  1. I'd rather have a believable world rather than trying to fill some PC quota. As some other people said, gender roles evolved that way because men and women have different strengths. Like it or not, most men will be better at fighting and wielding heavy armor etc. Because the average man is physically stronger than the average woman. In a fantasy setting with Renaissance level tech, it would make even less sense to try to be "PC" about that kind of thing because technology had not evolved to the point where having women in roles traditionally occupied by men is logical. (i.e. the female Apache pilot example) I also am not a huge fan of the trend I see in our culture of "hey let's pretend men and women are exactly the same". It's just not true, and it infects entertainment/media with a bland aftertaste whenever I see it being "pushed". Not accusing anyone in this thread of saying that, but that's my bias, so I don't like anything that "feels" that way. I didn't feel that way with Brienne, because GRRM clearly was not trying to do it to fill some PC quota. I hope it's the same with PE is all I'm saying. Don't do ANYTHING to try to cater to some quota. If you do characters/settings/whatever come off as unbelievable and not "real". It's just like how when you see some corporate advertising where they're talking about their diversity and you see one person of every possible racial background in a warm, fuzzy "let's all work together on this project" picture. It's just silly and makes it hard to take seriously because it's so clearly staged. That's the same vibe I get whenever I see media trying to be "inclusive" for the sake of it.
  2. Ya boring combat is a problem with some RPGs, I'm surprised you did 80 hours of Skyrim though, nothing bores me like the combat in Elder Scrolls games (granted I've only tried Oblivion and that was enough for me... also Fallout 3 which had the same style despite it being guns and all that) Try out ToEE with circle of eight mod if you're looking for a refreshing take on the genre. Unfortunately the story is lacking. It's got a lot of atmosphere though and the combat is best I've seen in a CRPG. Has an almost oppressive vibe though, it's very dark (a lot of this comes from the music, which is quite different from your typical fantasy stuff). Combat is TOUGH too (a huge plus for me).I remember it took me like 30 tries to kill a certain hill giant. I really wish PE had gone that route for combat but oh well.
  3. If there is humor in this game I hope it models itself on PG Wodehouse. No one makes me laugh like his writing, and I never read "humor". He nails that "comedy of manners" type of humor perfectly, which is usually the kind of thing you see in humor between companions. Anyone who reads a lot needs to check his stuff out. He's probably overall my favorite writer period. Just a few random quotes from wiki (from his stories) and elsewhere, even out of context and without knowing the characters I think you can get the "vibe": Honoria, you see, is one of those robust, dynamic girls with the muscles of a welterweight and a laugh like a squadron of cavalry charging over a tin bridge. A beastly thing to face over the breakfast table. Brainy, moreover. 'I hate you, I hate you!' cried Madeline, a thing I didn't know anyone ever said except in the second act of a musical comedy. Gussie, a glutton for punishment, stared at himself in the mirror. Like so many substantial citizens of America, he had married young and kept on marrying, springing from blonde to blonde like the chamois of the Alps leaping from crag to crag. There are girls, few perhaps but to be found if one searches carefully, who when their advice is ignored and disaster ensues, do not say "I told you so". Mavis was not of their number. I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled. It was one of the dullest speeches I ever heard. The Agee woman told us for three quarters of an hour how she came to write her beastly book, when a simple apology was all that was required. It was a confusion of ideas between him and one of the lions he was hunting in Kenya that had caused A. B. Spottsworth to make the obituary column. He thought the lion was dead, and the lion thought it wasn't.
  4. Bernard Cornwell -- see Arthur series especially. (and Saxon one, though it's less fantastical) I second the Silmarillion too, though I haven't finished it yet. There's parts of it that are much darker than anything in LOTR and more alien. The creation story just by itself is pretty amazing.
  5. I'm torn on this tbh. Reloading cheapens the experience, but not reloading means I miss out on potentially sweet content if it's a really interesting character. These days I do lean towards not reloading though.
