Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

i have to say, skyrim seems to be the most stable release from bethesda in .... forever? morrowind, oblivion, and fallout 3 all crashed about once every 3-4 hours, while skyrim so far has only crashed once in about 40 hours. thats pretty cool.

So far it's probably the most stable Bethesda game I've played, I do get a repeatable crash in the Ratway under Riften, pretty annoying but other than that I've only had a few random CTD's while out and about in the world.

*edit*

The real test will be after all the patches, DLC and mods :p

I got attacked by a Boethiah worshipper. He dropped a book that marked the Shrine of Boethiah on my map. I suppose this has something to do with Molag Bal's quest.

Also killed my first two dragons. And one dragon priest that popped up right after killing the second dragon.

The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.

More Deadra.

I've done Beothiah, Saggorath, Azura, and Melepha.

A NPC drags me to the Mal Morag one. I'm walking down the road when a man asks me to escort him to location and it turns out to me... a Shrine to Peyrite. Not twenty minutes later, a courier runs up to me with an Urgent Message. I follow the instructions and end up at a Shrine to Mierida.

She immediately speaks to me and demands I get something for her. :/

I'm standing there thinking "Damn, these deadra are popping up like mushrooms after it rains. Why can't I go five steps without being tossed into a deadric questline?"

And then it occurs to me: radiant storytelling.

I've meandered on most of the major quests, but I always immediately do the various deadra/divine quests. The game has decided to steer me to them as it's decided I like them.

Level 20 and feel like I've done nearly everything in Whiterun & Falkreath, and may be powerful enough to start tackling Riften proper.

I was a little sad that Rorikstead turned out to be a little hamlet with nothing much to do, but am hoping the outlying cities that I've avoided so far will provide good city stuff.

Have hardly bothered with the main quest except going up the Throat to get the sprint shout. The dragon doesn't seem very fun to fight - it was the same in Witcher 2, it's hard to take the kind of combat system you have there and take it to a flying giant thing. I mean, seriously, the first MQ dragon - the lieutenant gives a stirring speech to rouse the troops... except there's four freaking soldiers standing in the middle of the road! Then everyone trots ofver like it's a picnic and bring it down! WTF? At the start of the game it burned an entire town to a crisp by itself!

It would have been a lot better to have the dragon much more powerful, you require a lot more allies, and possibly rely on things like ensuring you protect some kind of heavy machinery (ballista-like, or whatnot) critical to success - maybe set directly outside Whiterun where there's more structure and guards. Same problem with Witcher 2, really - you have all these wonderful scenes with tons of soldiers, artillery and explosions all throughout the game, but when you have to fight a dragon it's basically a Super Mario 64 boss pied-a-pied.

After resisting the urge to play all night I decided to just have "an hour or two" and here I am five hours later and it's 6am, I stumbled into the Forsworn questline in Markarth and really enjoyed it, I sided with the Forsworn, I'm not entirely sure there was a choice but I wanted to help them either way.

One thing I'm left wondering is whether I'll get attacked at Forsworn camps now I'm one o the boys, experience Oblivion and Fallout 3 would lead me to believe that it won't make much difference but they've massively upped their game so it's possible.

The horseride from Markarth back to Whiterun is gorgeous by the way, I also found an Orc settlement :p

just an fyi: dragons appear to come in different flavors, some are quite weak, and others are ridiculous strong. the dragon at Helgen is like a super mega dragon i think, while the whiterun dragon was a dinky baby

Not that anyone here probably cares, and maybe some already know, but if you don't like the lack of detail in the very distant view, you can change the skyrim.ini (not skyrimprefs.ini) with these lines under "display":

uExterior Cell Buffer=36 (put to 72 instead of 36)

ugridstoload=x (x=a number between 6-9, or higher if your system can handle it)

Be aware it causes a huge fps drop and it gets saved into your save game file...that is, if you remove it from the ini later, any saves that used it won't load. So I wouldn't advise using this method for general gameplay/saves. It is kinda nifty to see more detail way far off tho. ... I'm such a sucker for these little tweaks.

Giants are much stronger than dragons. My frost atronach can easily tank a non-fire breathing dragon, but gets one-hit killed by a giant's power attack.

Yeah I noticed that, I assumed it was just because I was low level but I reached 20 and it's still happening :)

How is everyone finding the economy and weapon balance?

So far it seems like a huge step up from the traditional Elderscrolls cluster****, I'm not exactly wealthy at level 20 and I'm still using the Elven Axe I had at level 10 but the damage has scaled up nicely with my skills and buffs.

By this time in Oblivion or Morrowind I'd have been looking for new gear and installing mods that stop me becoming a billionaire, I much prefer this system.

Also last night I walked from Dawnstar to Winterhold, the frozen landscapes in the far north are just gorgeous.

I don't think you no longer get perks after level 50, what's the point of leveling otherwise. You just reportedly get levels way slower.

You might be right, I'm going off pre-release info from a long time ago with that one.

There are at least some good to great unique weapons and armour that can be found early, if you have the guts to crawl through a challenging dungeon.

I had to leave a spriggan infested dungeon early in the game, when I returned I found a unique katana. Later I picked up the Red Eagle's sword after following an unmarked quest.

Nice, I'm glad that unique items are being placed in the world again, Fallout 3 did that very well, I haven't found a single one yet but I've only done about ten dungeons and most of them were quest related.

This game is too big.

I'm really enjoying the Brotherhood quest line.. I don't know why - usually I play good guys, but with Bethesda games I always roll evil-mofo chick.

I'm similar-- in a world with no believable characters to empathize with, the natural choice is to be a sociopath.

I will never finish this game...

I know someone who finished the main plot at lvl 21. :)

But in terms of the whole game...yeah...it's like these games are designed to never be finished. heh

Btw, there seems to be a bug for some people where their save games suddenly vanish. I remember a bug like that in FNV too. So might be a good idea to back up saves now and then.

So, when will the release hype wear off? How far away are we from people starting to declare Skyrim as bland and uninspired?

I'm sure the fatigue will set in eventually. Hasn't happened yet though.

i can see someone complaining about the main plot being bland, but the environment? no way, its fantastic. (but not as good as morrowind, i'd peg it (from a world design perspective) halfway between oblivion and morrowind)
