x32 or x64? How hard was it to get it running? The KOTOR II forum below is like a years-long problem fest so I assumed the original KOTOR would be even more of a pain to get up and running.

Pfft, 100 billion is nothing. Thats what, one years operating cost for our necessary () UHC?

I was thiiiis close to buying KOTOR since a lot of people seem to love it but then I noticed this: and realized my Win7 x64 would never run it and I just cant handle having to fiddle with the software to get it to run. Honestly, if it doesnt work right out of the box for me then it becomes a coaster/object of my eternal rage.

But is it a waste? We were that capable precisely because of the R&D we did 40 years ago. You dont just pull the next generation platform out of thin are, it takes years of work. I hope we wont need the F-22 in 20 years. We dont have to arm for another war in Europe. The next big showdown will be with China. Great point.

Agreed. I dont know about that. The M-1 was developed in the 1970's (yep, its really that old) to fight the Soviet T-72/T-80. In the beginning of each Gulf War it was instrumental in crushing Iraqi ground forces and its absense would have dramatically increased the duration of that phase. Sure, NOW they seem a bit overkill when everything switches to house-to-house fighting but for destroying Iraq's standing army? It cant be beat. Literally. Luckily for us, we are willing to spend a huge percentage of GDP on our military so for the time being we dont have to trade one thing to accomplish another. I also think you may be underestimating the effect that being able to transport a carrier force that outguns most nations has on bad guys. AFAIK, there are currently no new fighters or tanks on the drawing boards, but I get your point.

1) The F-22 program was cancelled. 2) The US maintains a commanding lead in kickassery precisely because we continue to develop advanced weapons systems, whether we need them "right now" or not. 3) The "military industial complex" brings billions of dollars and thousands of jobs to civilians.

What are you playing now
Still playing Torchlight and now that Ive gotten further I take back the stuff I said earlier, there is enough diversity in dungeon layout and critters. Thank god for the dog/pack mule. With the Monty Haul this game puts out Im sending him back to town at least once per level.

What you did today
My condolences Meshugger. Sounds like he had a good run though.

What you did today
Why does your birthday depress you v_o? The whole "one day closer to the grave" thing?

What are you playing now
Ive gotten a little further into Torchlight now (lvl 12) and its a mixed bag. Its a mindless clickity-click fest (which I dont have a problem with) and its fun to play for a few hours here and there. Unfortunately, unless there is a lot more to come, it seems a little redundant. I fight the same skeletal archers, zombies, spiders and oozes and all they do is scale to my level. I was hoping to see a lot more beastiary and the occasional "named" one every two levels doesnt count. The dungeons seem pretty much the same too as Im already seeeing a lot of recycled layouts. They claim to have randomized dungeons and monsters but Im not seeing it yet. Maybe it gets more diverse in the later levels?

What are you playing now
Torchlight looks pretty cool, I think Ill download the demo tonight. At FOUR TIMES the cost of Space Siege it better be good!

Bummer. Thanks for the input though.

So Space Siege is on sale at Steam for $5.10. It has a pretty crappy Metacritic score (60) but it so cheap it almost doesnt matter. Thoughts?

Oppenheimer: "I'm on a BOAT, mother ******"
Good for them. We should be doing the exact same thing. As an aside, I was watching a show on Discovery channel a while back that predicted we should achieve fusion reactors within the next 10 years.

Movies you have seen recently

Working at night
I spent almost 8 years working nights in the Navy, either 7pm to 7am (while at sea) or 11pm to 7am (while shore based) and I loved it. It takes a bit of getting used to because when you get off its not like you go immediately to sleep, you do your normal after work things, so you wind up with a really wonky sleep schedule where in your case youre going to be sleeping from like 10am to 7pm. In my case there were several positives to that schedule: 1) the bosses usually arent around to muck things up 2) it free's up your day hours to take care of any errands 3) its not as hot (this sounds crazy but try working on a flight line in the middle of a summer day ). I know #3 has no bearing on you but 1 and 2 apply. One word of warning though, if you are in a relationship where your other half works days, it really strains the relationship as you basically spend zero time together.
