Harsh man. The mechanics were fine, you just had to play it like an RPG, not a shooter. Once you understood how the game played and worked it wasn't that bad. That being said I obviously mastered the mechanics and got used to it so I guess it is a little less of an issue to me. Writing wise I thought it was great. It is sort of a B but not quite A tier Sci Fi movie thing, it is mostly serious but when it gets cheesy it does so in a tasteful and funny way. They also nailed the setting, which I feel they lost some touch with in ME2 and 3. So Bioware game rating train huh.... uh let's see.... From best to worst: ME1, ME2, BG2, DA:O, ME3, KotOR, BG, NWN (only thanks to modders though), JE, SWTOR (I guess it counts even if it is an MMO), and DA2. Bear in mind NWN is where I start considering the games "average to okay" and DA2 is the one Bioware game I consider "okay at best". It is a pretty weak game and definitely the worst they ever made short of things like MDK2 or other things I never played.

Game looks great, but...
Karkarov replied to Zwiebelchen's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Beta is exactly for us to give feedback on the game and propose changes. Plus changing the perpective of the 3D model to be exactly like ingame (Top down view, tiny) won't cost anything significant. At least have this as an option. It is to give feedback on game mechanics and bugs yes. Stuff like "You should rename Might to Power so it is less confusing because Might implies it has something to do with physical strength when in reality it effects all damage." It is not to say "I don't like your character models you need to create better resources for them." You want to change the order in which character creation happens? Maybe they will do that. Personally I don't see the point, they have already said you can import portraits so you can make your character looks like whatever you want and you WILL be able to find a matching portrait even if you have to make it yourself. Meanwhile you do realize the isometric character model is the character model you see in the inventory screen? It is just not at an isometric angle and is slightly zoomed in. -
I fixed your post for you. I have yet to see anyone on this forum unabashedly love Bioware and think they can do no wrong. I will gladly admit I like Mass Effect 1 more than any infinity engine game, period. But even I won't try to sell you on DA2 being a great game though, it was blatantly rushed, most of the cast were annoying and idiotic, and the story read like average at best fan fiction. The problem is this forum is populated by an army of Bioware haters (who knows why they feel that way) who basically hate everything they make for no other reason than that they made it.

Hiding helmet option
Karkarov replied to namelessthree's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Apparently Godlikes can't wear helmets. Too many horny protrusions on their heads. I agree though that I always have them wear a helmet, it is a gear slot and makes sense. That said though people like looking at the characters they created and I do like the hide helmet option when it is available because lots of developers suck at making nice looking helmets. -
Hiding helmet option
Karkarov replied to namelessthree's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Actually thinking about the Big Head mode it would be nice if some of the helmets were ridiculously over sized. Imagine BG1 with a Amn Guard helm and big head mode? Hahahahahahahahahaha. -
Well one could say the same to you since you are going a bit off the deep end being an ass. I will be a adult and say I was wrong about the development credits. It doesn't change the fact that Modern Bioware has almost none of the same people working for it as worked on BG, or that they as a company do not associate themselves specifically with BG though many other developers do. Nor does it change my opinion about who is or is not the better villain.

Bioware didn't make Baldur's Gate, Black Isle did. There are tons of game companies out there who claim to be "by the makers of (or minds behind) Baldur's Gate", these days Bioware doesn't even need an introduction and if they did they would say "The people who made Mass Effect". I am not trying to be a jerk here and honestly I like your post, I just want to be clear Bioware didn't make Sarevok or Irenicus. I still feel Saren is a better enemy than either, though it is a close thing with Irenicus.

BIG HEAD mode is in
Karkarov replied to Labadal's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Indeed Lephys. If it weren't for your efforts we would never be able to keep our heads above water. As an aside, seriously guys? Why does every thread on this forum have to be super serious and go anal retentive? There was no effort put into making Big Head mode specifically, the testing involved was going to be done regardless. To even insinuate resources are being taken from core game mechanics to make this happen is laughable. Little eater eggs like this are part of what make games fun, and we as gamers should ALWAYS get behind developers who want to inject a little more of themselves through humor or whatever means in our games. Lastly for all we backed Eternity and care about it I hate to be brutal but this is Obsidian's life and prosperity, not their buck 20, not their hobby, not something they do to relax. They deserve to have a chance to laugh while making this game and have fun with it, don't try to take that away. -
Icewind Dale games are dungeon crawlers, your parties motivation literally has no bearing on the game at all. So yeah.., it sucks for an evil party, it sucks for any party to be honest unless your role playing a group of random do gooders whose only motivation is to do good and there is nothing else to them. It is only of the reasons why it is not even close to the best IE games, despite being the best mechnically save maybe NWN2 (minus the bugs).

