Update #89: Backer Rewards
rjshae replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I think there is no friendly fire. I am 100% sure it doesn't depend on the difficulty setting. Aw, man...- 95 replies

Can't you toxic guys just stay on the RPG Codex and limit this kind of needlessly offensive posts to that forum? Or is it now a standard behaviour of self-proclaimed old-school CRPG hardcore fans to behave like total douches on every possible occasion? Jesus... Well, the good thing about posters with toxic opinions is that they won't then actually play the game and spew forth yet more toxicity. Or at least they won't play it more than a four or five times, at any rate.

Update #89: Backer Rewards
rjshae replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Per the PAX South video, did I see correctly that there is no "friendly fire" from that flame wall spell? Or is that based upon a difficulty setting? I haven't played the beta so I don't know what's possible.- 95 replies

Maybe like in PnP. WTF you make a D&D game and change its basics. And if cooldows are so fun, PoE is full of tho.. ups it is not! Cooldowns kill strategy and only leave tactics for combat. I can understand with these guys being DAO and ME devs decided to use cooldowns but I still don't like it in my D&D game. I at least hope character building options are going to be complex but I am afraid they are not. Wait, what? Strategy? You're using that word in an odd sense. Once you're in a battle it's tactics that apply; even to the big picture within that combat. Perhaps you are thinking in terms of how your manage your expendable resources between combats? Yes, managing limited resources is part of strategy. Cooldowns remove all limited resources but time and focus completely on tactics. I understand your exaggerated perspective, but pretty much all cRPGs have some form of limited resources and event planning involved. Even those with cool downs and linear plots. If they didn't then player choice is eliminated and it wouldn't be an RPG. To me cooldowns are just a balancing mechanism, nothing more. Selecting a cooldown ability is functionally equivalent to choosing which magic armor to wear. If you want resource management, then carry potions, scrolls, wands, rods, and invest time in crafting.

About the first expansion
rjshae replied to Sanquiz's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Tales of the Sword Coast, while okay for what it was, just felt like a series of short stories that were only tied together by their geographical proximity. It'd be interesting if the expansion actually built upon the ending of the main campaign, either by adding some new ending variants or carrying the story forward. -

Gaming history - do you think it's important?
rjshae replied to Starwars's topic in Computer and Console
Playing a few older games can make one appreciate certain improvements in game play mechanics a little more. But in general I now find a lot of older games to be tedious, despite having enjoyed many of them in bygone days. -
Right, but five uses per day is five charges followed by a day long cooldown, is it not? At least from a distance there's not that much difference. Breath weapons useable every N rounds? Is that not also a cooldown? Cooldowns have been around from well before computer games. So why the dislike? It's just a balance mechanic. The alternative, I suppose, are either unreliable powers, powers with a backlash, powers that rely on a limited resource, or powers too weak to be unbalancing when used every round.

Backer Reward Shipment Poll
rjshae replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Looks like the empty box delivery is a winner by a country mile. I wonder how big the manual is going to be? -
Backer Reward Shipment Poll

#2 seems like it would be the cheaper shipping option so I voted for that. Otherwise I'm not particular. Thanks. -

A few people get tinnitus pretty bad though, and it can impact the quality of their life. Personally I get vertigo from time to time, which can significantly limit my activity. You don't really get used to it; just learn to tolerate it. -

Hairbrained also benefits from having an established reputation by completing their first KS and publishing a follow-on. They have an established market, whereas OtherSide is new to the KS game. -

Merchant Gold

These types issues are why I'd like to see a different game mechanic for purchasing the more powerful loot. For example, a private magic item auction held in a well-to-do quarter with some interesting bidders. First you have to earn your way in, and then you're not always guaranteed to get an item you really want. Perhaps you need to look at the list of items to be auctioned that day, converse with the bidders to see where their interests lie and estimate their probable wealth, use your lore skill to estimate the item values, then place your secret bids on one or more of the different items. -

I suspect you're probably right. Has anybody successfully completed and released a Kickstarted FPS game? -
How about: give AV a higher deflection vs. ranged (+30?) and lower vs melee (+10?) scale down the AV deflection by the armor recovery speed Probably getting too complicated at this point.
