How do damage penalties/bonuses work?

To negate half you need double and double is +100%. x * half * double == x. If total bonuses were +111% then, after substracting 100%, what's left is 11%. Thus damage roll is increased by 11%.

Josh deemed Unlaboured Blade "so incredibly powerful across the board that it’s almost impossible to make any content challenging with them in play" based on what? Just on his theory. Wasn't it a bit too little? What about taking practice into consideration as well? And practice, actually, said a different story. Players liked pre-nerf UB the way it was, they were happy it can compete with durgan-refined weapons. But maybe Josh knew that and still decided to deem UB "so incredibly powerful across the board that it’s almost impossible to make any content challenging with them in play"? If something is "so incredibly powerful across the board that it’s almost impossible to make any content challenging with them in play" then shouldn't it be so not only in theory but in practice as well? I'd say it should.

Now they do 25%. Not a huge difference. Besides, if there's a number bloat weaker units are screwed regardless of armor system used. They could also do what they did in FN:V and add consumables with % reduction. Having more consumables worth using in their game would be a bonus. Isn't this what Josh called 'mushy' and what players disliked about PoE1? I mean, players didn't know if their damage is good enough and when to switch weapons.

Even more so in Tyranny, where, coincidentaly, multiplicative bonuses snowball until damage is in hundreds or thousands points per single hit, so one can just as well wear cloth and spam these attacks as fast as possible. As for confused mess, tooltips are indeed sometimes incorrect and anyway do not take into account dual wielding. Furthermore, enemt stats are no longer shown out of combat, which makes it harder to rearm correctly without attack-reload cycle. They just failed in PoE1's system. There was a lvl 7 spell giving same amount of DR as lvl 2 spell. Weapons were getting % increases from enchantment but armors were getting flat. And that's not everything.

Why do Swords and Greatswords have -1 PEN?

Morning Star has same damage as Estoc. Sword has same damage as Spear. In both cases PEN difference is 1 and is caused by PEN penalty that comes with dual damage type.
