Hubby: "Wanna go to the grocery store later today?"
Me: "Sure! Yay! Excitement/event of the week! Maybe we should get some early dinner too?"

...such is our life at the moment.

Although last week, hubby's car broke, mine wouldn't start/stay juiced even after jumps with a portable power/jump unit thingie, and the van needed a jump (that one worked/stuck). Hubby's car now fixed (dealer shop), mine has a new battery. I guess lack of excitement is sometimes better.  :shifty:

Most exciting thing for me is trying a new scent of deodorant.

I spent the last 3 days putting ~2,000 comics in new short bins and trying to organize a little.  Admittedly I gave up on the last 6 bins (or my back did) so I didn't actually keep track of what went into those bins other than to make sure a few small groups of comics weren't in them.  Now I'll spend a few weekends writing what's in the bins in a more specific sense and all that so that once I've got everything in new bins I can start putting like titles together in some sort of logical way.

Was off yesterday, checked work today to see if a #$@#%@# FTP process decided to work.  Amazing to see a guy trying to power his way through my Out Of Office status in Teams, messaging me at 2 am.  At least it was a productive day out, got to run into a guy who was drunk at 9:30 AM

I like coming back from making coffee or the lunchbreak to a plethora of Teams calls. If only the software would give people an indicator when someone is AFK... dunno, it could set the status to away or something. That would be something.

I once did leave my status as "Be Right Back" for 3 weeks though, before someone pointed it out to me.

Kind of like driving down the road with your turn signal left on, I suppose. I once left my vacation e-mail auto-reply on for weeks after getting back. It was surprisingly peaceful.

Woke up, checked my mail, Amazon tells me I am now subscribed to Luna+'s free trial.

I certainly did not sign up, I also did not get any notifications that a new login happened or a new device was registered, which Amazon normally sends my way, plus I have 2FA active. Killed the subscription, deleted the app from my catalogue, checked my device list (everything in order) and changed my password, just to make sure. Did read that it is possible to sub to Luna+ even when you have a security PIN set up, so I guess it's technically possible that my wife clicked something on the Fire TV stick. Would be strange, but not impossible.

Nothing else was ordered, so that speaks against a hacked account. I mean, out of all things, why'd anyone hijack an Amazon account just to sub to the cloud gaming service, not change the e-mail address or buy stuff that cannot be returned or cancelled (like Microsoft licence keys)? Bizarre.

Well yeah, but certainly not the language's fault when a programmer doesn't know how to reference JAVA_HOME.  So many instances where we have this crap, like our engine zips files, and it needs a WinSCP dll that's in C:\My Downloads|work stuff

So, I was probably 36 when I first joined here? I'm sure I was jokingly calling myself an old lady/old fart back then.

20 years later, I'm still/also calling myself an old fart, but it means a little more now.

If I'm lucky, 20 years from now, same.

The definition of old fart is apparently ageless.

Preordered the Switch 2. I need to make an effort to use it more than my old OLED Switch, which sits mostly unused in the dock.

My son is struggling in beginner Spanish. I've been teaching for 20+ years, and I have a hard time understand what kind of madness this teacher has. This is a crazy thing to send out to parents.

MAKEUP WORK

A number of students and parents have contacted me regarding missing work or extra credit.  So, by popular demand: Homework (limited) Amnesty Week is back!

During break next week students are allowed to make up up to 10 assignments for full credit (with rules of course). Please read ALL rules. Failure to read/follow rules will result in no points made up.

THE RULES:

1. Must have a coversheet listing all work that is included/completed.

2. All assignments must be clearly labeled stating what it is, the number of the assignment and the date due. (This can be found in Aeries)

3. All assignments must be completed fully.  NO PARTIAL . . . so if it is question and answer, the question and answer must be written fully…. If it is sections 1 through 3, then only doing 1 and 2 get no points.  (If you already have partial, you may resubmit ALL the completed assignment . . . however… *read 4

4. All assignments must must be at least 70% correct.  This is late work so we have already gone through it so I have an expectation of reasonable accuracy.

5. If it was online or an online form, it must be listed on the coversheet so I know to open the form/website and look for it. Failure to list it on the coversheet will result in it not counting.

6. Students missing videos may only make up 1 video. The missing video must be DIRECTLY e-mailed to me and is due by 4/20 at 11:59 PM.

