...Steve Jobs dies

CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) -- Apple Inc. said the company's co-founder Steve Jobs died Wednesday. He was 56. "We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today," the company said in a brief statement.

"Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve."

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

I hate cancer.

Jaguars4ever is still alive.  No word of a lie.

Hm, 'immeasurably better', that's some claim.

I like Apple products. I like Pixar films. Thanks Steve!

You can't deny that he was a visionary.

RIP, Steve.

I like a lot of Apple products, but the culture surrounding Apple.... to hell with it.

But, Jobs also pushed Pixar through some tough times, and for that I am forever grateful.

Jobs had some interesting ideas, and yes, things like pixar are something to be grateful for. It's always sad for someone to die , especially from such a nasty case of cancer.

At the same time, the cult of the apple iphone worship can tend to get a wee bit annoying.

Cancer is a horrible way to go. R.I.P.

However, for all the people comparing his death to the one of John Lennon and JFK: Really?!, i mean really?!!

If someone like Jobs -who likely had the best doctors money can buy and an admirable drive- couldn't beat cancer, then it's pretty much a lottery. ****.

John who? And did something happen to New York's airport? :sorcerer:

(Always loved mainstream PC users attitudes towards Apple. I've had apple gear since 1989, and I've seen the attitudes go from "what's that?" "lol, it crashes all the time, buy a real computer" to the now prevalent "but the cuuulture!" :sorcerer:)

You're a cheery wee bugger, Nep. Have I ever said that?

Heh, I'm betting that they'll do some outlandish public grieving over this in Japan first.

Steve who?

Didn't he play a doctor in E.R? :sorcerer:

Really though, I admire what he did, even if I don't ever want to be part of it.

Wow, those people are real pieces of work. You see the sign the little kid was holding? Shameful.

Yes, this tweet was sent via Twitter for iPhone. The irony here is almost unbelievable.

God hates kids.

I was contemplating this the other day. Still, even in 10 years time modern medicine will be far more progressed than it is today (given historical trends and the current pace of scientific development, thanks in part to supercomputing), so I am somewhat confident that if I ever do get cancer, it should be in a time where the likelihood of survival (and without ****ing my life over too much) is reasonably good.

(in reference to the thread and the cultural response to his death in general) That said... you know what? **** Jobs. I'm sorry, he's not a bad person as far as dictators and rapists go, but god, the man was no good Samaritan. He was a manipulative capitalist* who, in all honestly, didn't really do anything significant to improve the world. I hate being negative about people but in this case there are better, more deserving people of our praise. So he marketed a product you enjoyed mildly more than the competing product and then died? Oh ****, I guess that DOES mean he changed the world.

*I have no overall qualms with capitalism - I admire it's efficiency, but if you want to go there, I do think markets do need sensible and strong regulation. I'm neither a Libertarian nor a socialist.

Like I said in the other thread, I'm not a fan of Apple per se but Jobs did things/got things done that were very influential to the tech/entertainment biz. Whether you like the trends he created is another story. :) I guess I kind of think of him as a genius marketer/consumer trend visionary, so I admired him for that even as I frowned at the i-everything mania (including itunes...). And I wonder if Apple can maintain their high level of trendy fame for long without him.

But yes, to call him a tech-Einstein (as I saw one article do  ) or compare him to Sagan,or JFK or whatever is...a bit much.

Still gaming with my 9900k/2080ti/32 ram. One day I suppose a game may inspire me to finally upgrade. Maybe.

Just want o say, that apparently the new iphone is eating families... because a husband can buy this, and basically start spying on his wife's location with this "my friends" thing.

Kevin Butler will awesome your face off.

I hate phones. Never understood this iThing fascination ;)

It was a sad day at work when I had to get my old, battered, kept together by sticky tape Nokia replaced by a newer model.

Why do people value those things so highly (genuinely curious)?

That story has no serious proof to it...some guy posts on a forum then never posts again. Journalists today...

Regardless, I can see it might be possible with that kind of app. Which between that and the normal GPS, is another reason I don't yet have one.

...same thing with GPS chips in cars. My old non-GPS car has 35K on it and I'm going to drive it until only duct tape is holding it together.

It's not that having a gaming pc that costs more then a console that makes them a superior human being, it's the fact that they use a gaming pc rather then a console that does that. ;)

You're looking just at the surface, not the rationale behind it. :)
