This claim about the 'good ol days' is a myth. There was no such thing.

The fact is I've seen such things happen. I'm on my final year at my university and I keep a close eye on what happens on the first year and with local high school kids. Things that were unimaginable only 5 years ago when I was in high school are commonplace now. It was say unthinkable to record porn vids on your cellphone with your gf and show them around to your classmates, extremely rare that people would bang like rabbits in their first year (15year olds mind you) with multiple partners being a thing of the norm. Smoking weed and ritual drunkenness (drinking until you collapse) were frowned upon, and only done by dropouts. Junkies were cretins to be laughed at and occasionally beat up. Now a friend tells me that on the uni trip to Paris his group spent (21-22yr olds) most of their time in hotel rooms high and drunk, or screwing around. The occasional fistfight were more or less the worst violence you could expect in a school yard. Now there's a stabbing almost every day, most of the time done with intent to kill.

The economical situation is not really any better or worse than when I was a kid, so the only thing I can deduce is that a shift in thinking has happened where violence, drinking yourself silly and casual sex have been spread from the "unsavory elements" and become the norm.

I wont even mention what the older generations are remarking about us and from what I see its pretty much correct.

Eh...your description of local High School life sounds like my High School...in the mid 1980s.

Well except the cellphones, those were unweildy and couldn't film jack.

That sounds depressing.

Nice to be "behind the times".

Heh. Sounds like secondary schools in Antwerp or Brussels here. Brussels may be the capital of Europe, it's an even bigger cesspool than Paris. I loathe having to travel to that stinking city for hours each day for work.

Cool, news from like a decade ago.

Who gives a ****? It is literally the same thing as if I was playing Hidden Agenda on my computer: some pixels moving in a way that gives me pleasure (or not, as in the case of my glorious socialist utopia swinging wildly into debt and losing its hard currency reserves/my character getting pushed into a train). In fact, in Hidden Agenda I probably hurt more pretend people much worse when my actions lead to Espinales and Ehrlich overthrowing my glorious regime and probably instituting a system of rape dogs like Pinochet.

Nobody was hurt in the making of this game, nor are they hurt in its play. Many people have sexual fantasies which they understand cannot be achieved or attempted In The Real World. And yes, I enjoy fiction which involves the protagonist doing things which would be morally repugnant in real life. Deal with it.

(and in most Australian states you can't buy X-rated material)

Huh, I had no idea it was so strict down under. Porn is available everywhere here. Theres even an entire DVD rack of porn at the local liquor store I stop at every Friday on my way home.

You can rent DVDs from Blockbuster and buy them from specialty stores, but most anything featuring non-simulated sex scenes will get an X rating, and X-rated films aren't available for purchase outside the ACT and Northern Territory. You can, however import them and own them legally, and apparently it's not uncommon to find X-rated films for sale in specialty stores even though it's technically illegal. Magazines use a different system, with all pornography getting a Restricted Category 2 rating, which can be purchased in any state.

So I guess technically it's strict down under, but realistically not so much.

I want the world to be equally outraged over the female version of Rapelay: As a woman, you rape men at the subway. I want to see men cry, i want to see male experts having long interviews about the moral implications of being raped at the CNN morning news. Then, and only then, our society has true equality of the sexes.

P.S. Gromnir scored some interesting points there.

"I dream things that never were and say why not?"

"Hope in reality is the worst of all evils because it prolongs the torments of man."

I don't really see why its terribly depressing. The only thing that has really changed about "teenagerdom" is how society views them and the consequences of their actions. You either had a few very exceptional years of students while you were in school or just missed some of the more sordid things that went down. Either is possible, really.

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

Frankly, I can't see this being any worse than games that depict realistic killing of people.

Both are sick, actually. There is a pretty big difference between a FPS or GTA style game and an actual realistic murder simulation.

I doubt he can give any, since it's doubtful he's ever murdered anyone. So he wouldn't very well know what a "realistic murder simulation" actually looks like.

I agree with Hurlshot. It's like the difference between shooting people in the A-Team, and in Man Bites Dog.

You know, I was going to point out that nobody was ever shot in A-team. But just before I hit "add reply", I realized that that was probably your point.

So, *ahem*, how is RapeLay a "realistic rape simulation" and GTA is not its general street crime counterpart?

For the record, I have played neither.

They both aren't, but somehow people (Americans for the most part) are more comfortable with violence than sex.

Boobie cards of willing sexual partners (although idiotic and puerile) is NOT the same as the rape and torture of strangers. Of course I don't find games promoting, even rewarding the rape and assault of women to be acceptable. It's not just "adult" entertainment; it's nothing more than pornography. Should animated pornography appealing to those who fantacize about rape and torture be illegal? Probably not, although it wouldn't break my heart if it were. Should it be acceptable? Definitely not.

I imagine this game and Japanese hentai in general is probably illegal in a good many countries. Can't say I personally think that manuals depicting the rape and torture of women and children should be allowed in any civilized society, but when you start banning animated "porn", then you've opened the door to banning games/books that depict murder, mayhem, eventually any illegal act. So although I'm disgusted by the kind of mind that would find this game "fun", I'd be leery of that slipperly slope when dealing with animated or drawn material.

tl;dr

why do I get the feeling it doesn't matter WHAT I said to you, because I'm a woman?

Isn't Tiger Woods Amerikan? He seems rather comfortable with sex more than violence.

I don't think you can really be so bigoetd and paint all Amerikans with the same brush. I would say portions of Amerika would fit description while otehrs would not. Afterall, the porn industry is rather successful. Just sayin'.

I think that Americans, generally speaking, find violence more socially and openly acceptable than sex, but enjoys sex more but prefers to keep it as private about it as possible.

Yeah, there is also a fairly gigantic difference between rape and surprise sex. I hope everyone understands that.
