Who is Mirke?
Mikeymoonshine replied to Infinitron's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Well when Obs did the Ydwin stretch goal they said they would replace her with another sidekick if the goal was hit, so it's possible they just already done some work on making the new sidekick and this was Mirke. Why waste a good portrait and a unique character model, when u can earn some goodwill by releasing it as free dlc? I could be wrong tho I have no insider info. -
wizards were initially crappier in the beta which is when I remember most of the complaining happened. In fact most casters were, I remember my cipher being especially awful. But then they changed it and now the balence is ok now it's just enemies all seem to have really low health and there are too many ways of boosting power level.

Torment took too long for them to make and a lot of people just stopped caring, they also cut quite a bit of content. 3 companions, a major city, italian localization (that one seemed reasonable tbh) some of the cut stuff were stretch goals too. It also wasn't all well recieved, critics rated it decently but users did not.

Hard to say, I am pretty sure they went over budget for POE but then it did pretty well so they made money from that game. They were working on Deadfire for a year before fig and did stuff after like full VO even though the stretch goal only doubled the VO budget so I doubt it was enough for full VO. So it's not easy to know how much money they would have to make for a sequel to be viable. I find it unlikely they have not made any sort of profit though, but I am hardly an expert. There is also fig investments to consider.

POE is also ahead of Deadfire on Gog atm (Tyranny is too actually) , so yeah it seems like Deadfire has attracted a lot of new players who have decided to try out the first game as well. The whole point of Kickstarting POE was so that they didn't have to cowtow to big publishers and make some shallow sandbox rpg. It doesn't need to have mass appeal I feel like some people are forgetting this.

Well she does rightfully put an incredible entitled man in his place I guess, but then there is also a female ship captain that abuses her crew members and generally treats people like garbage so....bravo Obsidina of having a veriety of female characters who aren't glorified or demonised simply for being female???? This is like when people were saying dragon age inquisition was a SJW game for having several women in the positions of power even though almost all of them were completely incompetant leaders just like the male leaders
-
Sjw used to just kinda refer to people who were awful about it, people who would derail discussions with demonising, dog piling, doxing and other such bs because someone said something they considered to be offensive. I didn't like those people much (i still don't) so I did used to use that term sometimes but now it's just a slur against the left. Or worse it's a part of someone's legitimate political position, like they seriously believe the "SJWs" are in control of everything and opressing the poor conservative white men or whatever. Anyone who isn't interested in playing into the hands of the right and even like literal nazis should drop the term or at least only use it ironically and get a life.

By "SJW adaptations" I assume the OP doesn't mean the politics in the game right? Because this isn't really a very political game, it deals with heavy political themes sure (like colonization of native cultures) but it isn't pushing you to any kind of conclusion, it shows positive and negitive traits with every faction including the native faction. Or is the OP referring to something like the fact that there are same sex romance options, couldn't be as silly as that right?

I would disagree with him, if it wasn't confirmed by Josh himself that they cut Dialogue casue they went for full VO. Specially Stuff with Eothas and main quest. Yes but that was a bad descision plus I am pretty sure Josh said something along the lines of it being due to the flow of the conversation not that there was some budget choice between the full ending and full VO but I can't find the quote so feel free to correct me. There was plenty of fluff in the voiced sections of the game that just didn't need to be there and could have been cut instead of the ending. -
Charging for that would be a terrible business decision, she's already in the game so making her a sidekick doesn't really add much at all in the way of content. A new pose and a handful of beers isn't much either it would be no better than a microtransaction and that was how it would be seen. Even if they were adding her as a companion it would be seen badly as it's close to release and she is in the game. Doing it for free on the other hand could potentially drive sales, it worked well for CDPR. It would be more of a concern if it was discounted in steam but that seems more like a smaller service using the popularity of the game to attract buyers to their plaform "it's cheaper here" ect. While the game is still fresh in people's minds.

"Some info is better than non" unless that info is false and then it's literally worse than non. I've already aknowledged that the numbers we do have on Steam are less than stellar but they also don't indicate some massive flop. Whether it's a success or not depends on a whole bunch of factors we don't have info on. Like what the actual numbers are, how their budgeting works and how much they actually need to sell to make a profit, I'm not actually even sure how pre orders factor into these charts but I assume they are what put it at the top of the chart initially. I would not be surprised if these sales are less than stellar looking at what we can see from steam and also considering the kind of game it actually is. POE was released during the Kickstarter era, at a time when everyone hated major publishers and promiced to deliver nostalgia. It succeeded in doing that for some but not for others. A sequel doesn't have all that it's a just a sequel to POE. Yet it was successfully funded and seems to be shifting some copies on top of that. So it's measure for success depends on Obsidian's budgeting and projections.

Of course the sales will have slowed but it's still hanging in the steam best sellers for now and doing great on GoG, doesn't look to be as strong as the last game but it's not like anyone can really say what it has sold for sure either way. Releasing free dlc's is a great idea, they do that and keep supporting the game with patches and maybe the game will have longevity. It worked for CDPR Comparisons to divinity os 2 are unfair. That game sold over a million copies in just over two months nobody expected that and nobody reasonable expects Deadfire to match those sales to be considered successful. There was a preload on steam.

Watched the whole video, too harsh on some aspects of the game especially odd when he is criticising story issues in deadfire and praising the story in POE even though both games have plots that don't allow much player agency or meaningful choice. I simply disagree with him about VO I think it was the best choice they could have made, what they need to do next is remove most of the descriptive writing in conversations and cut scenes, a lot of it simply isn't needed at all or it at least doesn't need to go into as much detail as it did. Like this guy just seems to think there shouldn't be much VO in this kind of game, that's a fine opinion to have but I don't think it's a majority opinion. Also implying that somehow the VO budget could have been spent on more QA testing is silly and not how budgeting works at all. More VO was even a stretch goal, it was something a lot of people wanted. Or saying it's full of bugs and by that he means that he's going to call the fact that the game isn't difficult enough a bug and bring up a handful of other bugs in the game and suggest a second delay which I doubt would have been possible. Still he makes a lot of good points and basically goes over every issue. -

There is a text adventure with Skaenites related to it, giving the souls to Woedica is something Skaen ask you to do. It's not mentioned by the gods though, but going by how my playthrough referred to 3 different POE1 ending choices throughout the game despite using a custom legacy... All the "break pledge" have consequences, some are not necessarily very visible, like Galawain buff/debuff certain enemies. Yeah I know there are some references to it, but I just don't think they reflect the choice properly. The whole point was to empower her to reclaim her position as ruler of the gods but Woedica is unchanged if you make that choice. One of my characters who did not empower Woedica can even say to ondra that "if it wasn't for me you would be in Woedica's shackles" but the gods are not subjegated by her in a world where you did empower her. It also is never explained why that is. Like they could have just had her say that she is for now focusing on Eothas and left the full consequences of this choice for whenever they end this story.- 4 replies
