entrerix
adding in all the little neat stuff about san andreas into the story and setting of vice city would be the most fun of them all I think. i didnt care much for gta 4. but it was nice to have better graphics Killing is kind of like playin' a basketball game. I am there. and the other player is there. and it's just the two of us. and I put the other player's body in my van. and I am the winner. - Nice Pete. WILL THE ALMIGHTY
Ico, Shadow of the Colossus. "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"
Enoch
What, no Civilization IV? Loses points in the "groundbreaking" area (unlike, say, Alpha Centauri), and how it is remembered will probably be heavily influenced by how the inevitable Civilization V is received. But it certainly earns mucho points for overall excellence.

bhlaab
1. It demonstrated, to the growing masses of console gamers, that atmosphere and character (through the voice snippets) can make a game better than just having flashy halo action. I'd argue that while Bioshock is certainly more intellectual than Halo, as far as an actual game goes that's still just all flash. The gameplay in Bioshock was a severe disappointment. Mamoulian War
WoW will be for sure... I played it for 4 years and now i think about it as boring quest hub, but the impact on MMO gaming and playerbase, will be remembered for very very long time... God of War i bet Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 will be written with golden letters into classic aswell... Witcher was an awesome game, but it will be classic only amongst CRPG fans, people outside of this niche, will more likely go with Mass Effect, which i think is CRPG abomination... But classic does not have to be classic for mainstream audience... What do you think how many people outside CRPG community thinks that BG is a classic ) Final Fantasy X is the most talked about FF game after FFVII, so this might become classic aswell (but i think it's out of 5 year bounds) i think i can aggree with Beyond Good and Evil with you... althought i never played it got few friends who were in love with this game and praised it a lot... And to Purkake: Selling millions of copies does not mean that the game will become a classic... If that would be true, that it would mean that New Kids on the Block are prime example of classic music which shall be remembered for eternity... And anyone who thinks that should be burned alive and buried under the sea surface... Sent from my Stone Tablet, using Chisel-a-Talk 2000BC. Sannom
Well, here is what I think (or is it what I would like?) will be a classic. I only list games that I played. Role playing games The Witcher : good universe and story, memorable protagonist, more mature themes than in your average game, developer's dedication to its fans, long-term choices. Neverwinter Nights 2 & add-ons : this is only if Obsidian really expands on what they did in the expansions for their next full-blown classical RPG. Perks linked to your reputations with your allies, overland map, character-focused story, etc. Action & Platform games Prince of Persia : The Sands of Times trilogy : especially the first and third game, the second one is too dark for the overall tone of the story. The first one will be remembered as the revival of the series and because of the gameplay, different than the two others. The third one took the more violent and classical gameplay of the second game, enhanced it, introduced the Dark Prince and gave us kick-ass boss battles. Rayman 3 : funny characters, georgeous art style, great gameplay, and I loved the kate-boarding between the levels. That was a good mini-game. Prototype : mainly remembered for the free-roaming, sensation of power when diriging Alex and general gameplay. Could ensure a place as a classic if a sequel expands and improve the original formula. Adventure games Runaways series : partly because they're good games in their own right and because there is a lack of competion. The art is beautiful, the characters funny and interesting, and the whole thing is a good experience. Edited September 2, 2009 by Sannom

As crazy as Infamous' story was it was heads above Prototype, which was an ugly, bland and uninspired slaughterfest.
