I don't think I will ever read either as the story just doesn't interest me. I read Shakespeare's take and I was extremely bored. Everyone talks about the Illiad and the Odyssey, and neither have ever seemed remotely interesting to me.
I haven't seen the movie, but considering that almost no one on the planet saw the movie, everyone seems to mock it. I think we often readily accept what the media tells us about a movie and pass it on as our own opinion far too often.

USC has been up for two years, but they have been down plenty of times before. And while UCLA had a horrid team last year, they did give USC a scare and almost knock them off.

The story couldn't have happened unless you have a premade character. It is hard to tell a specific story without a specific character.
Premade characters = more defined stories.
