I suppose but that was because you weren't guiding it, you were hunting down the person who was. I agree there could be a little more show not tell though.

I get the complaint but I also kind of liked the being thrown into the lore deep end thing. It felt like I wasn't having my hand held so much. If I didn't understand a reference or a word or a phrase I had to ask someone, read the codex, read books ect to find out. I can see why some would just not find this enjoyable though. Deadfire explains a bit to you but then throws you into the deep end again and I am enjoying constantly having to read about what some valian phrase or some huana word means. The pop up codex boxes from tyranny help there.

That is a good point that it was posted on valentines day and had those cutsey pictures. I think the point was to kinda joke about romance in video games so as to say "we are trying to create relationships that are more complicated than just romance options" whether or not they did that can be debated of course.

So both Pillars Of Eternity and Deadfire reviewed very well and were (so far for deadfire) well received by players too. However I do remember hearing a lot about how the story for POE was slow, boring , "dry" ect especially at the start. I've looked at a few reviews for this game and I am noticing that although it is reviewing very well some of the critics are saying the story is bad, they couldn't get into it and it's slow at the start. Now I don't think the story of Pillars Of Eternity is like the best story I have ever played in a video game or anything. I have plenty of criticisms of it but then I have plenty of criticisms of the story in many games. Compared to other games though I really don't get why it got these comments and although I am still pretty early on in Deadfire I feel the same about this game. What is it about the way these stories are told that is putting people off? Where as a relatively simplistic story like in the Divinity OS games does not seem to be getting this kind of response (and I am not bashing those games I loved those too). The "slow at the start" comments especially are odd as this is pretty standard for this kind of rpg and a lot of people who are making these arguments should know this.

I can accept the argument that if you are going to have romance options making your most popular character an option is probably sensible from a business standpoint but one could also argue that letting the writer do what they want with their character and not interfering just for the purposes of fan service is also sensible. This game was not funded based on any kind of assumption that Eder would be a romance option. The first game didn't have that option and romance was not in the initial pitch for this game. Romance was part of the relationships stretch goal which promised deeper relationships between you and your companions and between the companions themselves. Part of that was that some of those relationships may become romantic but they never indicated who with or how many. You say it is expected from backers that Eder will be an option but I backed this game and I did not expect this, I know for a fact some backers of this game would rather there were no romances at all. You argue that they should have popular romance options to get people to keep backing their games and that this is some expectation from backers but again this very game disproves this. Deadfire was successfully funded off the back of the last game which had no romance options. Yet it was successful and many backers were compelled to back the sequel and people like me who didn't back the last game backed this one based on enjoyment of the last. Really what the consumers of this game for the most part expect is the resurrection of an older genre of video games and a nostalgia trip. Romance is a nice bonus for some.

Pledged at the "elite collectors edition" and added the dlc season pass to my pledge. I redeemed that before the game came out and it's listed as dlc I own on steam so that's all fine but a second option to redeem a key has shown up in my products. (idk if it works as I haven't tried it) Did this come with my pledge and I have just bought it again by accident? (if so i'll just give it away no need for a refund)

A thick american accent in a crpg can be jarring for me at first because I am used to that genre using European accents especially British. After a while i got used to it though and it is being done more now anyway. The one issue I have with Pillars is that I can't tell where anyone is from based on their accents. Other than Valians I guess, sort of.

Steam added the explorer's pack dlc to my game on release. The rest of the stuff like the wurm, obsidian order cloak and the captain's footlocker stuff was already in my copy of the game I am pretty sure. I definitely have that stuff. Some of it is in the ship inventory if you are missing some things. edit: footlocker stuff/pre-order bonuses are also added as dlc. So you should have the explorer's pack dlc and pre-order bonus dlc listed in the dlc section.

It imports your most recent endgame save so if you played the ending after completing the expansions it all should be accounted for. If you reloaded an old save and didn't play to the end after completing the expansions I am pretty sure it won't add in the white march choices as they won't be in your endgame save. However some of the imported choices are currently bugged anyway. There is an option to create your own end game save in the menu though that is also buggy at the moment.

