SLOWED RECOVERY WHILE MOVING - NO THANKS
Shdy314 replied to Sensuki's topic in Backer Beta Discussion
Maybe if you spent more time fighting in virtual environments you'd know what you were talking about. PoE is not based on a pnp system though it certainly has a few DnD touchstones. For example engagement is just attacks of opportunity in 3rd edition DnD and it is also impossible to take a move action and full attack(usually) in 3rd edition. Sound familiar? -

@Sensuki Erragal just wanted us to know how awesome he is because he knows all about "real" fighting. It wasn't anything but a humble brag. -

That's an interesting assertion mrmonocle. Which dev told you that? Im wondering if its simply a miscommunication. Did someone think they were fixing a bug putting it back in? Who knows? None of us unless a dev decides to chime in. -
Thank you for the answer. I wasn't planning on using melee on a cipher. Just idly wondering if the blunderbuss' projectiles offered an interesting synergy with a talent.
-
Thanks for the non-answer? If I wanted to just use guns I'd play a rogue. If I did play a cipher Im going to use mind powers. So do you know if a blunderbus could conceivably get you +2 focus for each projectile? EDIT: Sincere thank you to ushas.

The length of time it takes people to find something really doesn't matter at all. If I was stealing money from you for years but it was such a small amount it took you all that time before you realized does that mean anything at all? Of course not. There's a lot of godawful arguments going on in here and ad hominems. This "I didn't notice it argument" is not a reason to keep it. If anything it is a reason to get rid of it. It's not doing anything except slightly screwing players in a way they may not even notice.... Great mechanic? -
People love to have the discussion that's taking place in their head rather than the one actually occuring. The complaint was about the pickpocketing SKILL being removed. We have no idea if PoE will contain any pickpocketing options in the game. If they don't then we can bemoan the lost opportunity.

While I know you didn't read my post after that one.

Yes people reacting in haste with "it's an RPG" is part of the distraction but even more importantly it also turns it into the millionth argument about engagement rather than focusing on what is really a separate issue. -
I wonder does Draining Whip's +2 focus per hit get applied before or after the rounding? If it's after it seems like that'd make the blunderbuss pretty great for a cipher.

I wish you hadn't put in your argument that you want it to play more like an RTS. That really becomes a distraction to the fact you aren't wrong about this. Whether you hate or like engagement it's a simple concept. If enemies engage you in melee and you want to run away from them you are going to eat an attack. It's an attack of opportunity and most of us know 3E DnD so whatever. If the goal is to make movement on the battlefield dangerous then whatever it "makes sense." People can argue whether that's a stupid goal or not. What is objectively awful is to punish movement in TWO ways. Obsidian can make your actions take longer because youre moving or they can make you risks attacks for moving around but doing both is terrible. -
If the game is gold....

I bought VtM:B in stores and tried to play it at launch. Did the same thing with Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor. One of these games had a total showstopper bug at launch; it was literally impossible to go past a certain point if you hit this bug. The other one had an uninstall bug that would wipe your entire Windows partition. Skyrim really wasn't that bad. Anecdotes are fun. I bought VTMB at launch and finished it in two days no problem. Skyrim was a way bigger mess but I dont fault Bethesda too much. It's going to happen when youve got a sandbox that big. The important thing is being able to get through the crit path with minimal issues for the majority of players. We will have to wait and see the reviews to know how well POE fares. On topic: Yes I agree with the over entitled OP whom I hate for making me use the word entitled. Obsidian owes us the game asap for not perfectly estimating the release date years ago like every other developer easily does. -
If there were a playable spider species I would love to see that. Then there would have to be a male spider companion terrified of sex. "PC-Name I don't mean to alarm you but I believe that woman over there wishes to copulate with you! Yes the flaxen haired one. Yes I suppose her upper abdomen is large. Oh gods she's approaching!"

Is time a factor in the game?
Shdy314 replied to Kordanor's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
This is something Ive been curious about but didn't want to get spoiled about. It seems a little weird how closely the game appears to be tracking time (down to the hour). People at your stronghold don't leave on the third day they leave 72 hours from when they show up, You can only have one upgrade being built at a time (I think) etc. And Obsidian did have the whole spirit eating mechanic before in MoB where time became a factor. Im not really expecting it but I wont be surprised if time does have a role to play in the story. -
Thanks for bringing up the exploit of Algernon's cloak to prove my point about how people only cared to the extent they used it to get crazy crap off NPCs. And then the PS:T quest based uses which PoE can still have as I have pointed out multiple times now. You don't need a pickpocket skill to have opportunities to steal in the game. That's what is perhaps getting lost in the knee jerk reactions. Like in PS:T you didn't need a break necks skill to kill some Dustmen. If it turns out there will be no opportunities via quests/dialogues etc. for larceny then that is a valid complaint I can get behind. Core: a basic, essential or enduring part (as of an individual, a class or an entity) Now you're probably going to say it was a basic part of the rogue class and that is fair enough but I never said it wasn't a big part of the rogue shtick. I said as a whole free, roam pickpocketing was not an essential part of the IE games.

There are a number of talents that are... situational at best.

As others have mentioned sexual dimorphism in animals doesn't always mean males are the largest. Thus this is actually quite awesome and OP needs to pause and think before posting.

Review Watch?
Shdy314 replied to Fenwick's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Makes sense. PoE is enormous and you don't want reviewers rushing through 1/3 of it in a day then posting their review to be first for desperate page views. An embargo around the 23rd gives every reviewer a fair chance to get through and post about it at the same time as everyone else. -
Good thing I never said it can't be done or shouldn't be included. It is included in PoE as far as we know. It would absolutely have a major role to play in say a Thief game where a free form pickpocketing skill would be worth the effort and not so out of place. But the idea it was a big part of the IE games is ridiculous. It's a skill with a lot of creative uses in PnP but in a CRPG it amounts to a player spamming the skill on everyone and reloading if it causes a fight. You can get creative uses out of it by good designers including the option when appropriate in dialogues. As PoE supposedly does. We'll have to wait for release to see how well. I mentioned the exploitative power of pickpocketing in IE but that was it's problem. Use it in a stupidly powerful way (Like planting explosives on everyone in Fallout) or don't really use it at all. Or grabbing stuff off NPCs before they walked off. Like Drizzt. You could nick some notable stuff but it was pretty much all exploits. D:OS? The game where pick pocketing and stealing in general ruins the economy even more than RPG players usually ruin the economy? Anyways it's all just quibbling. Whether too powerful or not useful enough we seem to both agree it's usage was not a core part of the IE experience. Not even for rogues. The vast majority of people talk about stealthy rogues disabling traps and backstabbing enemies to instant death. I suppose you could argue it was a bigger part for bards. It was their only thief skill.

As far as I can tell Stealth doesn't take into account light levels, facing or anything like that. So my headcanon is it's some sort of magic. A sort of soul power people can learn that quiets their steps and cloaks them etc. Like a weaker version of shadowing beyond. Rogues having learned an even more powerful technique.