Game looks great, but...
Karkarov replied to Zwiebelchen's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
You guys REALLY need to wait for the real game not a compressed video on some website where you are forced to choose a barbarian in rags. The character model does look ugly, it also happens to be wearing ugly gear with ugly color choices. I am sure that isn't a contributing factor at all. Meanwhile we are two weeks from a "near final" beta. It is too late in the game to do some massive overhaul of character creation. You could argue that it is not a "near final" beta but I would remind you this is the same company that wouldn't let media outlets have control of the demo for fear of them showing or seeing something that was not polished enough for their liking. -
Right there. Mass Effect 1 is it's own stand alone game. Yes the story clearly was meant to continue but it didn't "have" to. It was the last game Bioware made before the EA acquisition and I dare it is probably the best game they ever made as far as I am concerned. It definitely has the best villain they ever came up with in the form of Saren.

I don't know what's with all the hate. I will be happy to play Dragon Age: Inquisition and I am willing to bet it turns out to be a fun game. I also really liked Mass Effect (so sue me). I am known among friends for bitching at people for deriding a movie too hard by saying "Every movie doesn't have to be the Shawshank Redemption or Schindler's List". Well every RPG doesn't have to be BG2.

BIG HEAD mode is in
Karkarov replied to Labadal's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I am sorry ashton, were you trying to make a joke? It must have gone... over my head. -
This is a cumbersome way to accomplish a task that, if made easy, could bring hundreds of thousands of additional dollars to Obsidian over the next couple of weeks as backers who weren't able to add the backer beta originally (like myself) scramble to do so. I wont say you are wrong. If anyone wants to see the "official" answer and best email for this look no further than this post. http://forums.obsidian.net/topic/66352-upgrading-from-digital-to-box-set/?p=1460273

BIG HEAD mode is in
Karkarov replied to Labadal's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Lets say the resource requirement wasn't an issue But Bruce, the resource requirement is an issue. Exactly, a hypothetical comparison at least needs to make sense to be reasonable. These two features don't even have anything in common to begin with... of course I could imagine both being implemented with bioware like sex scenes would be pretty hilarious. Well.... let's not get ahead of ourselves. -
Conversation interface
Karkarov replied to Lord_Darkmmon76's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The conversation UI could take up the entire screen and you wouldn't technically be losing any functionality since the game is paused. I can sort of understand having a more minimal dialogue UI in a game where conversations happen in real-time and you might want to do other things concurrently, but it doesn't apply for PoE. Yeap, that. I am the much hated champion of the minimalist UI mockup wars of olden times and even I will tell you when you are paused in conversation you need a bigger convo box. When the action starts (and that additional view space is needed) the convo UI won't be there anymore. -
Except they said Objective EXP, not kill EXP. In the Mega Dungeon your objective could be reaching the next floor, which on some levels may be doable via stealthing but on many may not be possible without combat. It could be reaching a "checkpoint" on that level.... which just so happens to have an enemy group sitting on you have to fight to reach. I doubt you will need to clear 10 or more encounters in the megadungeon without getting some kind of exp reward. There are lots of ways to reward EXP for combat accomplishments without actually giving you exp per kill. Also people keep ignoring the fact that you still get rewards for combat. You get money, items, whatever. Just not EXP for your kills. Unless killing someone was a quest objective...

No, I think you had it right the first time. After all... Sawyer can be rather big headed. -
BIG HEAD mode is in
Karkarov replied to Labadal's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Man the turmoil in this thread sure came to a head didn't it? -
How can this still be going on? We have objective based EXP in Eternity people, debating it any further at this point is the quintessential beating of a dead horse. It is literally too late to change the system in any meaningful way and this has already been debated into the ground more than once. Lephys, I think you are an okay dude, I like most of your posts and think you have a lot of good points most of the time. However, you do have a penchant for making really really long complex responses when you could have stated them in a much more straight forward and simple way. It is hard to keep up a conversation with someone if you write one sentence and they reply with three paragraphs. Also you do have a habit of belaboring the point maybe more than you need to. All that aside who is right and who is wrong is meaningless, Obsidian is too far into developing the game to change how EXP works. Once the beta hits we need to be ready to move our feedback away from these broad sweeping categories we have been hammering for over a year and scope in on specifics. Like "I feel the Dire Fireball spell AOE is a little too small compared to the normal fireball, since it has fewer uses it need a little more bang for your buck to really be worth the trade off of fewer casts." Stuff like that. The days of large changes that effected the core mechanics themselves are gone.

I think you have that backwards. You create a character, then you assign stats to suit the character you are creating. It has been over a decade since I played a game (out side of games that have static protagonists or are pure dungeon crawls) where I had to "roll" a character and take what I got. Almost every role playing system is based on point buy's and so is Eternity. So again, you get to decide what you want to play and distribute those stats based on those decisions. If you are distributing stats and then saying "what does this guys stats say about them" then you are doing it wrong. That is called "Roll Playing" or to some extent being a Munchkin. I have made it clear in multiple posts all over this forum I am not big fan of either.
