  1. Which was alive and well in all the IE games except the Dales. So they are just being true to their spiritual predecessor! Haven't you heard? Everything the IE games did was brilliant and perfect and should be copied. Especially killxp. But this too. Though it is not as important as killxp. No but seriously there was definite favouritism and rule breaking among the NPCs in IE games. So someone will probably want to defend it, I actually agree with you and I hope they play by the same rules. I also hope every NPC is a blank slate I can level up from 0 including attributes but I probably wont get that wish.
  2. Oh yeah uh good. Cause Im not. Totally. You are very very bad man - who would dare abuse a hamster! I did know a guy named Minsc. I think he put his hamster through an awful lot... Was it abusive? I was never sure. I didn't speak miniature giant space hamster. Does squeak mean help me!?
  3. Oh yeah uh good. Cause Im not. Totally.
  4. Hey look. Mrak is the fourth person now to make the same intellectually bankrupt argument! Congrats Hamster. Yeah, I'm just hamster after all, I couldn't be compared to those PoE-fanboy elitists that will defend any idea from Obsidian, regardless of its quality. Are you implying moi is a fanboi? Damn. How did you figure it out? It was because I disagreed with you wasn't it? I knew that would make it too obvious. Only a retarded blind and deaf fool would argue against the genius that is Hamster. Of course you have found me out. Everything in PoE is awful. I just love corporations. The way they shield individuals from legal liability. They are people too! The supreme court said so and people just need to be loved! Of course you are a dirty killxp fanboi. So I guess we both suck and deserve each other.
  5. People rolled all day for that in every IE game that allowed it too! HA! No but seriously they did. So it is a spiritual successor!
  6. Hey look. Mrak is the fourth person now to make the same intellectually bankrupt argument! Congrats Hamster.
  7. That the kill xp wasn't a failure. It did what it was supposed to do. The point of the mechanic was to help the player level up; it did that, and did so without causing the game to fail. What is this I don't even... So you were never even trying to argue killxp is good. Just that it won't tank sales? Oooooook. If you seriously thought by failure I meant that it tanked sales or that it didn't level people up then you are hopeless.
  8. I know you aren't the first to use this term but I just have to mention this has to be my favorite new bs term. I am glad business doesn't have a monopoly on this junk. As if I wasn't incentivized in other RPGs to do every available quest. No I don't want massive XP and kewl loot game. Silence all that stupid dialogue and attempts to tell me a story. I grind for my power! Ah yeah feel all that freedom from the tyranny of quests! The worst thing to ever be introduced to an RPG. No more bowing and scraping to stupid NPCs. Now I murder them for their XP like a truly free psychopath.
  9. Oh yes the old "choices are inherently good so more choices is always better" chestnut. As wrong now as ever. It is interesting that you should make this argument since that is EXACTLY what the system produces. You get xp no matter what path you take to your goals. Oh but you don't get to see numbers immediately after killing something. I guess it is totally different. You can keep saying that all you want but you know it won't change. Which has literally nothing to do with killxp.
  10. You are too funny. You have no idea what correlation is do you? Actually I do. However there is no correlation here. Tell me, if I said there would be chairs in poe would that be something to get excited about. For most people; I doubt it. That wouldn't mean chairs are a failure. I agree! There is no correlation between the popularity of BG and killxp. So what was your original argument supposed to be again?
  11. Now this I must agree with you. All of it. Only game I ever started and didn't feel OCD enough to finish.
  12. RTwP is a given? I bet you had strong opinions about the new Torment eh?
  13. I never said they were a major draw. I said they weren't a failure. They clearly didn't ruin the IE game's success; thus they aren't a failed mechanic. You are too funny. You have no idea what correlation is do you?
  14. WOW. That is ... <makes diplomacy check> bold.
  15. LOL this is such a vague, meaningless statement. YEP! So is saying it was a tried and tested success. Good job figuring that out Stun. You get me. In this alternate universe was the game still designed with killxp in mind? So it was exactly the same except no killxp? Or was it designed differently to account for the change? Because BG's were not exactly stellar at giving you charisma and stealth options in quests so it would end up being a wash. Anyways in all honestly I still woulda bought it because if it was an RPG back then I snatched it up no questions asked. I was not always the most discerning consumer.
  16. Except - and I know this is totally selfish - I'm trying to have a conversation with Helm and understand his stance on why he feels the riskiness of combat should yield an appropriately greater reward, and having to skim through three pages of toxic bile between posts is something I could do without, thank you very much. This is what PMs are for. Ive used them to great effect for speaking to a single individual. I could argue that "telling off others for asking nicely to refrain from behaving like an asshat" is also a strong contender, but I'm trying to avoid sounding snarky. (And desperately failing at it. Still, I've tried.) You could argue that but youd be wrong. Also such vulgar language is against forum rules. You have been reported. Based on my experience with internet discussions, that's usually not "a point to be reached", but the starting assumption. That doesn't change the fact that people try to discuss said viewpoints. Find better discussions. Also, Indira was firmly anti-kill xp until he fired up the beta, so the "everyone is entrenched in their viewpoints" stance doesn't exactly hold water. By Indira's own admission he was NOT. He claimed to be on the fence. ...but I have doubts about that. If that is so then go read the thread he posted it in. I didn't quote out of context. This is simply an emotional tradition based argument repeated ad infinitum for years here. Indira simply admitted he is married to particular conventions in his RPGs. It is what he knows/likes/prefers and is comfortably familiar with. I can respect that while still disagreeing.
