^Easily resolved - can anyone point to a mod (lets stick to rpgs, and not games that are exclusive to steam anyway) that is available on steam workshop but not available elsewhere? Edit: Well, it's not obsidian that are offering the mods really - it's the modders - they can put it where they like, of course. However your suggestion (I know not serious) to use only steam workshop because it's the better service is illogical - it's only a better service if you can access it, which only those who got the steam keys can do. A service that's usable is better than one that isn't

Chants for the Chanter - Lack of Sound Effects
Silent Winter replied to Havelok's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
In 3rd edition you could get 'Silent Spell' feat and 'Still Spell' feat - enabling you to cast without verbal / somatic components respectively. Silent Spell was awesome for a sorceror - didn't need to prep in advance - "Oh, I've been silenced...have a lvl3 fireball instead " -
How did you know when to break off stealth and start detecting traps? You can't unless you start detecting the traps...which you can't do while in stealth mode. Well, there's the tedious way: Stealth forward a tiny bit, click 'detect traps' (you can detect traps in the time when you're coming out of stealth mode and before you're seen by the enemy). Then run away round the corner (if enemies are present), re-stealth, rinse and repeat. Or it's just easier to have your mage cast invisibility - lasts 24 hours and detecting and disarming traps doesn't break it. So yeah, combining stealth and trap-detection makes sense to me in PoE.

^Agree with this - as for needing to pickpocket everyone to make sure you don't miss out - there could simply be a logic to it: peasants have nothing but a dirty handkerchief or something, rich-looking merchants might have a few gold (but wouldn't carry enough on themselves to be economy breaking - they'd have hired guards for that - nor be really worth it - just for the role-play fun of a thief character), a wizard might have a scroll but also a magical detection against theft. You'd be able to pick up rumours that suggest Old Farty McDrubbins carries a lucky rabbit's foot or anything that might be 'worth' stealing. I agree that 'sleight of hand' would be a better skill since it'd have more uses. Also, pickpocketing a full-plate armour would be right out - it should be limited to small-ish items - anything else requires a heist / mugging.

GoG or Steam ?
Silent Winter replied to ruzen's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Sure - but that's the developers'/store's POV, from my POV, I'm buying a game to play - the installer is the 1s and 0s of that product. The EULA is something most people don't read and is largely unenforceable in many jurisdictions. If gog decided to terminate my account for whatever silly reason (like they go out of business), I've stil got the product I bought. My question was about how easy it is to archive the installed games from steam - if there's nothing to stop you zipping up the installed game folders and backing those up for use on a future machine, then it's 'DRM-lite' if anything and not such a big deal. -
GoG or Steam ?
Silent Winter replied to ruzen's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Can you install it without opening steam? Steam handles that the same as GoG: Downloading the installer is required for the first installation. The Steam client is a one-time installer for all games, which requires being logged-in to download. GoG's installers are needed to be downloaded for each game, and doing so requires being logged-in to GoG's site to access the installer download from a user's account. In both cases, after the installation is done, the GoG installer or the Steam installer / client can be deleted / uninstalled, and the game folder can be access by any means a person chooses, and can be archived, moved, extracted, and the game played by whatever means a person opts for. Steam and GoG are equal in their DRM measures for DRM-free games. It's only a question of whether a person would like the possibility of a one-time installer to access all games versus a separate installer for every game that they choose to download. Let me put it this way - can it be reinstalled without opening steam? For me there's a difference between logging in to your account to download something you've purchased, and requiring you to log in to use the thing (installer) that you purchased. For games that can be easily archived as full-installs (like BG, which has no external files), then backing up the game that way is fine. If that can be done with steam games, then groovy. (though I'll stick with gog rather than start a new account) -

The only mod support they mentioned (a while back) was using Nexus-mods to host the mods. They haven't mentioned steam workshop support (and it'd kinda suck for non-steam customers to require steam to get at mods / get them to work) Can anyone inform of the advantages to using that as opposed to any other form of mod distribution?

