Backer Beta Information [Not Live Yet]

Recommended Posts

The Backer Beta is not live yet.

The current estimate is 3:00PM PDT, August 18. This is not 100%; I expect that the main priority is to ensure everything is good to go and solid, rather than rushing an hour or two and having things break. Watch this thread for updates.

When it does go live, here is how you access the beta:

You will need to sign in to your backer portal account. If you head to https://eternity.obsidian.net/account and click on the "Products" tab, you will see all of the products you are eligible for. If you are eligible for the backer beta you will see a backer beta entry (Note: You won't see this until we push everything live. Don't freak out if it isn't currently there). If you click on that entry, you will see a button to generate a Steam key for the beta. Clicking on the button will generate a key for you and give you instructions in how to access the beta on Steam.

The beta will be Steam only to take advantage of Steam's updating system during this phase. The beta key is not the key for your final copy.

You know, alternatively OE could just slip me my key and I could help them out with the whole validation thing!

What's that? Not in a thousand ye... No, really?

Waaaaaah!! Guess I better do some work then. :(

Q: How do I apply the key to Steam?
A: (I looked it up)
- Press the "Games" tab (next to "Help")
- Pick "Activate a Product on Steam"
- Write in your code

Q: What happens if a key does not work or says it already is in use? (let's say the random generation creates the same code for 2 people by a freak chance due to overload, and the key generation is expended. What do I do if I generate a code, it does not work, and I can't generate another code?

If you happen to get a key that doesn't work, just send in a support ticket. We will more than likely be overloaded with support tickets, but we will get to them as fast as we can.

Just wondering, but what do you game devs/community moderators/support specialists do to prepare physical and emotionally for "lauch day" of any significant description?

I hear they watch The Leftovers episodes over and over. It the only way to get their spirits low enough for the pain and suffering that is sure to come.

Firstly a big congrats to Obsidian on getting the beta out!  :D

Secondly, and pardon my ignorance here, but how do you obtain your beta key?  Its not showing under my 'products' tab.  Is this only for backers at a higher level than my (admittedly) base level of backing?

In any case, if I am entitled to a beta key, it'll be a day or two before I can d/l it, so hopefully the servers will have had time to recover!

I haven't been following the development closely, but I'm slightly surprised about the contents of the beta - was this a plan all along (to have the beta be a tech/system demo unrelated to the actual game) or did it change at some point?

There are no doors in Jefferson that are "special game locked" doors. There are no characters in that game that you can kill that will result in the game ending prematurely.

Well, yeah, but if I understood the announcement correctly, it has no companions from the game, no quests from the game (or at least the main storyline), and is extremely limited in scope. In my mind, "beta" means something that's close to the finished product and needs to be playtested and debugged, whereas this is a much different animal.

I'm not complaining, just curious.

It's more of a beta demo, since the scope is closer to what you would expect from a demo. I was disappointed by this, but have made my peace with it.
