Kaftan's development thread of doom
Kaftan Barlast replied to Kaftan Barlast's topic in Developers' Corner
Wednesday 27th of February He's not bald, it's just the way light falls on his head (really) 11:54 - Awaiting lunch 14:16 - After yet again struggling with DDS, we decided to go with ordinary *.tga files instead. It will take longer to load, but thats acceptable at this time. We also ran a test with a staggering 25,000,000 triangles (and diffuse, normal and specular maps) scene in our engine with a crappy graphics card and it can take it, which is pretty sweet. Obviously we're going to have to cut it down, but it means we can have a lot of objects on screen. 15:06 - Coffee and wrestling time! We lost but the cake is nice. -
Most exciting thing to happen this year
Kaftan Barlast replied to Walsingham's topic in Way Off-Topic
Its my opinion that a person who is so religiously devoted that he lacks the ability to make an informed decision based on reason, should not be allowed to vote, hold office or otherwise posses the ability to change the lives of others. Religion shouldnt be an excuse not to think for oneself -

In the ideal state, a citizen is free to believe whatver he wants. But he knows that when its time to vote, he should rely on reason, not faith. -
Kaftan's development thread of doom

Well, Ive worked with DDS before and its fine as long as you dont try to use the alpha channel, then it starts acting up. Sometimes it does what you want, but you dont know what you did right, most of the time it doesnt work and you still dont know why. With one particular tree model, every leaf but two had functioning transparent alpha, and no one could say why even though every leaf used the exact same DDS texture. The other day I made a DDS with working alpha transparncy that didnt even have an alpha channel. A separate colour specular map looks and works much better, but you cant get it all -

Still, Sand is completly right. Separation of church and state is a staple of democracy, and in most cases a necessity. Religion is inherently undemoctratic* and discriminating**. * no religion allows you to disagree with what is declard "the will of god" ** when a religion is established as the norm of a society, unbelievers will find themselves shut out at best and persecuted at worst. -

Pakistan blamed for YouTube Outage

As always, we Swedes are the best and wisest in the world. What we do is to physicly remove illegal websites hosted on servers in Sweden, and leave anything on foreign servers alone to be handled by whoever is responsible for them. And it is only marginally less fascist of Pakistan to block youtube, than it is for China to block out anything related to Tianamen square. You dont burn books and you dont censor the internet, no matter what. Not to mention its friggin ridicilous to block a website because you're offended by a damn joke. These people should grow up and stop being idiots. -
Tuesday February 6th. "Artists loves the doodoo!" As you may or may not know we now have an engine, an office, furniture, desktops toys and rubber poop. But today the programmers succeeded in getting normalmaps to work properly with specular, making our graphics look even more amazing than before. The problem is that we have to put the specular in the alpha channel of the normalmap, and with DDS textures, thats annoyingly tricky. In the art department, everything is fine and dandy. Except the coffee doesnt go well with UV-unwrapping today... and that someone stole our radiator, so my fingers are freezing off. I havent got the SDK for the engine yet, so I cant show ye any nifty screenshots, but the Alpha should be ready by the end of march and then there will be things to show! And yes, I can show them because its only the bussiness-things that I have to keep my mouth shut about. The game itself is a comical third-person action-adventure set in the fabulous world of litterature.

When you block a website, you slam the door shut in the face of democracy and all that is good and true in the world. If some dingbag finds anything on the internet offensive, he can just not go there anymore, or even block the site through his router/modem. -

This aggression will not stand, man. We cant let them darn paki's fiddle with our intrawebb, because through the intrawebb flows the juice of freedom. -
According to Wikipedia, "Nehalem" quad- and octacore will be released late this year. It doesnt say which socket or chipset it will use, but its likely that you'll need a completely new mobo to support it.

I thought Intel was releasing their Octacore systems later this year? Or am I too far ahead?

The models are great if your idea of the average person is a 300 pound giant dwarf. Well, they're supposed to look like that, so you're essentially saying you dont like steak because it has too much meat on it. ..and dont be making jokes about little people! Achondroplasia is a serious handicap

I spend several hours today oogling over the GoW assets in Unreal3Ed and I have to say that the artists at Epic are probably the best in the gaming bussiness. You'll only find more talented guys at places like ILM or Pixar.
-
That was quite impressive. I can figure out the basic principles of how they do most of it, and its awesome that they got it working. The crowd simulation could add tons of gameplay if they can get enough enemies to be "active" and not just dummies. The people at Epic never ceases to amaze me. Im jealous of all the guys from my Uni that got to attend GDC this week. I might be going to the Leipzig GDC, and hopefulyl they will have even more stuff to show there.

I want a nice image of the swedish king Carl XVI Gustav, with the coat of arms on it!!

Most of the decline in the western economy is due to outsourcing. Like, swedish telecom company Telia, who made record profits of more than a billion euro and what do they do? Give their employees a christmas bonus? Nope, they sack all their swedish employees and spends the money on moving production to China instead. It's no wonder we have mass unemployment and poverty if w have to compete with people who can do the sam that we do for just a dollar a day.

I order online from whoever is cheapest and has the fastest delivery times. And I also use Steam for smaller or older games. I only really buy PC games, the only 360 game Ive bought was ME.

Im playing Assassin's Creed now. It's been ok so far, except that I dont really like the idea of an arab whackjob cult led by someone curiously similar to Ayatollah Khomeini, being the good guys. I hope there's some plot twist in here somewhere so I can betray and kill them all Also, Altair is a complete jerk.

That's the thing. I know this sounds like something from Henry Kissinger or **** Cheney, but if that's what it takes.. then isnt that what you need?

I hate Japanese game design. Ive been trying to play Dead Rising for a week now and its brought me nothing but endless frustration. Not only are the controls for shooting completely mangled, but the save zones are so few and so far between that I spend more time running from my latest savepoint to the location where my imminent and annoying death awaits. I think Ill return it and borrow Assassins Creed instead.

Free or nonexpensive 3D game engines?
Kaftan Barlast replied to Kaftan Barlast's topic in Developers' Corner
We've started to work with Truevision3D now, we moved into our new sweet office today even. It's smelly and on campus, but its a miracle* we managed to persuade the university to give it to us. * our producer may or may not possess compromosing video footage of drunken faculty members -
Maybe Yugoslavis will turn out to be another example of Thesis/Antithesis. The country will continue to divide into ever smaller pieces until finally, someone will see the benefits of unity and begin the process of unification again. And then there will be another civil war and the country will split again..
