I just saw The Fountain. Its weird. I liked it. Thats really all I can say. When it was over, no one stood up. They just sat there watching the screen. Thats never happened unless there was something after the credits.

The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.

Funny thing is before going to see it I wanted to hear how it was from my myspace friends who'd sampled it. Some of them advised me to take painkillers... in case i laughed too hard.

Casino Royale (2006)

 

Great Bond film. The franchise seems to be back on track. Criag is no Sean Connery, but then again who is. I really loved the novel and the changes the movie made were a little hard to take. But all in all a very good movie.

3) Goldfinger (1964)

4) Dr. No (1962)

5) Licence To Kill (1989)

6) Thunderball (1965)

7) The Living Daylights (1987)

I haven't seen CR yet but I to say the I generally agree with the list, although I'm not sure OHMSS is number 1, but it definitely one of the better ones.

 

I'm thinking Goldfinger might be the best and I would probably replace LTK with Goldeneye, by far the best Bronsan Bond film.

 

Dalton is a good actor but not a good Bond. However, I do like The Living Daylights...had such a Cold War feel, which is appropriate for a spy movie set in the 80's.

 

The Moore movies were pure camp but that probably had a lot to do with the 70s and it being a time of feminism and activism of all types....his movies HAD to be corny in a sense.

 

Connery was the best Bond but his overt sexism and imperialist leanings was part of the charm...something that could never fly again.

don't know about the action figures or whether it has a cult fan base but there is a bunny rabbit in the movie.

 

 

basically, Donnie is very antisocial and a bunny rabbit that appears to him in visions is his only social life to speak of....well, the bunny encourages him to use his special powers to commit (what amounts to) cosmic crimes. if Donnie refuses, the bunny will not be his friend anymore.

 

 

it is actually a very good (albeit, very creepy) movie.

I've also heard there is a sequel to the Dungeons and Dragons movie...straight to DVD, I believe.

 

The sequel is better than the original. Even though the effects suck, in general the story and acting are better.

And Donnie Darko is awesome.

 

And I'm seeing the new Christopher Guest movie on Saturday. This is good.

Butterfly Effect may be Donnie Darko for special people, but Donnie Darko is The Matrix for people who want to appear intelligent and hip. At least Donnie Darko had actual actors in it.

 

Doesn't Donnie Darko have somewhat of a cult status? That pretty much excludes "overratedness."

Not so. People love **** movies (ie Titanic). But seeing how easy that is to forget, if a movie has a small, rabid fanbase, that may lead many people to regard that movie as better than it actually is, which is the definition of overrated.

 

Example: The Warriors. Midnight movie cult favourite. Yet, it's completely unwatchable and tacky. But the fact that it still persists as a cultural phenomenon has led many to call it a "classic". It's not. The Godfather is a classic. The Warriors is kitsch.

 

Or another example: Ed Wood films. People (ie Tim Burton fans) talk about his films like they're overlooked classics, labors of love from an untalented but big-hearted hack. But again, they are **** films. Just ****. Funny, but unintentionally so. Cult audiences tend to willfully mistake embarassment for accomplishment, and thus overrate the quality of their films.

 

But that's not always the case. The Big Lebowski was a cult movie that is as loved as it deserves to be, Texas Chainsaw Massacre was pretty scary, and as much as I dislike Tarantino, Resevoir Dogs was very much the right film at the right time.

good points, Pop. "Cult classics" are often just really bad movies that were unintentionally funny or ended up being the starting point for a well-known actor or had really good (improvised) effects, etc. In fact, I believe some of them were actually intended to loose money so as to be a tax write-off. In some cases, they actually made money.

 

anyway, Donnie Darko is not such a film. it is a really good film...strong writing and good acting.

 

I did like the Butterfly Effect but if I had to choose, I'd have to go with DD.

 

it seems that you can't have a movie like this without some sort of time travel (or, at least, I don't think it has been done yet). I'd like to see someone try.

The Matrix was virtually unknown when it first came out. People thought it was another Johnny Mnemonic(which it kinda was) but through word of mouth, its success grew and it gained a cult following in just a few weeks.

 

Blade Runner is a cult film, so is the first Star Wars trilogy and even The Dark Crystal. There are many others, none of which I have recently seen so I will shut up now for being off topic. :aiee:

Butterfly Effect was a good move. BE2, on the other, not so much. And, I'm trying to be polite here.

 

I would take BE over DD which was good but way overrated.

The Butterfly Effect doesn't even come close to the genius of Donnie Darko.

 

 

Donnie Darko tried combining a dozen different genres, and actually succeeded. It took me quite a few viewing sessions to grasp the plot. I'm not even sure I get all of it after all those times. Thus it intrigues me.

 

The Butterfly Effect had Ashton Kutcher. Thus it disgusts me.
