New bug When you have Durance and Sagani in party, and finish Sagani's quest, it's possible possible for Durance and Sagani to chat as if the quest wasn't finished. Durance speaks as if she didn't find Persoq yet.

OP: you're still leaning quite heavily to the concept of tanks. Druids can be decent in melee ! Shapeshifting early on, then you have the spell Taste of the Hunt and multiple cones. I can have around 17 Piercing and Slashing DR (most common ones) in exceptional proofed leather armor. In hindsight I would take specialization Soldier, this would let me use Firebrand spell, which is a Great Sword with Damaging 2 and Annihilation. People are too stuck in the "caster can't fight" mindset. I like PoE because it's back to roots - remember, even Gandalf fought with a sword.

Luck runs away. Skill doesn't. You've said it yourself: You were lucky to land Petrify at the very start. The dragon has incredible saving throws, so counting on few big spells is basically counting on reloading. Try to beat the dragon a few times in a row, I can easily do 3 or more. If you can't pull it off, you just lucked your way through.

I can now consistently beat the Adra Dragon on Normal with my party: PC (Druid), Eder, Durance, Kana, Sagani, Hiravius. And by "consistently" I mean: at least 3 times in a row. This is my first party, it's suboptimal, and far from minmaxed. The best strategy goes as follows: 1. Eder wears heavy armor and large shield. (In my case his talents are not very defensive: Vigorous Defense, Armored Grace, Snake Reflexes, Adventurer, Interrupting Blows, Bloody Slaughter. He wears Shod in Faith, boots which grant Consecrated Ground when damaged. He wears an armor granting Second Chance (the heavy one from Endless Paths, or another heavy with the green Second Chance ring) 2. Eder goes along the bottom edge of the area. This way, not only he faces the dragon alone at first (so party is not damaged by Wing Beat and Breath), but he makes the dragon face away from the party. Subsequent breaths won't hit my party. 3. Once combat starts, use Vigorous Defense. Then, if his health is still above 75%, drink the potion granting +25 fortitude +20 reflex. If wounded below 75%, drink a potion of Major Endurance. 5 potions are enough for the entire battle and there will be some left. The rest of the party doesn't try to help or buff Eder. It's not worth the danger and he can handle it. Even if he goes down, Second Chance will help and the dragon will be out of breath for quite a while. Either way he will buy a lot of time. Everyone else wears medium or light armor. Meanwhile the rest of the party uses some buffs and approaches the dragon from the other side: * Durance casts Prayer Against Fear to counter the -20 penalty of Terrified. Then casts Champion's Boon on Sagani (+10 Might, +10 Perception, 5 DR penetration). Then he stays far from danger, picking stray xaurips etc and casting any buffs you fancy. * Kana uses Scroll of Valor, preceded by Scroll of Untamed Wild so that everyone's potions last longer. * Sagani drinks Potion of Deletrious Something (1.5x attack speed) and shoots either the dragon or some minor monsters, if available. Save the fox for minions, keep away from dragon. * Both druids cast Returning Storm. Then they position themselves just close enough to keep zapping the dragon, but wait a few seconds until dragon uses area attacks on Eder. Once everyone joins the battle, * Kana takes uses a stack of 5 scrolls of maelstrom on the dragon. Taking out some monsters first may be better, especially if they're summoners. This has a chance of benefiting from a debuff on the dragon. Kana's main objective is to keep casting Urdel and Gurdel next to dragon. Maelstrom in the remaining time. * Druids cast the following spells on the dragon, in no particular order: Blizzard, Solar Ray, Nature's Mark (rarely works). If xaurips show up around the dragon, also try Hailstorm, Insect Swarm. Almost all listed spells attack Reflex, the weakest defense of the dragon, and preferably cold. Try to alternate spells, because many of these attacks also debuff. I tried casting the maw spell (piercing damage + prone) but couldn't hit reliably, so I mostly avoid it. When Returning Storm ends, recast it. It does a great job interrupting and damaging the dragon. It's not ideal on minions, so if there are several around you cast Relentless Storm instead. Hailstorm is not so great without minions because it's instant, something that hampers the dragon for a while is good. Sometimes accident happen and someone gets knocked out. But Kana carries a scroll of revival, and Durance can revive. My Kana also has the revive invocation. You also have the sacrificial fox. In dire circumstances it can try to knock the dragon out. Why both large shield and heavy armor on Eder ? Isn't heavy armor a waste on breath and wing beat ? It is. But the dragon also hits in melee for 60, and shaving 20 from that is good. Also, watch out for falling pillars.

As a general choice they might not be viable, but for a class that has lots of activated powers - like Monk - it can be good to make sure you don't miss. It also depends on special artifacts which trigger on crit. I think the accuracy bonus from using a 1-handed weapon without shield is a little silly. I mean, it would make more sense if it increased action speed instead. You have one free hand ! Hands are good at manipulating items! A person wielding two weapons, or one huge weapon will have harder time reaching for a potion, scroll, or making gestures to cast a spell.

Ranger tanks a bit better. You can teach your pet Knockdown. Wounding Arrows slow nasty enemies so you can use Divide and Conquer tactic. Just don't go with Hunting Bow or any other fast weapon unless you really know what you're doing (for example Stunning Arrows don't depend on damage, just accuracy, so fast weapon is good).

