The Vancian system did a VERY good job of limiting the Wizard's incredible variety of spells without gimping said spells or creating an overpowered class. AND it also led to some damn fine strategic planning. I have yet to hear an alternative that sounds as good. Anywho, this is from Wikipedia; some may find it useful:

That's better than a straight mana system with all spells available but that still means that the mage can swap in a bunch of buffs or utility spells, cast them and then swap in some other spells and charge into combat. That kinda system seems very, very open to abuse. Maybe the act of swapping spells would cancel out buffs? What about spells like knock? It seems to me that kinda system would either require limiting the wizard repetoire of spells or drastically nerfing them. *Btw, has anyone brought up an event based magic system ala-4E? So, you have at-will powers (spammables), encounter powers (not sure how easy these would be to program; i.e. how do you delieniate one encounter from another in one of these games) and daily powers (these would be very powerful spells and would be memmed similarly to a vancian system). It not perfect by any means but it seems better to me than a mana system.

No system makes any sense since we are talking about magic. This game is to be a spiritual successor of the IE games. As such, I would argue that the primary concern here should be to include a system that does 2 things: 1. Provides the same level of challenge and depth as the IE games 2. Provides the same level of immersion as the IE games In other words, I would hope the devs would approach this from the standpoint of "first, do no harm." We can sit here till we're blue in the face discussing whether a mana system is more or less immersive. We can debate whether or not it aids in suspension of disbelief. My point would be whatever issue there might be with a Vancian system, a mana style system certainly does NOT provide the same challenge or tactical depth (for the assorted reasons already provided by others in this thread). I hope that if the devs do move away from memorization, then some thought is put into what kind of system would work better in their real time/pause world while still providing the same tactical depth. Mana would just feel so wrong too.

I am sure. That video us WHY I am asking. From what has been said, it is evident much has already spit balled and discussed. It is also clear they have things they want and a direction. Since we are not privvy to those discussions we do not know where they are at here. They may not be able to answer all questions above in detail, but they may well have a vision and direction for the class system as it pertains to specialization.
-
Though there will be classes, will there be some kind of specialization possible within that system. The old IE games had kits, style/weapon proficiency points and thieving skills. Newer 3E games have feats and skills. My questions for any devs that care to answer are thus: 1. Will PE have specialization within the class system in addition to the announced non-combat skills? 2. If so, what will this look like? Will there be feats, skills, and/or what? 3. If PE will have specialization within the class system, what do you envision to be the extent of that specialization? Passive bonuses, active abilities, etc etc. 4. If PE will have specialization within the class system, will that specialization be class based or not. In other words will the options, such as passive weapon specialization or perhaps even active ability selection vary from class to class?

Update #12: Reddit Q&A with Tim Cain
Shevek replied to The Guildmaster's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
I like that modding is at least something they like. Maybe with that in mind, they can try to package the gamefiles in such a way that does not preclude modding. Then they can go from there.- 85 replies

I loved the moddability of BG2. Most of my replays nowadays are BG1/2 combo installs with a whole bunch of fan bug fixes and minor additions. Without the mod community that grew around the IE games, I doubt I would replay them as much as I did. Modding tools are the single most fruitful addition Obsidian can make. Think about it, by releasing a set of tools, they can instantly add dozens upon dozens of people to the single-minded cause of improving their game for them at no cost. Modders like the Pocket Plane Group, Spellhold Studios and others channel their efforts into fine-tuning and enriching the IE games as much as they could. This was their hobby. They did this because they were passionate and had a desire to make the games as perfect as they could. Frankly, if the devs want to really get even more people behind this game, they should make some basic mod tools and release them BEFORE the game is out. The tools do not have to be super user friendly either. They should be aiming at making some highly functional tools that a talented minority can use well. That will allow those in the (still active) IE mod community to channel their efforts into this game if they are interested.

A dog companion?

A dog companion?
Shevek replied to bonarbill's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I guess only a dog owner would get this. I have a welsh Springer spaniel. I call him Q (trek reference ). Once you've had a dog, you really learn to appreciate the emotions and thoughts they convey through seemingly basic actions and sounds. My pal Q was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. I cannot explain the sadness I felt when I found out. An entire bottle of Jameson disappeared overnight when me and my wife got the news. He picked up on those emotions instantly and seemed entirely intent on cheering me up. He knew something was wrong with himself (pain, large lump on throat, swollen organs, etc) but my emotional pain was more important to him. He jumped on my lap, looked up at me and gave me a doggie version of a hug. Now THAT is a loyal companion. -

Dogmeat!!!! -
I think you may be right but I am pretty sure the devs care more about the discussion than the poll numbers. They should be able to pick up on that confusion easily enough as they peruse the discussion. If the poll numbers do say anything, they make it clear that a large plurality want a feature included that is easy to implement and would be totally optional.

I would like to echo what Bill Gate's Son said. The devs have stated that companions are totally optionable. Over and over they have stated that one could through the game with the main character alone. If that is the case, then there is no justification to claim that one cannot have custom npcs for roleplaying reasons. This game has the potential to be a truly great title. PE can be a game that BOTH has the deep dungeon hacking of older titles while ALSO delivering a compelling story. Why not give players the option to play the game as they wish? Why not take that dungeon hacking element and exponentially deepen it by allowing those that wish to to create that party as they see fit? This is a relatively cheap feature to implement. It would not detract from those that choose not to use it. Honestly, putting this in is an easy win-win.

Do not make the game isometric
Shevek replied to Bercon's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Obsidian has it right. 2d with 3d models plays well on more computers, takes less time to make and still looks damn good. The fixed camera drastically reduces to amount of art assets you have to make and the distance from the characters reduces the amount of detail required for them to look good. This means less total dev time and, therefore, less funding required. More time and effort can therefore be dedicated to making the actual game better. -
I honestly do not understand why people are against this. How is allowing others to create their own party hurting your experience? Even if you prefer prefab, how is giving others an option a bad thing? Being able to craft my own party is one of the main reasons me and my friends replayed and continue to replay BG2. Frankly, without that option, I would play the game once, maybe twice, and that's it. Custom party creation increases replay value exponentially.

Instead of fighting for something pointless like this that CANNOT even be seen easily (considering the distance from the characters), ask for customization options you CAN see. Look at what the old IE did as far as allowing you to select the color scheme for each character. Now that IS somewhat visible. What you folks are asking for will... 1. clutter up the UI 2. have next to no impact on what you can see 3. take up development time and money All around terrible idea

Sub class skill trees

I would prefer multiclasses like how they did it with the old IE games with a feat system layered on top of that. -
