And as much as I jest, there are people who are probably reading this wondering why Obsidian cares about money.- 95 replies

My Eye Floaters are nowhere near big enough to cause problems. I feel for anyone that is negatively affected by Floaters. -

Backer Reward Shipment Poll
Bryy replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
#2. I'm not getting a physical, but it seems aesthetically lame to get everything but not the disc. This is one hell of a pickle you guys are in, though. -
The running joke about the gaming-kickstarter community is that there needs to be a Steve Dengler Tier and a Notch Tier.

Sequel to Ultima Underworld out on Kickstarter now!
Bryy replied to IndiraLightfoot's topic in Computer and Console
This is not an EA Kickstarter. -
It's not the perceived length that's the problem, it's the low level themselves. In my experience with early levels in IE and NWN games, they were the most annoying, by far. Damage mitigation was done by attacks missing, but since everybody had low HP it made the fights swingy. And since everybody had only one attack per round and a low attack bonus, it made the fights longer as well. So yes, if you told me a D&Ds inspired game (or a NWN module) made you spend half its length in the early levels, I'd be worried as well. Again, you are using your pre-conceived notion of "levels" to dictate your thoughts.

Dude. A lot of stuff in Alpha Protocol was extremely adult. Unless by "adult" you just mean sex.

Update #88: Final Sprint and... Release Date!
Bryy replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I assume we'll be far beyond Update 90 before the game hits. -
O.k. but why go for a sequel? That is what we know from the AAA studios. Sequel after sequel. If they use kickstarter again it would be nice they would throw something new into the ring. Because sequels sell. It's an a "publisher" concept. They have a stable world to play in, they want to make new stories in it, plus they know it will sell.

They really only have "LOOK AT US" right now. -
WHY DOES VIVIENNE KEEP APPROVING OF ME KILLING NUGS?

Context is key. The mechanics of the game support the world, it's actually really cool.

I in no way want to come off as sounding pissed. I'm not. I just made this thread as a general question because of beta limitation or something.

Right! Instead, they'll be a little more diplomatic when they tell it like it is: you have a long wait, Bryy, before you ever see an Eternity game on Xbox. That quote only reinforces my statement. PoE was developed for PC. That doesn't mean consoles are out of the question. If it makes good business sense, I'm sure they'll do it. But for right now, developing a straight PC game without having to worry about a parallel console version is their gameplan. Nowhere in that statement will you find any hint of "console peasents", which I think you are implying there is.
-
Are the NPCs in their final form? Where you just click on them and see a wall of text? You can't interact with them or anything? I'm just asking because some of the things we were asked on the survey seemed to imply much more robust roles.

My old school solid UI mock-up for Pillars of Eternity
Bryy replied to Grotesque's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
What do you mean "did not work"? It didn't pull off the intended result well. I respect the concept, but it's an On Paper thing. -
So would making console versions of the game. I suspect you don't actually understand what Obsidian is trying to do here. Okay, let's move it back a bit. Not going for consolization has nothing to do with not wanting "these type of players". Let's not imply Obsidian doesn't want it to have appeal past the target audience. Unfortunately. Obsidian is a business. More than that: Obsidian is in the business of people having fun, and many of their customers play consoles and are no doubt feeling left out by no console version. I have no doubt that PoE will be ported sometime down the line. PoE being PC-exclusive always had the underlying implication that it was to make a great base game without having to translate those mechanics to new platforms right away. These people are professionals, they are not going to have some jaded "PC Master Race/Consoles kill games" mentality of an average forum-user.

Unless you're already established, it's going to be extremely hard to just break into any industry with a pitch. There's nobody you "just go to". Thousands of screenplays are thrown out per year. Just plain thrown in the dumpster. Doing it yourself is an incredibly daunting proposition. But it works if you go into it with a clear head and a definite idea of what you need. Not want. Need. What is your budget? Who do you need to work with? Can you trust them? The main thing about developing a product is that you have to treat it more mechanically than you would want. You can't go into it thinking "but this is what it will be". The thing will change, it will evolve, there will be additions, but far more subtractions. What about a GDD is hard for you?
