is the lack artificial urgency or emotional attachment put into it. No rescuing a family member or stopping gates of Oblivion. There are no giants yelling at you to come visit them on a mountaintop. It's a pretty chill exploration vibe. Build a big base, customize a cool ship, and scan some plants.

I'm not sure why people are surprised by this. There are quite a few main planets that are busy and full of life, but the idea that they were going to populate 1000 planets doesn't even fit into the setting. I've been to about 5 planets so far, and they've all been pretty interesting. But I'm also following the story and quests. If I wander aimlessly, then yeah, I'll probably find a bunch of boring caves.

I found a nice planet to start building a habitat. I just chose a random place to land. Then I stumbled upon a deserted Merc base that wasn't as deserted as advertised nearby. The randomization is pretty well done from what I can tell. I'd put it a notch above the genericness of No Man's Sky. I imagine it will get repetitive if all I do is randomly explore, but there is also a lot of main hubs that are handcrafted, so I doubt it will be an issue. Building bases is nice, definitely better than Fallout 4. I assume I can assign some of these groupies I have to stay there, instead of crowding my ship.

Eh, I'd say Starfield is more function over fashion. BG3 is amazing, that's for sure, but you also have to wrestle with the camera. Starfield is pretty muted in comparison. It does have some nice looking moments. I also had it set to high and was surprised at how dull everything was, but once I upped the setting to Ultra, everything got sharper. It didn't seem to affect performance, so that's nice. I'm comparing Starfield more to games like No Man's Sky, X4, and Elite: Dangerous. It's a decent upgrade on those. edit: Oh, I went to the moon and jacked some big ship out from under a group of spacers. I don't know that it is better than my starter ship, but it looks cooler.

I'll never understand the need to pit these games against each other. Like, do you only get to play one game in life? They are both great RPG's, yay.

Random video game news... the critical eyes have it
Regular old $10/month Gamepass let me preload Starfield a few days ago. So it's installed, but it says it unlocks in a little over 4 days.

I'm somewhat excited for Starfield. It's different enough from JA3 that I probably won't play it and just wish I was playing JA3. But I'm just going to wait for it to be available on Gamepass. Maybe I'll buy the imperial edition on sale when it comes out in a year or so.

For sure. This person is an idiot who wanted to play a game early and get attention. He apparently had about 5 copies to sell, which is worth a few thousand bucks? 12 years of hard time is not a reasonable sentence for being criminally dumb. He probably won't serve that anyway, but I'm not going to defend our justice system, which is punitive rather than restorative.

The disconnect between some gamers and real world consequences is so bizarre.

What are you Playing Now? - What doesn't kill you, gives you XP
Vampire Survivors is the greatest game since JA3. My son and I are pretty hooked on it right now. Right now the old man holds a slight edge on longest run, with me at 30:05 and him at 29:58.

That sounds like 90% of the stuff on Youtube to me, honestly.

I have no idea why they didn't just make it so food automatically goes to camp, though.

Yeah, that's still a bit too retro for my tastes.

Randommer/Interestinglier/Weirder - now more of everything for the same low price!
That's huge, particularly after Russia failed a few days ago. Very exciting!

Picture of Your Games the 15th
Hot take - same developer and artists use same engine to make game that looks similar to previous games.

Your problem is you just played Jagged Alliance 3. I knew this was going to happen. We are ruined for games because nothing can match JA3.

Cinema and Movie Thread: flickering images
I watched Barbie about a week ago. It was great. Had some fantastic Mattel toy humor and was a bit more emotionally stirring than I expected. But honestly, it's not really a movie for me. It's a movie that speaks to the 3 generations of women I have living in my household. I don't get why there are men who don't get that. There are some dumb dudes out there.
