Post 3.0: Paladins.....
Rosbjerg replied to Brimsurfer's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
^ that's a fair counter argument, they are indeed a bastard hybrid - and it's fairly close to Brim's argument that they are basically a poor priest and a poor fighter - and why choose that when you can just have a fighter and priest than will perfom better together than a pally alone, which you're probably gonna be doing either way. To that I don't really have a counter argument other than they are pretty good at being said hybrid - they can replace either class if you play them right, they offer a decent buff and a decent tank or dps ability. But yeah they don't really shine or stand out on their own beyond Sacred Immolation and Sworn Enemy, I wish they did too. In many ways they remind me of Druids, who are kinda a mix between rangers, priests/wizards and rouges. -
You scrolled past it.

They don't discuss specific agreements, so unfortunately none of us can prove anything - whether is expensive or cheap. I base my statements on market observations, which I'll happily admit is very subjective. And this is pretty much as close as we get to real information https://www.steampowered.com/steamworks/FAQ.php They don't dicsuss revenue splits, but are a little more forthcoming with marketing - they do not make deductions based on increased bandwith or general marketing, but there is a monthly payment for services.

Mostly I play on Hard, but I played on POTD fine enough - just didn't like that took so long to mob up every fight. I get owned by dragons though, but that's mostly because I don't know how to deal with them effectively. The toon is Bleak Walker and Nature Godlike - which is not a terrible effective combo to be honest or rather it could be more effective.. But I wanted a Cruel playthrough and try a Godlike. So far the only classes I've found to be woefully underwhelming is Rogue, Barbarian and Cipher - and that's entirely because I can't play them right, so I think it's great that Obz has managed to make a game where I can actually build pretty much any party combination I want that fits my playstyle and have it be viable enough. In most similar games I've found I'm often forced to learn how to play that one most effective class, because if you don't then the game is unbeatable on the higher difficulties. -
Based on what? Steams/GOGs attitude towards smaller indie games? Because yeah they get great distribution deals, as both platform are hoping to consolidate the market under their portfolio. It's extremely costly to release a larger game, on any medium or platform. You're paying GOG or Steam a hefty amount, since they have to host, support and handle the bandwidth of your product for as long as you're keeping it on their servers - something you are gonna generously compensate them for.. And not just by letting them take a small percentage of the profits off sales. There's obviously marketing fees associated with this as well - as you have to pay them to promote your game through their channels.. and if you're not doing physical advertising or aggressively pushing for online column space etc. this is gonna be a good portion of your marketing expenses. Obviously... I get that you wanna see a release through GOG, but remember that it's far from free or cheap for any developer to distribute their game through any platform. Otherwise you would obviously see everyone publishing through any available medium and the big publishing agencies would be redundant.

I have a main and Pallegina as the two forward semi tank and damage dealers - on their own they are great, but supported by a druid it's so effective that I don't even need anything else in the party. Meaning I can bring less effective party members along for the story etc, because whatever happens I can always rely on that trio to kill or outlast anything. My main is using the soulbound 2hander that requires 5 revivials to level, I've had to actively take him down myself in order to achieve it simply because he can take out everything on his own without much supervising. So I think they are incredibly effective. But it's not a mini/max kinda class, they are however great for someone like me how like smaller more consistent bonuses rather than having to micro manage 2-3 casters etc. -
Release date set to May 9th 2016. and a new release trailer
-
So a mishmash of their experiences with populations and production from Victoria, city/province management from Crusader Kings and differentiating government traits from Europa Universalis.... Interesting. Probably extremely unbalanced in multiplayer however, until at least the first expansions major patch, judging by past releases And after that virtually unplayable due to bloat of features and small expansions. Heh, I'm already looking forward to wasting hundreds of hours on it.

Challenging
Rosbjerg replied to Panda Baby's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
It's the eternal curse of mini/maxing - sure its more fun to build, but it's impossible for the developers to build a challenging game when you can account for every eventuality with foresight. -
Any good?

Calculating, why rely on brute force when implied threats are equally effective.

Lets stick to the topic at hand rather than how we feel about each other, no? -

Evil Companions

In truth we don't know how -and in what way, beyond 'different', a person's reasoning is affected when the soul is damaged. I think there's ceartinly precedence, in regards to Durance's actions and words, to call him crazy and/or evil. He can easily enough be seen as a bigoted zealot, a crazy hermit or even a tool for higher powers.. I personally prefer to view his actions as disjointed, as a a result of damage - a sort of critique of what happens to the mind when we surrender to conflicting morals and 'doublethink'. -
Soulbound Weapons
Rosbjerg replied to Brimsurfer's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
In your life.... But what about your soul's life? Or the hammer's experience. This is basically magic and soul magic at that. While a silly argument, I'm not seeing it as so completly out of character for the setting. -
I've found Paladin to be the easiest so far and there's a good RP element as well. You can play a Paladin as a pure tank and once you get a hold of the mechanics (around lvl 4 or so for me) they become even better. But Druid is probably the most fun class I've played. You're a decent caster through the whole game and the shifting ability is quite effective in the first 5 levels, where you need the boost. I'm not enjoying rouge, cipher or barbarian at all.. They require too much attention to the mechanics.. Gonna love 'em on my potd run in a few years no doubt
-
I couldn't get past Caed Nua for 2 runs now.. then I switched to a Bleak Walker Paladin (was playing Cipher) and now I'm loving it. You might simply be playing in a style that's not working for you?
-
They need to have been allied with you for at least 10 years I believe. Here's some of the rules.

Keeping enemies engaged?
Rosbjerg replied to Brimsurfer's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Isn't it just mirroring player tactics? Take out the damage dealers at all cost and then handle the slow movers who are now without support. I always take out the wizard or ranger first, precisely because otherwise I'm putting my head on the anvil for the hammer. edit: I try to counter by doing what would work against me - traps, cc etc. -
Why do people watch/love "Let's play..." videos?
Rosbjerg replied to Heijoushin's topic in Computer and Console
There's some research being done on this at my faculty actually - and they are leaning towards it creating a feeling of community in much the same way a forum does. Lets Plays are often singleplayer games and often hosted by popular/beautiful people, so in short; watching it makes you feel like you're part of a popular activity. Which most of us need to feel - in a way multiplayer games do very directly, so its simply a way to create a feeling of togetherness around an, in essence, lonely experience. Thats grossly simplifying it of course. -
Yep, welcome to the club when I joined the forum 11 years ago I had long curly hair. Now.. Well my sig will speak for itself
