New Kickstarter incoming
nikolokolus replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'll echo what a few other people have said. I worry too that they're going to "play it safe" and do yet another high fantasy, post-apoc, or some other genre title that's been done a thousand times before. I get why they would go for an iteration of a past style or theme versus doing something wholly original, because frankly that's probably where the Kickstarter money is at. But, god what I wouldn't give to see a game developer create something that captures the vibe of "weird fantasy" (think Clark Ashton Smith, Michael Moorc.ock, Lovecraft, Ralph Bakshi's "Wizards", Frank Frezetta, Jack Vance, et. al.). Whatever they have in mind, I just hope it's playing less on the nostalgia strings and goes for something a little more original and unique; that doesn't mean novelty for novelty's sake, but I feel like there still some untrod ground that needs to be explored and I think people would get behind it. -
Volunteer voice actors?

I know the OP is well intentioned, but holy cow this feels like a dumpster fire waiting to happen. -
8 Directional 3D models?
nikolokolus replied to Justinian's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
What do I think of this implementation? I think it's in an alpha state and that we don't know what it's going to look like on release. JE Sawyer mentioned this in a post - perhaps in the last update thread?- 5 replies

New Kickstarter incoming
nikolokolus replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I hope they hold off a little bit so my bank account has a chance to recover. Between the upcoming holiday and Kickstarter taking a mighty chunk out of my discretionary income in the past 4 or 5 months I'm not sure what level I can back if they launch right away. That said, I'm intrigued to hear what they want to pitch. My hope is that they are thinking of something that isn't bog standard fantasy or sci-fi. For instance, I'd love to see a game in a "weird fantasy" setting (Clark Ashton Smith, Weird Tales, Robert Howard's Solomon Kane, etc.for inspiration) or maybe a Darklands sequel (or spiritual successor). Just something that steers away from the D&D tropes and the Tolkien-esque themes. -
I have nothing against console users and I think you made a reasoned and reasonable plea for console support. If the PS4 supports mouse and keyboard then maybe there wouldn't be as many hurdles to overcome with a port, but given the shoestring budget the developers are working with, there's absolutely no way a port could be achieved until after release and then there would have to be evidence that there's enough PS4 gamers interested in a keyboard and mouse driven RPG, else the GUI and control scheme would have to be completely re-worked and who knows how much time and money that would take. My guess. If there's any "console" upcoming that this game might work on, it's the Steam Box, but even that is a tough call.

Can't Complete Order
nikolokolus replied to Plaguesofwrath's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Try emptying your cache and cookies in Chrome, this seemed to resolve a number of issues I was having with the website yesterday. Settings -> Advanced settings -> clear browsing data and select everything from the beginning of time. -
So what's the release date now?
nikolokolus replied to Halsy's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
All it says is "Coming in 2014" at that link. -
I'm all for some extra stretch goals to really polish this thing up. So long as it means paying for extra man hours (i.e. more help) and it doesn't delay its release for another 3 or 4 months as the content gets added. More wilderness to explore (ala BG 1)? Muy bueno More companions and/or companion related quests? Bueno Stretch goal for romances? No bueno.

Kudos for all of the goodies in this update. Glad I was able to up my pledge amount without much of hitch and the gameplay vidya looks really promising too. -
Backer site
nikolokolus replied to argan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
After an autumn of absolutely wallet draining kickstarters, Obsidian can take all the time they want on the backer portal. I want to upgrade my pledge ... just not until after the New Year. -
Update 68 Camp-out thread

...or maybe it's just a bug. It's a feature. -
Temple of Elemental Evil with the vanilla Circle of Eight patch. I never finished it before because of some horrific optimization bugs in the engine that caused the game to slow to a crawl on the computer I used at the time. Much smoother this time around and quite a different experience with my 27" widescreen vs. the 17" CRT I had at the time.

Monster Question
nikolokolus replied to TreverJohansen's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Creatures that were once fantastical and mysterious in folklore and fiction have been rendered banal and mundane through over-use and repeated regurgitation. I applaud any author, game developer or artist who wants to create something new or reinvent a trope. -

Update 68 Camp-out thread
nikolokolus replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
As far as I know Ferret Bedouin snuck out of that project half-way through development and left it for Josh Sawyer and a few other people to try and salvage something playable. Call me a naive' optimist, but between Chris Avellone, George Ziets, Tim Cain and the aforementioned Mr. Sawyer I think the game is in capable hands. -
Update 68 Camp-out thread
nikolokolus replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Right. Because if there's one thing I worry about with an Obsidian made game, it's that there won't be any character interactions. -
Definitely the nuts and bolts of the mechanics, but coming from more of an OSR mentality (OD&D, Swords and Wizardry, DCC RPG, etc.) I don't want to be bogged down with a lot of 3.x or 4th ed. style character planning and min/maxing right from the start, so learning the mechanics should sort of be built-in to progressing through the game and learning by experimentation. As for the lore, It'd be nice to at least have a little bit of history, politics and the basic cultural beats that a character would be likely to know, but I don't want to know anything at all about the story; that should be a complete surprise.

Cosmology of P:E
nikolokolus replied to Mr. Magniloquent's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I think you are confusing D&D on the whole with the Forgotten Realms. Plenty of D&D campaign worlds had very mysterious deities, or were totally unclear about their existence, powers, or motivations. Ravenloft for example. By official, I mean the handy little chart detailing the names and ordering of the planes in the back of the PHB for 1st ed. AD&D. Greyhawk was also pretty much bog standard fantasy and it was definitely the "official" setting for quite some time, Krynn was much the same too.