I've started with a potd wizard, and I'm really tempted to start over with a different class for that reason. I do not have any complaints about the effectiveness of the wizard. It's doing fine. Merely the fun of the wizard. It's maddeningly stifling not being able to pick your own spell combinations, rather than be limited to the few you learn + what the grimoire has picked for you, minus any overlap. It's destroyed one of the primary enjoyments of the class, a tradition going all the way back to pen and paper. Long term thinking is gone too, due to the instant replenishing of spells after each combat, "action" style. Instant gratification central. Don't get me wrong: the Deadfire world looks amazing, the art is unreasonably beautiful, the game is immersive, and the writing, humor, and voice acting are top tier. But oh man am I not happy with wizards. Probably going to restart with a different class and hope for an eventual fix or community mod. There has been plenty of discussion about it. Where I stand is following: The resource management and long term planning/thinking is great. However, you need the overall structure of the game to support that. Difficulty which would force you to use spells. Dungeons from which you can't return and demand from you to manage your resources well. I see the per-encounter system from PoE1 and IE games as an adopted system from tabletops, which never found it place in its computer counterparts. Resting is never limited to you, so mismanaging your resources wastes your time in the worst case. Whatever, strategic value the old system provided was imaginary or result of self imposed limitations by players. None of those are good designs. I would welcome an RPG which would focus on this aspect of gameplay (standalone adventure in White That Wends focuing on survival - go for it Obs!), in an RPG with structure like PoE this per-rest thing was nothing more than annoyance, which in some extreme cases had negative impact on players enjoyment: with rest spamming or barely using spells (me being in the 2nd group). The new system to me seems more consistant and faithful to the rest of the game and design. But as Dude would say: https://youtu.be/pWdd6_ZxX8c I was not to keen on the removal of Vancian casting either but now it seems to be balanced decently enough it really doesn't bother me much other than the game being overall too easy but i imagine that will be patched at some point or something. As the person above me just said you can't really expect wizards to be the only class that maintains access to all spells in a per encounter system. I get just preferring the old system but it isn't really a wizard specific issue it's just simply a result of them losing vancian casting.

Well we all knew some poeple would be upset if either eder or aloth weren't romance options. All over twitter I have seen fangirls (and some guys) debating which one of these two they would romance completely oblivious to the possibility that it may not be possible. A little venting is healthy but let's not get carried away and certainly don't harass the devs. That said is there actually confirmation that Aloth can be romanced with a male character? Asking for a fried.

Haven't experienced enough of them to say but there is no Durance or Grieving mother type character in the party. I think Tekehu is supposed to be annoying (he's special and not shy about expressing how special and tallented he is), Aloth pretty much suggested I didn't recruit him because he found him so annoying. I guess you could say they seem written to be more appealing, like Xoti is obviously written to be endeering. Aloth and Eder are basically the same as they were in the last game and they were the most fan servicy companions by far. Serafen is pretty simmilar to hiravias although friendlier, less agressive and a tad less crude. I have not spent much time with MIaia so I won't comment. This party seems more Bioware-ish than the party in the last game so maybe not as deep as the last game I guess but I wouldn't say they are particularly shallow either, it's also hard to really judge without completing their quests.

Yeah I'm gonna pass on that. I'm just not going to use Aloth or wizards. Such a really bad concept. Now I end up with friendly fire AOE spells that I'd never of picked given the chance being used by Aloth as he's set to auto-attack. If you don't like Aloth's spells you can retrain him, if you don't like his AI you can change it, or turn it off. Not saying you have to use a wizard it's your choice but there are already ways to adress the issues you have with the system in the game.

It was done to make wizards more specialised in POE you can learn every spell by copying it into your grimoire making all other grimoires useless once you had copied any spells you didn't already have. You still get to pick 2-3 spells per power level. Learn the ones you are going to use the most and if you need a specific spell or spells only for a specific situation use a grimoire with that spell/those spells. Wizards are still very powerful.

The prostitute guy was one of his schoolmates in the magic school. That whole convo gave me "Aloth was and is a clueless, babbling nerd" vibe, but that's nothing new. It was funny. Don't ever change, Aloth Honestly, I wasn't expecting Pallegina to have a romance, because she's Josh Sawyer's character and he hates romances. So if she doesn't have one I'm not surprised. Not sure about Eder though. Has anybody finished his quest and found his past lover? Cuz that thing seems to be gnawing at him, even though there was an option to flirt with him. Maybe the quest needs to be finished first to start anything with him? Also, it seems that most of the romances are bi? Tekehu, Xoti, Maia...What the ef But whatever. Oh yeah I could be reaching there for sure and it was a funny convo. There is also a reference to fallout NV in there if u try to talk to the construct in the corner of the room which made me laugh out loud.
