  1. Hey Feargus, do you have any idea how common Softimage XSI is in the games industry? I went to Vancouver Film School and this is the package they teach, I've tried going back to MAX(Though to be honest the version I tried was 5, 6 had just came out at the time and I don't know what improvements they've added), which was the one I used in High School, but the modeling tools just don't compare to XSI. I have a couple friends at EA who say you can use whatever you want there, but from the various reports and such of employee abuse it doesn't look like thats the kind of place I really want to work.
  2. That wasn't what I was saying: I'm completely cool with managing any number of uber-level characters. However, I can see why some people might not be. I enjoy characters developing and getting more powerful. The challenge for the developer is to pace that progression satisfactorily. What happens in your game where everyone is level 12? Where do they go? What do they do? The game ends? I'm not putting an arbitrary limit on it, but at the end of an epic CRPG I want to be able to kick almost everybody's butt... it's fantasy, not a day at the office. Cheers MC <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hehe, I was just poking fun. I think too many games go all freaky with the levels. I agree that there should be no level limit, but through good game design and available experience you limit the levels. I think crazy high levels limits sequel opportunities. Like with KotOR, a lot of people were pissed off that you couldn't play as Revan in KotOR 2, well thats because he was level 20 and nothing could challenge him anymore. End the first game around level 8-12, and you could have easily brought him into KotOR2. Personally I liked using the Exile instead, but with lower level limits it increases sequel possibilites.
  3. Neither is numbers 1's really. Not that many bad guys in JRPGs , most just seem to have a higher purpose that would end up killing a lot of people. IV's bad guy is pretty dispicable though. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The bad guy in 1 isn't really the bad guy, the chick manipulating him is. The bad guy of 3 is just plain ****ed up, and when you look at the FFs the villains are all pretty evil. Especially Ultimecia. Wanting to destroy all creation for no reason. Well, no reason that was revealed, since you don't meet her until you fight her, there isn't really any time to explain. God that was such a bad villain. The people who wrote that game should never work in RPGs again.
  4. That's like saying that a game's story is good just because it's better than, say, Pacman's story. Suikoden 1 was absolutely dreadful. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hehehe, touche. Though I think it was more due to bad localization rather than it actually being a bad story. It was better than Legend of Dragoon... God that game sucked so bad, I couldn't even make it to the 2nd disc. The best thing about Suikoden 2's story is that the bad guy isn't a bad guy.
  5. I agree. There shouldn't be so many epic leveled characters. Keep it around level 12. Anyway, as for the party based thing, I think it really depends what kind of game you're going for. Sometimes I like the BG style NPCs, and sometimes I like the Fallout style. The Fallout style ones are more like NPCs, while the BG style are more like pre-generated PCs. So if you think about it that way, its almost like using AI controlled characters is more party based than if you control them all, because if you're a lousy roleplayer all those characters are just you. Personally I have no preference, as long as theres good party interaction, which there was in BG and PS:T but there wasn't in NWN or Fallout.
  6. Propaganda. Your number is *much* to high. Even the sum of the citizens of both towns didn't exeed 500,000. As far as I know, about 100,000 civilians died from the direct blast (or within months). And some others died from cancer decades later. But definitely not *everybody* died <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sorry, my bad, I was just going by numbers I had heard before, after looking it up it was more around 200,000. 140,000 at Hiroshima, 65,000 at Nagasaki. Plus radiation deaths.
  7. Heres something that screws your theory. The Exile knew her mother. You can get the conversation where you tell her that her mother was a jedi and a great warrior without talking to Kreia or Handmaiden about it beforehand.
  8. I met her once, but I was too distracted by Rebecca Romijin's blue nakedness to really pay attention. (I was on set for filming the part of X-Men 2 where Mystique in Deathstryke's form, breaks into Styker's office) Saw some really funny outtakes that didn't make it onto the DVD that really should have, such as Wolverine acting like a complete fruitcake, it was awesome.
  9. I doubt Kreia was Handmaiden's mother. Just because Kavar thought she died on Malachor doesn't mean anything because hundreds if not thousands of Jedi died on Malachor. Also, it was also said that Revan had many masters. Though Atton does say he thinks she may have been beautiful once.
  10. go here: http://www.lucasforums.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=324 And look for a thread called "Droid Planet" I believe. The modules and such were cut from the PC version so someone with a modded Xbox ripped it from the Xbox version and posted all the files there.