  6. That's pretty cool stuff. Where can I read about it? (Eastern European vampire folklore that is)
  7. Ya, I kinda agree with this. It is kinda strange that a lot of times it's men posting it
  8. Not sure honestly. Permadeath is a great feature in games that have randomly generated content (i.e. roguelikes) because you're not really "repeating" anything, but I could see it getting frustrating in a game that's much more linear. On the other hand, it makes gameplay about 10x more intense, which is a massive advantage. We'll see I guess, not sure now. Got 2 years to decide though
  9. I'm mostly just worried about people putting in meme stuff, MLP references and that kind of thing. If they're just putting in fantasy versions of themselves or of characters they've played in P&P that's totally fine.
  10. is still don't get the rush at the end i can understand that people are very enthusiastic in the beginning and pledge but why does the same happen at the end? i mean you had 30 days to pledge, why pledge at the last moments? Probably people who have been putting it off for whatever reason (not sure if they can afford it) etc. who finally cave to the ticking clock pressure
  11. ^That would actually be pretty cool. *Get to 12th level* Bump into boatman "Oh hai, I'm Charon"
  12. I mean that's quite a lot, I hope they can just be people standing around at a tavern or something... I want Avellone and co. to be able to design at least some of the main story NPCs ya know
  13. They're probably going to have ~3.75-3.8 mil including paypal by the time all is said and done.
  14. ^Yes that''s a great idea. So many cool possibilites gameplay and storwise with that one.
  15. I hope with the whole soul mechanic thieves can have unique magical abilities just for them... just for example (stealing some of these ideas from other games, pretty much Tome4 ) -A spell that lets you phase out of reality partially and travel short distances through walls to appear on the other side. -A spell that lets you impart some of your "soul energy" to your own dark shadow to assassinate and confuse enemies (think twisted version of Peter Pan) -A spell that lets you backtrack 3 seconds in time to your previous position, and status. -A spell that slows time itself for the thief. (so for example, they would get 2 attacks or move twice as far for each attack or move of another character... while also letting them dodge arrows with ease) -A spell that casts a blinding light that illuminates the surrounding area and blinds any nearby monsters. (magical flashbang) Just a few ideas. Basically magical abilities that go with traditional rogue themes (sneakiness, deadly critical attacks, recon) I really hope they can go beyond typical D&D rogue stuff. I think the class has potential for much much more.
  16. Ya I kinda completely disagree with the OP. Jargon makes even something mundane much more interesting. Moar jargon!
  17. Although I haven't watched the whole series, I found the character "Ryuk" in the Death Note manga series (I've actually only watched the anime but same difference) one of the more interesting fictional "diety" portrayals I've come across. Basically (minor spoilers), he chucks his "death note" (that allows him to decide who dies and how) book into the human world for the sole reason that he's bored and wants to see what happens when a mortal picks it up and decides to use it. Very Greek mythology-esque but with a nice twist. One of the neat scenes in the series is Ryuk casually eating an apple while talking to the protagonist and sitting there on a desk in the guy's bedroom while looking completely out of place. It was pretty surreal but a bit humorous at the same time. He's more of a sort of grim reaper type character than a "god" per say, but still pretty "supernatural". Anyways, I guess this is all meaningless if you haven't read/watched it, but it's good stuff But ya something like that would be cool.
  18. I know this thread is about IWD (which I haven't played),,, but since it's also kind of about combat... just gotta say I'm playing through ToEE right now (with the Co8 mod) and MAN. Really amazing stuff. I'd kill for a strong narrative paired with that combat system.
  19. Obsidian really needs to put up some big stretch goals (i.e. 3, 3.5 and 4 million) ASAP. People are just not going to be motivated by these stretch goals that keep getting set 100 or 200k ahead of where the ticker is at because those goals will inevitably be met. I really think they're be bringing in more dough if they had something very tempting up for 3.5 million right now for example.
