We track so many other things, but the idea of actual data driven policing is for some reason taboo. not taboo. complex. the US is almost unique when it comes to police. we do not have a national police force. police power is reserved to the states, which is actual one reason why national mask mandates for covid is functional impossible, 'cause as odd as it sounds, such mandates is considered, from a law pov, a police power. the fed may mandate for fed employees, but not state citizens. each state has its own police, and boy do they ever have police... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_law_enforcement_agencies_in_California you are never gonna see us post wiki as basis in fact, but the link provides a rough notion o' how many police forces there is in ca alone, and those numbers is hardly a california thing. check for wisconsin or missouri if you wish. similar extreme numbers. gonna use covid again to stress another point and that is that municipal and county sheriffs departments is beholden to their own constituencies more than the governor, so when governor newsom passed mask mandates, a fair number o' municipal police departments and county sheriffs simply announced they were not gonna enforce the mandates, and there was little the governor could do 'bout such violations o' the rule o' law from a practical perspective. sure, its illegal for the sacramento county sheriff to refuse to enforce covid mandates, but what then? ok, so the fbi asks state and local departments to keep records and share data on all sorta crime data and is then up to state and local departments to decide if they wanna share such data. there is fed grant money often tied to sharing data, but state and local departments are often creative or just plain lazy when it comes to how accurate and detailed is the data they share, and there isn't a damn thing the fed government may do to compel the yuba county sheriff to be more diligent in transmitting numbers and reports. is not taboo. is federalism. is complex. is almost uniquely american in its perversity. I think there's a segment of US politicos who absolutely despise giving away anything, and I do mean anything, away on principle. Kids are being forced into school (in the sense that it is mandatory to attend school for most) for what roughly correlates to an 8 hour shift with a lunch break, so free school lunches seems like a good thing when opposed to putting kids into lunch debt or just not feeding them. 1 "Akiva Goldsman and Alex Kurtzman run the 21st century version of MK ULTRA." - majestic "you're a damned filthy lying robot and you deserve to die and burn in hell." - Bartimaeus "Without individual thinking you can't notice the plot holes." - InsaneCommander "Just feed off the suffering of gamers." - Malcador "You are calling my taste crap." -Hurlshort "thankfully it seems like the creators like Hungary less this time around." - Sarex "Don't forget the wakame, dumbass" -Keyrock "Are you trolling or just being inadvertently nonsensical?' -Pidesco "we have already been forced to admit you are at least human" - uuuhhii "I refuse to buy from non-woke businesses" - HoonDing "feral camels are now considered a pest" - Gorth "Melkathi is known to be an overly critical grumpy person" - Melkathi "Oddly enough Sanderson was a lot more direct despite being a Mormon" - Zoraptor "I found it greatly disturbing to scroll through my cartoon's halfing selection of genitalias." - Wormerine "I love cheese despite the pain and carnage." - ShadySands

Its like were some kind of animals over here. I do understand your concern because we had no free lunches ever at school and yet most kids had a lunch box but I do remember in high school some kids from the lower academic classes went to school every day with no money and no lunch. But to be honest they would be considered lower class white kids who came from rough backgrounds and I assume their parents didnt care about them eating, also Apartheid SA would definitely have examples of real parental failure .....its completely foreign to me because that would have been impossible to entertain from my mom But I do think that in some countries a culture is developing where some people arent prepared to take responsibility for things that they should and then the expectation is that government must pay or needs to . For example surly anyone who plans to have kids must also be balanced with " can I afford the cost of this " And I am not suggesting that if you live in poverty you cant have kids, of course not. But I question if this type of initiative is the best way to spend resources ? 9 hours ago, Hurlsnot said: You are probably being facetious, but it does remind me that when my wife taught in an inner city high school for years, before winter and summer breaks a number of the kids would act out. I understand your view on these topics will always be seen as what is best for the actual experiences of kids so I understand you cant be expected to see the potential problem with this initiative But I will give you an SA example of what we see sometimes with these programs, some public sector schools are in the rural areas of SA and that doesnt mean they automatically worse. Not at all as sometimes the rural schools produce better results but in SA many public sector schools do provide a free meal for breakfast\lunch and its mentioned by some that this meal is the first meal the kids have. During the pandemic certain public sector institutions didn't understand correct virus prevention and overreacted so we have had months of some public sector schools that have not been open. Anyway this has created a real issue raised on talk shows where some callers now phone in and raise how the shutting down of schools has led to a crisis where now " these kids get no meal for the day " .... And now you can see the issue, this free school meal cannot be how any parents feed their kids .....its abuse and their must be some responsibility taken outside of the state providing meals ?