  11. You wouldnt be the first one to hate the trinity system. ShadowHearts isnt that hard to get to grips with. Cant play it at 3am though. I've also found a variety of items which modify the ring and the speed the needle moves at. Plus you can upgrade it, overall I think its easier than Gladius to get the hang of. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I didn't hate the trinity system, I think it served the story very well, but I agree that it lacked the Suikoden feel. Though all in all it was a far superior game to Suikoden 1.
  12. I am NOT saying they shouldn't have dropped the bomb. I am saying it probably wasn't necessary to drop the bombs. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, I know this and agree with you on this. What I have said is that otherwise the war would have lasted much longer in this scenario (with many casualties on BOTH sides, of course). <{POST_SNAPBACK}> They didn't even have to invade Japan, they had no fuel supply, and their industry was in ruins, within a month their war machine would have been crippled and they would not have been able to continue. And in that time the US could have switched to defensive tactics which would have inflicted some small military casualties, but 800,000 civilians wouldn't have died. Several sources have said that the japanese were ready to surrender, and the casualty predictions of a japanese invasion were inflated by politicians to get support for using the bomb. Even if it was necessary to use the bomb, its pretty agreeable that they didn't need to use two.
  13. Usually its teams instead of just two individuals. Depending on the general bias of the board, it could be that Team A is two or three times the size of Team B or vice versa, resulting in a one-sided flame war of Team A or B. (I post on the CHUD forums where everyone is pretty much all left leaning and whenever the one or two conservatives chime in about how just because 7 white guys beat and hung the black guy then painted racist remarks on the guy, doesn't mean its race related - I made that situation up, but thats generally what happens..)
  14. yay! I don't mind stricter moderators as long as it doesn't get as bad as the bioware boards reportedly are.
  15. Obsidian is made up of mostly old Black Isle employees, and is run by the old head of Black Isle. Black Isle had a good reputation for listening to fans and implementing some fan ideas they feel would make the game better. So most of us veterans came here after Black Isle died to show our support. So far they haven't disappointed except for the complete lack of board presence after the game was released and the NWN2 forums got moved. But Feargus is making up for that now and all is forgiven So anyway, the point of going to a game's forums before its released is to discuss the possibilities and hopefully give the devs some ideas.
  16. Hrmm, My favorite series so far is George RR Martin's Song of Ice and Fire, I've also quite enjoyed Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, and the Harry Potter books are surprisingly good. The Jack McKinney Robotech novels are what got me into books. The Margaret Weis/Tracy Hickman Darksword trilogy and various Dragonlance books have been good. I don't read much other than fantasy.
  17. I have this as my wallpaper: http://forums.obsidianent.com/index.php?ac...ype=post&id=889
  18. Sounds cool. I know the reviews I read mainly talked about 3 things: The ship movement(Slow, bad controls), The encounter rate, and apparenly its like half as long as the other Suikoden games.
  19. I'm gonna have to pimp Firefly some too. And the upcoming Firefly movie Serenity. Firefly is by far the best sci fi show I've ever seen
  20. What's the bonus you get for getting all 108 stars? 2's bonus was a little disappointing, you get the best magic spell in the game, but unlike 1 and 3, it doesn't affect the story. The thing with the Final Fantasy false endings is you think to yourself "Wait a minute, I still have 2 discs left" With Suikoden 2, they didn't waste space with all those FMVs so you only had one disc. You just think "Wow, this game is only 20 hours?" Then boom, you still have another 20 or 30.
  21. Yeah if you want that kind of website its pretty good. Really easy to set up and such. Mine is just one of the standard templates with an image map jammed in the top and an expanded sidebar.
  22. Well first of all After playing Suikoden 1, the story just blows you away. At one point after you kill a major boss you think to yourself, "Man, he's dead already?" then you realize he's not the end boss and you still have another half of the game to go. The characters are fantastic, and your stronghold gets all sorts of little filler people in there to make it feel more like a city than a castle. Its longer than Suikoden 3 without relying on a gimmick like the trinity sight system to do it, and without feeling forced. The army battles are actually strategic, the spritework is amazing, etc. etc. etc. Its just an all around great game. It has that Suikoden feel where YOU are the main character, you're not just moving someone else around. Something that the trinity sight system ignored. (Hugo was such a little bitch)
