A diary of an executioner working in Bremen (or mayve Magdeburg) in the late 14th century.. With his thoughts on death, life, the times he's in etc. Looked very interesting. As I have some travel time I'm curently reading a book, from 1955 I found in an old bookshop (owned by the old friend) written by a doctor, about the cultural history of eroticism.. That sounds like an interesting read, you should have bought the book right away. Contrary to popular belief able executioners at that time were highly regarded professionals, sometimes they were so popular they offered their service to nobles and even kings on an international level. Its not just an ordinary book but the diary of Peter Hagendorf, a mercenary who participated in the thirty year war, 1618-1648. In the book he describes the battles, his injuries (he was hit two times in the chest by matchlock musket bullets!), the horribly long marches across Germany (at the end of the war he had covered 20.000 Kilometers by foot), soldiers marauding cities, famine, even some details about his personal life like his wifes illness and the death of his children. And all that in beautiful old German (which is kind of hard to read sometimes, I have to admit) That book does look good, I have 2 types of favourite personal reading books. Fantasy books and anecdotal historical accounts of people in military conflicts. I've mentioned this before but World War One is the conflict that I am most fascinated with and I collect as many books around that war as I can, the problem is I have many excellent autobiographies written by the likes of Robert Graves and Sigfried Sassoon but very few books that represent the German side of the war and life in the trenches. Almost all the German perspectives of the war are written in German so purchasing them wouldn't help as I can't read or speak German Then I can wholeheartedly recommend you the book ''in Stahlgewittern'' (Storm of steel), the enthralling diary of Ernst Jünger, a (slightly fanatic) German troop officer in WWI ( ISBN 0-86527-310-3) - yes, there exists a translated version of this book, I think Amazon international sells them. One hell of an exciting book, he served in WWI from the beginning to its very end. Bruce, whats your second language? There exists tons of good German literature so its definitely a language worth learning. I'm a lucky bastard and can read manuscripts and books written by both sides of the conflict. Anyway, she did a little redecorating while I was gone! I guess it was a little sparse on decorations around here. I don't have much of an aesthetic sense. It does look a lot better. I also noticed there is a lot of her stuff in my closet & bathroom that I don't think she will be taking home. Funny how that works isn't it? Now I'm wondering if her staying here was really my idea or she maneuvered me into suggesting it. I hate the type of light that comes from flourecent lightbulbs, not to mention that they take forever to light up. And I don't save any money from them during the wintertimes, since I have eletrical heating in my house.There are some that are within the warmer (more yellowish) range of the color spectrum and turn on quicker, now, but it's still not quite the same as incandescent bulbs. The one thing I do like about them, however, is how long they last. I only have to bug my husband to change the ceiling ones maybe once a year, if that. “Things are as they are.
