I just wish they hadn't chosen to go with 2D backgrounds. It looks so dead! The characters are smooth and beautifully animated, but then they run through a forest and grass and nothing's moving. It's like seeing live action actors imposed on a cartoon background.

Nice.  I watched as far as character creation, then as soon as the game proper began I turned it off immediately.  I definitely liked what I saw out of character creation, though.

That's interesting, you also don't want to ruin the surprise....but it was hard to stop watching?

Yes, it was indeed hard to stop watching.

I don't think it really gives much away, they create a character, have about two combat sequences, show off some of the graphics in general and dialogue. While Josh and two guys talk around stuff, wander  into commentary about Icewind Dale 2 adventuring companies, commentary about kickstarter, and other bits and pieces.

You're probably right, but I'm taking no chances.  I don't want anything at all spoiled for me, not even minor details at the very beginning of the game.  I want to see everything for the very first time when I play it once it's fully released.

I avoided watching this video, it was hard as I started it and heard the initial 1 minute of conversation. But I avoided it, has anyone else made a conscious decision to try to not watch any gameplay videos so your first play through is a complete surprise on every level ?

I have watched character creation, first combat and then I switched to another tab on my browser and just listened to Josh's talk

I'm kind of pissed they always pick the same character at all their presentations: always a human barbarian. I wanted to get a glimpse of all races at least! :(

Same here.  I was internally screaming "For the love of Gods, at least quickly click on all the different races before you commit to one!"

Looked really REALLY good, but the run animation still looks a bit funny to me ;)

And fresh from ComicCon announcement and such..

io9 - Keep Flying - Firefly Online

Browncoats rejoice! Joss Whedon's space Western Firefly may never return to television, but the 'verse goes on. And soon, you'll be able to have a ship and crew of your own, when Firefly Online launches for the PC and Mac. We've got an exclusive first look at the ships, the guns, the characters and more.

In case you missed the game's launch video at SDCC, you can view that here. Firefly Online is the creation of Quantum Mechanix, whose Firefly merchandise and other goodies we've featured many times before, along with Spark Plug Games.

According to QMX's Andy Gore, everyone agreed a Firefly game was a great idea, but QMX had to prove it was the right company to do it. There were two criteria: 1) The company had to love Firefly and its fans, which clearly wasn't an issue. 2) The company had to have strong development chops — because this had to be a great game in its own right, regardless of the Firefly connection.

Firefly Online's "Free Flight Engine" will give you a reactive 3D user interface, that includes whizzy "in-universe guides" around planets that the player can interact with, according to Gore. "If you could imagine the map of the verse (complete with the nebula gases), in 3D, with all the planet renders that you can zoom in, zoom out and fly through. It looks utterly amazing"

Here's a snapshot of the game's "Free Flight Engine" in action, as it's currently being developed:

Joss Whedon is aware of the development of Firefly Online, but he's been "a bit busy with a little thing called The Avengers," says Gore, and thus hasn't been personally involved. "I think that's part of why it was important to the studio that the developer be someone with a proven track record making successful products for Firefly. No one wants to disappoint Joss."

And there's a chunk of other little details and art shots and such-like there...

Same. Or maybe I'm just too used to the infinity engine low frame animations at 30fps, movement looks almost too smooth in PoE. Wasn't sure how I would feel about those text screens that descripe what is happening at first, but they seem to work just fine. Have to say the world seems really interesting to me.

Edit: Not sure has this been posted somewhere already, but here is an RPS interview with Josh Sawyer about PoE and other stuff. Next part should be released today.