Without Sagani and her fox I think you'll need another line holder. Otherwise you can easily become overwhelmed. Kana does this well if you dress him in heavy armor. Pair that with a 2-hander. His abilities will be barely affected, phrases are pretty much passive and invocations are once in a while. Shoot aquebus before going into melee. You'll be especially sorry if something charms or confuses Eder. Note that Hiravias is a Hearth Orlan, and he gets +10% criticals if attacking an enemy already fought by an ally. He can do so more safely if he's wielding a reaching weapon - such as staff or pike. In my game he already had Peasant specialization, so staves. Check character sheet. Unless your Eder has many defensive talents, put a 2-handed weapon or a small shield in the other weapon set. If something goes wrong and Eder doesn't draw as much attention as you want, hit him really hard. In general a good tactic is to switch to shield if enemies are focusing on you, and the rest of your party doesn't use shields for high damage. Durance can take a talent granting +10 sword and arquebus accuracy. You need to satisfy Magran, though - she likes Aggressive and Clever behavior, dislikes Deceptive and Passionate. Once you get the talent it doesn't matter. Another good phrase to chant for Kana is the one that frightens. It works very often, and enemies get -10 to Accuracy. Note that phrases in a chant can overlap.

Kith is quite obviously the most common, it even costs twice as much anvils. ---------------------------------------------------- One thing you may want to consider is what weapon type slays what kinds of monsters. For example, it's quite silly to enchant a bow with spirit slaying. Spirits will be all over you within seconds. A sword will be much better, and you don't necessarily need a shield unless you're a pathetic weak mage. My Durance wields Whispers of Yenwood + small shield. Beasts include nasty spiders, including crystal ones, drakes and dragons. Many characters will want to fight them from afar, but animals are not so scary for characters in medium armor (+ shields possibly if they focus on you). Many beasts are big, so tanks in front + reaching beast slaying weapons behind are good. I don't know what exactly is 'wilders', but Ogres and Trolls belong here. They are not very dangerous unless you lack artillery spells, and quite rare. Are vithrack wilders ? Even rarer. Primordials - probably blights ? Blights are very vulnerable to ranged attacks, because they're slow, and Sagani can use wounding arrow on the biggest ones. I wouldn't bother. Sagani already has Primordial + Animal slaying because she's a Boreal Dwarf. +15 accuracy. Vessels - these tend to be fast runners, and many fights are in the open, so unless you have exceptional ability to engage I'd use melee weapons. Revenants I don't think are very fast, but they're weak and not worth bothering. Kith - they're quite fast as a rule, but also rather fragile so with an arbalest or a firearm you can use slaying to kill some before melee is joined. Not too hard to engage. When in doubt, carry a pair of slaying weapons. This gives you good coverage. Sometimes the best answer to "which slaying?" is "None". If you use slaying, you may be unable to fit a quality enchantment (exceptional, superb in very late game). Secondary elemental damage is more consistent and cheap.

Ranger at least has a ton of abilities to choose. I think it's the Hunting Bow and Dual Wield rangers that need help the most. Contrary to tooltip, Marked Prey is not +20 damage, but +20% damage. I think Stunning Arrows is the only talent that benefits from fast attacks. It doesn't depend on your low damage with Hunting Bow, just accuracy. You can also take Interrupting Blows, but so can everybody else.

Sacrificial Lamb Use a ranger's pet to block the doorway. Even when it's knocked out it still blocks ! Works great against big monsters. Monsters should automatically do trampling damage to fallen party members, and for pets it could be maiming. It should be your worry to not place bodies in their path, not opportunity.

Patch Notes: 1.04
b0rsuk commented on Darren Monahan's blog entry in Pillars of Eternity Support Blog
Boots of Speed are buggy. After combat ends, the character wearing them is back to normal speed. They don't work at all. They start working when I re-equip them. -
Several items and talents mention they trigger at low endurance. How low is low endurance ? For example: Blooded (Barbarian) Bloody Slaughter (offensive talent) Finishing Blow (Rogue skill) Does it vary from talent to talent, or they all work on less than 50% endurance, for instance ? Mantle of the Dying Boar is mentioned in 1.04 patch notes as triggering on 33% endurance.

Patch Notes: 1.04
b0rsuk commented on Darren Monahan's blog entry in Pillars of Eternity Support Blog
While we're at Sagani spoiling things, in 1.00, when I approached the Lighthouse, she said something along the lines: "Why would the woman want to live in a place like that", referring to the quest and the plans to build an inn there. The problem is, I haven't talked to the NPC yet ! I suppose you could reproduce it like this: 1. Approach the Lighthouse with Sagani in party. 2. Hear her commenting on the Lighthouse 3. Approach the woman (Naia?) and talk to her for the first time. -
issues i get after the new patch 1.03
b0rsuk replied to hero1900's question in Pillars of Eternity: Technical Support (Spoiler Warning!)
I'm reposting this from the 1.03 patch thread, because people are chat flooding it with limerick and sexuality arguments. Linux version from GOG, I patched by downloading the new version, renaming old Pillars of Eternity directory to something else, unpacking the new version, and running ./start.sh in the new directory. I didn't move any savegames manually. BUG in 1.03: Hearth Harvest, an unique hatchet found on a corpse on west edge of Wooden Plains, looks quite silly. Normally, weapon images in inventory are small and become enlarged when you click on them (pick them up to place in another inventory slot). After loading my game in 1.03, Hearth Harvest is enlarged ALL THE TME. It looks exactly the same when you're transferring it to another slot as when it's lying somewhere in your inventory. BUGS still in 1.03: Item descriptions still have lines which read like this: Light Armo Heavy Armo 'r' is missing on the end. My system (from /etc/issue): Debian GNU/Linux 8
