Update #77: Art in Alpha
rjshae replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
A reasonable counterargument to the idea that so-called "boob plate" may kill the wearer: Contrary to popular belief, "Boob Plate" armor won't kill you. So, this idea may at least be considered suspect.- 338 replies

Update #77: Art in Alpha

This seems to be the main argument from the boob armour crowd that I've seen. Regular use of ad hominem attacks simply makes the remainder of your argument completely irrelevant. am not sure people know what ad hominem means and why it is a fallacy. --Nietzsche? how can you take anything he said seriously? the rat bastard had syphilis. --the main proponent of the new dam project is cheating on his wife. perhaps he should fix his marriage before he tries and fix our community. as far as logic is concerned, is nothing wrong with being insulting. the aforementioned Nietzsche were less than gentle with his less gifted detractors and his barbs in no way diminished the validity o' his arguments. ad hom is problematic when the character insult replaces the argument, or when a person claims that an argument fails because o' the arguers's character flaw. destroy an argument And call opponent a "mouth-breathing troglodyte with delusions of consciousness" is not making argument fail 'cause o' use o' ad hominem. ... in fact, 'cause it is ironic and all, claiming that argument fails just 'cause person X is insulting is an ad hominem fallacy. isn't that funny? well, Gromnir sees the humor. HA! Good Fun! Okay then, the posting is tying all messages in favor of distinctive female features in the armor to the more extreme viewpoint that is generally meant to be insulting, or is the result of poor application of logic. It's an irrelevant claim concerning the authors that is used to reject other arguments, and therefore can be perceived as ad hominem. It immediately biases my perception of credibility of the author, rendering the remainder of the post as so much irrelevant dishwater.- 338 replies

Wouldn't the enemies regenerate their stamina, due to their non-combat state, as well? And wouldn't your Health still be decreased, unless you used up your limited camping supplies to rest just to return to the same fight? It's not that I don't think it should be hard to escape from a fight. But... it just seems unnecessary to make sure it's arbitrarily difficult to do so, just so that no one could ever possibly maybe heal up and come back. Of course, also, if you go off and camp, maybe the foes go to their own camp and bring back replacement troops. It would really depend on what the foe was (wolves probably wouldn't do that, but then... maybe there are just randomly roving wolves in the forest, and you always deal with that, instead of just specifically placed wolf pack fights, *shrug*). If the game is built with that in mind, then yes. Allowing an escape from combat would add to the level of verisimilitude, but would require additional coding and event handling. What they might be able to implement relatively easy is: (1) the surviving enemies recover their stamina and any per combat abilities, and (2) the encounter difficulty is bumped up by one step. The latter is to simulate the effect of drawing upon available reinforcements.

Female gamers having a hard time in gaming communites
rjshae replied to IndiraLightfoot's topic in Computer and Console
Many of the extended discussions here are not of high value and result in contentious behavior. It may have less to do with sexism per se and more about just general priggish human nature. -

A game like that wouldn't rack up high sales marks. It might result in a dedicated community, but that would be a niche market within a niche market. -

Female gamers having a hard time in gaming communites
rjshae replied to IndiraLightfoot's topic in Computer and Console
Similar types of issues have been reported in the youthful male-dominated software development industry, so I don't think it's a gaming-specific problem per say. I work in an office where I don't think such problems exist--or at least they haven't been reported, but that's likely because we're mostly an older group of well-educated people with families. Plus we all get along with each other very well. -

Perhaps some combination of trolling, a perception of political agendas at work, elements of prior discord, trolling, argumentative natures, the constrained nature of written communication, a desire to discuss other elements of the game, trolling, particular artistic style preferences, stubbornness, and strong passions for particular viewpoints. People like to control each other socially, so some amount of conflict is probably inevitable. *shrug* But this is getting well off topic.- 338 replies

I can't say I've wanted to replay a game again because of random loot drops. But it can provide a certain sense of sponteneity. What might be interesting is an armor/shield/weapon slot upgrade system that can come with random upgrades. The weapon drops for different encounters can be mostly fixed, but they have a chance of having a randomly generated minor upgrade in one of the slots.

I don't think we are missing the point. By saying that you are significantly underestimating the audience, or else you're being condescending. It's just not that important to everybody to rehash the same old social issues without significant new context, and I'm merely supplementing that with some mechanical details as to why the point is trivial to me in this instance.- 338 replies

Content or Quality?
rjshae replied to Namutree's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
A problem with this question is that it is harder to quantify quality than quantity. In the context of an artform, what does it even mean to say that quality should always trump quantity when you can't actually measure the level of quality? About all you can do then is to try and be consistent on the level of quality you choose, then expand the quantity as much as possible within that constraint. -
"But it was made for us."
rjshae replied to Bryy's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Go play Divinity: Original Sin. It has it. Going around the various forums it seems universally hated, so it may not make the final cut... so get in while you can! I think it makes more sense for a game with one one or two controlled characters. It may not scale well, becoming tedious with six party members. That being said, I liked the idea of a very simple weapon wear implementation. But a tiny but loud minority managed to shout it down. *Keeps on ignoring the boobarmor convo* 4 actually. And as said, pretty much everyone seems to hate it. No-one, at all, is a pro after playing it. That, or they keep their mouths very very shut while there's critisism all around them... An obvious reducio ad absurdum argument relying on multiple logical fallacies. Or are you 'joking' again?- 340 replies

Update #77: Art in Alpha
rjshae replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Taken by itself, that is a complete non issue. It is the result of that influence that matters. In the context of a FPS where a high level of detail is apparent and spans a relatively wide viewing angle, yes that influence could potentially have a social impact. That is context where I think this discussion properly belongs. For a small image, the details are barely perceptible and are subject to pixel quantization. There just isn't enough information present to dominate your perception or heavily sway your interests and perceptions. You are more likely to be influenced by the overall screen view, including the artwork. This is why the size of the image matters. So yes, I believe that "twelve pixels on a screen" renders this bunny trail discussion as all but pointless, and I am experiencing absolutely no shame over stating that fact.- 338 replies

Well, if the grumblings of the indoctrinated PC crowd means we'll end up with sterile, prudish, gender-neutral armor fit only for a herd of pasty eunuchs wielding fans and oven mitts, that'll soon be fixed by the modders. Hence, I think the point is probably moot. Joking, of course...- 338 replies

Sales Projections
rjshae replied to PillarsofEternity's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Initial sales will be lower than they normally would for a successful game because of the advanced purchase through Kickstarter. But the 74K+ backers will surely count toward total sales. -
really? I recall that you could use fear or confusion which made creatures to lose control and wander around, but I don't recall a morale system in bg\bg2 and neither in PoE for that matter :/ Edit: maybe you mean "morality" i.e. the alignment system? When some enemy forces started to crumble and became outnumbered, some would break, turn their selection ring yellow, and try to flee. I thought it was a nice touch.

Content or Quality?

I'd say: respectable quality (20%), solid mechanics (15%), good story/interaction (30%), nice level of variety (15%), and longer than average length (20%). -

Update #77: Art in Alpha
rjshae replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Variety is definitely a good thing to bring to the table in a CRPG. The more variety in appearance, while staying true to the general form, the better. To me, being able to distinguish male from female forms is good, as are differences in races, class roles, weapons, banners, shield types, and so forth. Again, this is all just a tempest in a tea pot. A very tiny tea pot, covering maybe a dozen pixels or less.- 338 replies