Countdown to Eternity!
Silent Winter replied to Mikey Dowling's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Considering there is no identification process ( ), nope. Wouldn't make much sense to have cursed items if you know all item's statistics from the spot. Which saddens me too... would've been interesting to have it, but I'm not gutted that it's not in. What would be cool is 'clever' cursed loot (something that looks bad but can be used in an advantageous way) - e.g. girdle of gender-changing - use it to allow a male PC to flirt with the male guard to gain entry Or gear that has ups and downs - e.g. curses your intellect but blesses your might / or something. -

^ from the PC world interview with Josh: So it sounds more like either HOW or TOTSC. (I'd prefer TOTSC - if it's going to be separate world-map, then why not after the endgame? (unless that runs onto the sequel "and your characters were buried in a cave-in") -
Do not feel bad. Most people that speak English as their first language do not understand many words in english. That, and you have crazy idiots like that Lephys guy, always jumping in with confusing homonym-based jokes, like "I don't understand mini words in English, either. They're far too small." Gyah... who does that guy think he is?! ^apparently he thinks he's some kind of puns myth ... which is an existential dilemma if ever I saw one ... (which of course, I haven't).

^So I repeat: Why program in a respec option (with the additional UI elements + bug-testing therein), when the console commands could be used to the same effect (which also cover other, non-PC-build, problems like a script not firing or a variable not incrementing). (I'm assuming at the moment that the console commands cover as much as the IE/NWN games - devs? Is there a Give negative XP option? A delevel option?)

My old school solid UI mock-up for Pillars of Eternity

Stealth Lions invading the town But yeah, I like this style (are those vegetables in the quick-item slot? ) -
^As much as I like gog too, I don't believe you'll need a constant connection to Steam's server to play the game. You'll need the steam-client active to download/install it (and if you want auto-patching on). But there isn't an always-online DRM for PoE, even through Steam. No doubt a dev can give a concrete confirmation on that. (Still: go gog!)

This is an argument for leaving the console commands open - being able to deal with (some) bugs on the fly. (Even BG2, with fix-packs years later, benefits from that). No need to put it in the game as an option (which would take more programming and bug-testing). There can be a simple command: 'Give XP -10,000' (maybe 'Delevel' if necessary) then 'Give XP +10,000' Personally wouldn't use a respec option so above opinion should be taken as coming from that camp.

It would be better even if it were just a simple dialogue: "Hi," "Hi, so tell me about yourself" "Well, I've got this wall of text here: lorem ipsum..." (Obviously more involved would be even better still, but given time constraints I'd settle for that) (Not got such an NPC myself but just thinking of interacting in game would make them more a part of the world rather than a mobile info-board). (mah immershun, etc).

^On gog/steam/whatever you'll get the basic addition (i.e. 'Hero') Any extras on your tier (e.g. soundtrack) will be via the backer-portal (and I'm assuming the expansion will also be a gog code/steam key when available). ^ That was the latest plan, but they said they'd look into certain tiers getting the gog/steam equivalent to keep it all in one place so stay tuned.

Update #76: Music in Pillars of Eternity
Silent Winter replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
^I like it. I like the way it builds up to the more 'epic' part from a gentle start. Sounds lots better with the orchestra involved now than it did before - I can hum along now so I must be 'feeling it' more- 221 replies

Character Race
Silent Winter replied to Heijoushin's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Probably going human first playthrough in PoE (just for a 'base' play as it were). Then orlan. In D&D I'll usually go half-elf in my first playthrough and then others if it's worth a replay. Unless it's like IWD / EOB where you roll a whole team, then I'll have a mix of human/elf/dwarf/halfling/whatever. In BG - 1st was half-elf fighter-mage, 2nd human assassin, 3rd human druid,4th elf archer, ... In NWN2, my first was half-elf ranger-rogue. 2nd was halfling sorceress. Then my PC died. ... I mean the desktop, not the main character (luckily, just managed to get a new one after 6 months of being without). Rarely roll a dwarf for my main but always like to have one in the team. Gnomes, I can take or leave (Jan Jansen was fun). Halflings get a play sometimes, depending on the game.
