I'm more than willing to give a game a little trust with reprehensible scenes. But I need that to pay off in a way that's meaningful for why I'm playing the game. Walker burns civilians alive and at the end I get to kill him for it. Trevor tortures a guy, but stops a terrorist attack, and even saves the life of the guy he tortured. This is why I dislike it so much when a game, especially an RPG, forces me into an action or inaction from which only bad things result. Because I trusted the game to pay off for that action and it didn't.

I'm not sure what you're saying. But I will say this. If the player is forced to do something, then no, I don't accept the negative consequences of that action. I'll say it again, the player should never be punished for choices he was not allowed to make. White phosphorous worked for me in Spec-Ops because the player was never really punished for it. Walker was punished for it. That's what I saw in the ending, the opportunity for me, the player, to punish Walker. And with that the overall tragedy fit well. And that's one reason I don't see The Line type narratives working in RPGs. I think RPGs should be about making choices the player can own. Though I also feel his talk of silent judgements can work in the genre and I especially like the idea of implementing rationalization into RPGs, give players a choice of rationalization to grow the character.

I don't think I've seen that video, thanks.

It plays against the stereotypes of modern war games and I more than admire the game for that. It's set in Dubai and the enemies are other American soldiers. It's a game that builds up its themes. A perhaps cynical theme some will take as an insult, others will consider pretentious and assumptive. It is a game about thoughtless violence in pursuit of heroism. Some people think it's trying to speak about them as players or about war, but I think the real message is just about the games. Maybe I give it too much credit. Maybe I make excuses for where those themes fail and I shift it to where those themes work. I don't think that really matters, death of the author and all that. It's trying to have meaning apart from those around it. It accomplishes meaning apart from those around it. And that's significant to me.

The enthusiasm the trailer gave me is now tempered. http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/10/09/thief-hands-on-the-life-and-times-of-a-kleptomanic-clock-tower-cosh-ninja/

I actually like that trailer. The set piece bit not so much. But it focused on stealth and stealing, not shooting people in the face like we're used to making fun of it for.

Are we to discuss Yager, of which we have little detail or knowledge of their next project, or are we to create from whole cloth FPS game ideas we'd like to see?

Planescape: Torment still. Getting the bronze sphere for Pharod. It's kind of nice just how little I remember of this game.

One thing I came upon recently is varying sentence length. I'm not sure it's a one size fits what everyone does, but it helps me look over my own work without feeling too mechanical or tedious. Instead of having nothing but long sentences where things go on and on, have some shorter sentences. Just a little.

I'm getting an SCP (IN SPACE) vibe from these videos. I like it.

I should hope so!

Nobody told me Goodbye Deponia was coming out in a week and a half! I thought I had another year to wait for the thing. I'm actually really excited. Big fan of the previous two.

http://www.shsforums.net/files/file/647-pst-ultimate-weidu-fixpack-v413/ Yes, Qwinn's fixpack has been essential for PS:T for years, just like the G3 fixpack has been to Baldur's Gate 2. Also the Unfinished Business, UI mod and the tweak pack from the same place are great. Yeah, I have all of those installed. It's just that they finally fixed Ice Knife. It took until August of 2012, but someone did it.

Finished Dragon Age 2. Now to play something else. I want something particularly good. I'd even play Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition if they had fixed the quest bugs in the tutorial. Maybe it's time I gave Planescape: Torment a second go. Or maybe Dead Space 2. Got Dead Space 3 from the Humble Origin bundle, so might as well. Edit: Did everyone know about this? http://www.shsforums.net/files/file/647-pst-ultimate-weidu-fixpack-v413/

Despite all the criticism in teh interwebz, I loved this game because most of the times I really had a hard time telling who was actually "good" and who was "bad". I'm not sure how you had that difficulty. The bad guys were the ones trying to kill you for no reason. Even if you agreed with them. IE everybody.

Dragon Age II Back to it after a GTA hiatus. Thankfully I got through the DLC before it, because I'm in Act 3 now and it's hard to be motivated to push forward. It's not Mass Effect's Mako bad, but I don't see it interfering with my nightly reading or writing.

That seems a bizarre thing to be glad of. Like being happy your preferred soda comes in red can instead of a brown one. A game's a game.

I generally find the controller better when the game is designed for twin stick. Overlord is the game that really sold me on that idea. Rogue Legacy, Hotline Miami, I'll even prefer it for Skyrim. But an FPS? That will be a hard sell.

So, no real chance of playing that non-violent? That was my real hope for GTA Online, being able to play a non-criminal, and just cruise around with people on bikes, or play golf with people, or whatever, and stay away from murder-fest 2013. If it's all just people shooting each other, I have zero interest in it. Of course, as long as there's no PC version, it's all a moot point anyway. You can play non-violent, I just don't see anything to do. I wanted to do co-op or stuff. But all the missions are deathmatch, race, or objective where you're still shooting at each other. There's supposed to be tennis and golf, but I'm not sure if that unlocks later, it's not showing on my map. And again there's racing, but I don't care for that at all. I wanted to do heists and car chases. I wanted to assault gang turf, take on the military base, or other criminally co-op things. But nope... deathmatch or race.

Finally tried GTA Online. It's a glorified deathmatch lobby. Awful.

You ran into huge issues on Tatooine's plot, IIRC, didn't you? That was the game stopper, yes. Found it to be rather tedious prior to that. I enjoyed comparing it to a cross between a game show and those old ads in comic books where a beach bully kicks sand on the guy. Lacked any motivation in either narrative it was dragging around. The Great Hunt was bizarrely complicated setup for just killing some dudes. And the antagonist was petty, acted like a high school bully with a gun. I'm not even sure what his problem was.

I can't let this go without disagreement. I found it unbearable.

http://tommyrefenes.tumblr.com/post/62476523677/my-time-with-the-steam-controller And Refenes (Super Meat Boy developer) is back. His summary. However, he seemed to focus on game's intended for a controller. Good news that it might be just as good for controller designed games. But I want to know more about games designed for M+K.
