mkreku Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 I thought it was an impressive demonstration. Sucks that they didn't show the actual console, but the games definitely looked good. I guess they're saving the box reveal for E3. No big deal. I was very surprised when they announced it has 8 GB GDDR5! Sounds like it'll be an expensive piece of kit. Love the new features, like background downloading, playing games before they're downloaded, sharing gameplay videos (great feature!) etc. A huge step forward from the PS3. Like the look of the new controller too. A bit bulkier than the PS3 version (which is good) and much better analogue sticks and trigger buttons. Also like that they made the move functionality mandatory. Maybe now there will actually be games that use it? All in all a very good show. 1 Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!

AwesomeOcelot Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 So the answer to whether games on the PS4 will require online registration is that it's up to the publisher, but Sony as a publisher has no plans to implement this. That should leave the door open to modding the console to circumvent that.
Mamoulian War Posted February 21, 2013 Posted February 21, 2013 (edited) I did understand from the interview, that Sony is still not willing to talk if they will block their own published games or not, yet... as I see it, I would bet, that they will allow they first party games used if you pay some fee... something like online passes which they used in Uncharted 3, White Knight Chronicles 2 etc etc... Every other publisher will have the choice to block it or not... And I am willing to bet my ass on EA, Ubi and Capcom blocking used games for PS4... Edit: And I think as well, that modding of consoles will be very profitable business this generation... greylord Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 (edited) Given that there is evidence that suggests the used games market actually supports the new games market, I doubt MS/Sony will come out against it in this generation. Not initially at least, I think. But maybe 2-3 years down the road, both Sony/MS could decide to ship a new hardware SKU that comes without optical drive (price cut!), and also announcing btw that retail games won't be produced anymore due to the majority of demographics having fast enough internet. All games will then be bought exclusively in their respective online stores. Doing this at launch would be suicide, but as people get used to the idea they will eventually succumb to the corporate will. They always do. Sony already tried that once this generation (though it WAS advertised somewhat at launch, though the key system did have disc usage and then later they released the download only version). The PSP GO was a disaster. Don't think they'd make the same mistake this closely...but I could be mistaken. From what I was hearing it was that it would play used games...(though of course, as one brought up, it could require reactivation, I don't think it will considering other things they've stated...but I can't rule it out either). (edit: And seems clarified on that subject later in the thread...so...they won't require it, but it's still could be done by publishers). IT WILL NOT be backwards compatible with PS3 games from what I've seen. Maybe the games or some of them will be available via cloud gaming? But backwards compatible with PS3 I heard was not going to happen due to architecture. Maybe it will play PS1 and PS2 games? Edited February 22, 2013 by greylord
Morgoth Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Maybe it will play PS1 and PS2 games? No it won't because Sony is not exactly in good financial shape and they need to cut cost wherever possible. Creating a PS2 emulator and then providing support would not make any business sense for Sony. That's why they'll use Gaikai streaming. They won't make much profits from the hardware itself, so they now need to make money of services and digital. Sooner or later, they're gonna provide PS1/2/3 streaming on PCs, tablets etc too because it creates more revenues. They have to. Money speaks louder than exclusivity. Rain makes everything better.

PS2 has been for the PS3 and currently was a software version. On the otherhand, you're right, streaming could be much more profitable for them. 1

Hurlshort Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 I've never understood the need for your games to last forever. The way technology moves, most of my old crap is simply that, crap. The good stuff tends to be preserved by people and made playable on new devices.
alanschu Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 I remember going "ooo backwards compatibility" too. Until I realized it's uncommon for me to really care. I'm having a blast through the past with a lot of NES and SNES gaming with some guys at work, but if it wasn't available to me I'm sure I would have done something else and still enjoyed my time.
AwesomeOcelot Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 What does everyone think of the now confirmed GDDR5 unified memory? I thought that stuff was extremely expensive. It's way faster than the usual system RAM DDR3. Is their a chance we'll see it migrate to PC system RAM?
Morgoth Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 http://www.d-down.jp/On the upside, at least Capcom is still making man-cave games. Wonder if this is supposed to be a Dark Souls competitor, or just Dragon's Dogma 2? Rain makes everything better.

It's way faster than the usual system RAM DDR3. Is their a chance we'll see it migrate to PC system RAM? Yes, very expensive. And not necessarily the best, but certainly the fastest solution to implement for a company that does not want to provide the R&D money to search for cheaper yet similarly good solutions. MS is supposedly going to use the much cheaper and cooler (thermal) 8GB DDR3 RAM, but is using on-die edram and other manufacturing tricks (3D stacking) to reach similarly high bandwidth results. Aka higher R&D costs, but lower fabrication costs. Hence, MS might have more price flexibility here. Edited February 22, 2013 by Morgoth Rain makes everything better.

Morgoth Posted February 23, 2013 Posted February 23, 2013 Aha, now it's a publisher decision. That's a nice way of saying "Yes we will block used games, but we're just gonna blame publishers for it. Please refer your questions to the respective publishers." Publishers then will lash out and say "No no, it's Sony's policy. There's nothing we can do about it. Please refer your questions to Sony, thank you." You always need two to Tango to deceive the public. Either way, perhaps you will be able to play used copies, but as I said before, it won't come without any kind of penalty (fee to re-activate used copy?). Sony wants to make a profit of that big market, too. They'd be stupid not to do so. Rain makes everything better.