  17. I might feel a bit misled since that was an actual promise made during the kickstarter which killxp was not and these arguments only show that not everyone felt the killxp was as intrinisic to the experience as the freaking viewpoint which is used to define entire genres (FPS, TPS). But I would move on once I realized I could not change Obsidian's mind. You're argument is disingenous. All those games used a DnD ruleset as well but we knew that wasn't going to be happening. They didn't ask if we miseed all those old isometric rpgs WITH KILL XP. I know it is about tradition. It has always been about tradition. That is what is so annoying about all these "arguments" people keep making where they struggle to assign logic to their emotions. I know games based on DnD had kill xp. PoE is not based on DnD rules so it does not. I honestly hope you still end up enjoying it or find a nice killxp mod very soon after release.
  18. You may think that other systems could be better, and you may be right - it's certainly a valid opinion anyway. But that statement is completely, objectively, laughably, indefensibly ridiculous. Great. I cannot wait for you to effortlessly (because it is indefensible) prove me completely and laughably wrong. Objectively. It's clear you have no intention but posting inflammatory nonsense just to offend people, I probably shouldn't even bother feeding the troll (it should go without saying, I've added you to my ignore list), but I'd invite you to take a look lists like these: http://www.gog.com/mix/must_play_classic_crpgs http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/rpg-codexs-top-50-crpgs-results-and-reviews.89680/ http://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=727 http://uk.ign.com/top/rpgs Or these, where you will then need to ignore the many games that are not RPGs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_video_games http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_PC_games And count up the number of those games that award XP for killing creatures. Now, are you seriously trying to claim that all of those games are failures? See this just proves how bankrupt the kill xp camps arguments are. 3 people formed an argument at the same time. All 3 said "I liked BG and it had kill xp so kill xp is good!" And they honestly believe this is an objective and incontrovertible proof! Hilarious. Look at Waywrocket! I am sure he honestly believes I said BG was a failure and that he has gotten into an argument to prove BG is popular. Which is of course sadly mistaken. Of course you think I am a troll Waywrocket. I am sure what you have imagined me saying is very trollish.
  19. .........Um that is it? Here let me use your hilarious argument on you and see if that helps you. Modern Warfare 2 is even more successful and even more well received. Therefore we should totally use the XP mechanics of MW2! This is objectively true guys! You are pointing out a correlation rather than causation. You are also using popularity to argue quality. These are major flaws. Thats sad. You just copied Namutree. You're a plagiarist. Also wrong for the same reasons. You provide literally zero evidence that the xp system is the reason for the IE games continued popularity. You simply claim it is because reasons. As for the systems still being played in PnP uh no sorry 2nd edition 3rd and 3.5 are no longer top of the market and 4th never was and 5th will be shown to be as awful as ever when the DMG comes out. Newer systems have almost universally abandoned killxp even combat heavy games like WH40K Deathwatch! Seriously look up the Deathwatch in WH40K to realize how crazy that is! Their dominance was solely due to brand awareness and being first to market not the horrendous quality of their systems which have been torn down mathematically about a thousand times on rpg boards over the decades. Even when I did play DnD we never gave out xp right after the combat based on what monsters we had killed because even as dumb teens that was too ridiculous even for us. Its sad because kill xp and other mechanics are designed to activate the reward centers of the brain and so you could have made an actual objective argument that the xp system was crucial to the success because it was like candy or drugs for the players. But no you went with popularity.
  20. This probably (because it shouldn't) doesn't mean anything to you but I want you to know I respect you for this. I hope you inspire others to also set themselves free.
  21. You may think that other systems could be better, and you may be right - it's certainly a valid opinion anyway. But that statement is completely, objectively, laughably, indefensibly ridiculous. Great. I cannot wait for you to effortlessly (because it is indefensible) prove me completely and laughably wrong. 22. There is nothing to participate in. You are laboring under a false impression. I explained this. Stop playing mod. That is the only thing worse than playing grammar nazi. There is NO reasonable discussion to facilitate here. I explained this. We understand each others points. We have reached the point everyone is firmly entrenched in their viewpoints. The ghost of Gygax could appear to argue against (or for) kill-xp and it would not change anyone's mind. Kill-xp fans have said multiple times they do not think Obsidian will change it. They know they are wasting everyone's time. They do not care. Because this is not about having a real discussion on design. I am completely serious and so was Indira. The dopamine fix in games is very real. Combine that with nostalgia and you have a recipe for some hardcore emotional attachment. Go ahead and get OT. This thread is going nowhere. It is a giant cycle of sadness and future regret on our deathbed for the time that was wasted
  23. Hi! Welcome to the forums. It will be the most amazing place you will ever visit in your entire life! Or it will be utterly forgettable. Anything inbetween is NOT allowed.
  24. Fine tuning the xp will mean doing stuff like toning down wilderness combat (Not all animals must be insanely homicidal!) such as their placement, density and spawning. Which is stuff they will/should do anyways no matter what xp system they go with. So it is obviously less work because it is work they must do anyways in beta. You do not seriously think tweaking their current system will take more time than a whole new one? IE games xp system is a tried and tested failure.