7. All questions regarding what the assignment is must be handled by Friday, 4/11. I will NOT answer questions over break. Students can come in during tutorial, brunch or lunch. I will not respond to emails regarding worksheets. (Please verify in Aeries/google classroom if the worksheet is available online.)

8.  Any missing worksheets must be obtained by the student by Friday 4/11 *Many can be printed out from online and there may not be extras of those. Students without a printer, can write the answer*whatever would be expected normally* on paper.

9. All book work must be completely written out, questions and answers in complete sentences just as it was on a regular day.  NO DIGITAL COPIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.

10.  Any written work completed must be turned in to me (or dropped at the office) by Monday, April 21st .  NO EXTENSIONS will be given for any reason and paper work must be turned in on paper.  This is already late work; so, it will not be accepted later even for excused absence.  If the student is out, the work must be turned in to the front office by 3:45 PM. THIS INCLUDES STUDENTS THAT DO NOT HAVE SPANISH THAT DAY…NO EXTENSIONS.

*****Homework due on 4/11 is NOT ELIGIBLE to be made up unless it was for excused absence. This is not a give away for students to take another day off before break.

*After this make up week, there will be no other homework make up this semester except for excused absence or legal obligation.

*Extra Credit- There will be a project at the of May. Any student who is missing any assignments and does not make up the work (up to 10) will NOT be allowed to do the EC project. They will be removed from the opportunity before the opportunity is given.

Now, the other EC over break: It will involve parents . . . music . . . and e-mailing me. There will be five days of challenges starting on Monday during the break . . . The rules will be posted along the with the first challenge on Monday.

It would be interesting if you could share your thoughts as to why. I'm neither particularily versed in teaching techniques (modern or otherwise) nor with your school system, so I am left guessing as to what exactly you think is so crazy. I might also not have the best perspective, given what the last five years of my school life looked like. We certainly never got a homework amnesty week, but plenty of projects over breaks and holidays. :p

Edit: Well, whoever the person is, they are coming across as a major douchewaffle, so there's that. :shrugz:

Of course, I have no context and/or am not familiar with some concepts (eg, "Aeries") but it doesn't seem a very professional write up, which is kind of funny, since language teacher. Maybe they wrote it after 4 big glasses of red wine.

Or they are hoping to actually discourage anyone from doing it, so they'd have less work to do themselves.

"douchewaffle" indeed, perhaps.

i'm puzzled by the term 'make up up to ten assignments'. If you are struggling with a language, the missing part is the skeleton you need before you can start learning/reading on your own. Gramma, syntax, practise exercises, all of those things. It's pretty common for the learning curve to be vastly different for every student because you need those basics first. Another thing is, I don't know how you do a deep dive when your phone translation app is better than you at all levels except expert. I would demoralise me certainty. I'm thinking the students are the same, hell everyone is the same. The tech bros are all telling us to learn nothing and just be customers instead.

If I had to learn Spanish I would get a bunch of movies for exposure and start reading books, including but no limited to textbooks, with an LLM window open and just ask a million questions. what is this structure, how does that work, on and on. Some would be wrong answers, but most would be right.

Foreign Language at the High School level in the US is a bit of a racket. You are required to take 2 years (3 to qualify for a lot of colleges.) The options are typically Spanish or French, and the teachers have to compete to try and get enough enrollment in their classes. The actual fluency rate of a student after a few years of these classes is abysmally low. I'm talking maybe 10% of students walk away from these programs with a decent understanding of a new language. It's just not really a good model. These are High School kids taking 6 other classes, extracurriculars, dealing with puberty and social issues. It's a terrible approach.

Some schools offer immersion programs as early as Kindergarten. Those are way more successful. But the current High School model is not something I can really get behind. My kid is actually interested in languages, too. He uses Duolingo, he listens to Mexican folklorico music. But the class has really soured him on it all.

Yeah, it's not really a 6 hours a week kind of endeavor. You have to dive in at the deep end, and you have to enjoy the process. Otherwise I don't see it working out in most cases.

Schools serve brunch now?

You didn't have a brunch or recess growing up? It feels like the schedule has always been a couple early classes, break around 10, a couple more classes, lunch, a couple afternoon classes, end the day.

Although I remember we used to serve breakfast. That has been replaced by brunch.

We had recess in elementary but not in any school after that. It's just classes until lunch, lunch, classes until the end of school, some kind of after school sports practice, go home.
