  1. The wealthy pay more taxes. Don't take my word for it. http://www.irs.ustreas.gov/pub/irs-soi/01in04sr.xls Now, let's not start fighting. I like this thread, but I don't want an all out flame war. We can discuss things reasonably here without turning into message board cowboys.
  2. The rich pay the lion's share of taxes in the United States. At any rate, I think my post seemed far less like talking points than your response, Atomic. I've heard the Democratic "talking points" over the years, and yet it does not escape my notice that most people in the United States are doing well. Increasingly, we have Democratic candidates telling us in the United States that the rich are getting richer while we languish at the bottom of the heap. I've never seen so many people bound and determined to believe that they are oppressed when, indeed, they have it rather good. Do I think we should do away with a tax system that puts the majority of the tax burden on the rich? Of course not. The rich have greater wealth from the system and therefore should shoulder more of the burden. It's in their best interest to do so. On the other hand, I'd appreciate folks not suggesting that the middle class shoulders the majority of the burden. The middle class carries the majority of the tax burden in neither straight dollars nor in percentage. Yes, I do think that Democrats target the rich. This was especially clear in John Edwards' "two Americas" speech. If there are two Americas, the second America didn't show up at Edwards' rallies. They were too busy trying to survive daily in inner city slums. Since those slums have existed under both Democrats and Republicans, I see no moral high-ground for either side.
  3. I'm not going to watch the Lost for one simple reason: my wife doesn't watch the show. I watch the news or listen to music. Hell, the only reason I even read this thread is because it's in WoT and I read everything in the Obsidian Entertainment fora of these boards. I learn a lot of stuff, so I'm not complaining, but otherwise I wouldn't even have learned the interesting stuff I know so far about the show. I've never seen Desperate Housewives for the same reason. I have to admit that my wife and I are Terri Hatcher fans for different reasons. EDIT: hahaha. Okay, I meant to say Teri Hatcher FANS.
  4. We're not to the mid-term elections at any rate. The next election Clinton has is for New York Senator. I foresee that she will win. I guess anything is possible in politics, eh?
  5. Hey, I didn't see any flaming. Where?! Where?? I want to see. Seriously, though. We can't entirely avoid disagreement on the board. It would be very boring place otherwise. ...And I'm honestly surprised that everyone is still, by and large, on the topics of the LOST show and TV in general. This is the only information I'll likely have on these shows.
  6. I don't believe he is dishonorable. I also take for granted that he honestly believes in his cause. He is disingenuous, it's true. So are all politicians from what I can tell. Still, I'd one of those hopeless fellows who believes as best about folks as reasonably possible.
  7. I know what your trying to get at, and it sounds clever & witty, but I would suggest it's BS. After all, we are talking about the show in a thread about generally how great LOST is.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ahh, it made me laugh out loud. I have to admit, I've never seen either Desperate Housewives or Lost. Okay, only 10 more pages before you hit the hall of fame! Woo Hoo! Hopefully the next season is good enough to fill up the space.
  8. The problem for Kerry is that he's a known loser. Once you've lost your bid for president, neither party is keen on risking more money on you. Individual supporters cast a bleary eye in the same way. That's too bad, because I believe Kerry is an honorable fellow who wants what he believes is best for the country. I'll probably vote for the Republican, but that's just me being a trillionaire and all. :D Actually, my wife and I are middle class in both our values and our household income. Kerry was not my candidate of choice, but it certainly wasn't personal. Clinton appears to be positioning herself to the right of Kerry, but that might not save her. On the other hand, the liberal side of the house, no matter how genuine their aims and concerns, have not really shown an interest in helping the middle class. They've been far more interested in punishing the rich. Unfortunately, they seem to think that punishing the rich is the same as helping the poor. You have to be careful when you target the rich, though. You might hurt a lot of us middle class folks while you're at it. It sounds nice, you know, to bring down those rich folks a notch or two. Still, I'd rather not stay awake at night worrying that some rich guy might be having fun. Far more interesting to me is my state of affairs. Of course, folks suggest that Republicans are misers who care nothing for the poor. Conversely, I lived in poverty in my youth. My wife and I contribute freely to charitable causes. As a percentage of our income, we give far more money, time, and talent than do my more vocal liberal friends. That's not to say that my liberal friends, and I use the term friends without any irony, don't donate of themselves. That's also not to say that I haven't met a few conservative skin flints. ...But gross generalizations and stereotyping are the hallmarks of a sloppy argument.
  9. Arnie could qualify if he proved that he was a foreign born but became a citizen before the adoption of the constitution. If you know of anyone that old, then he has a chance.
  10. I tell you one issue where we have shown considerable consistency: we're not going to get into long discussions in a thread in WoT regarding our decisions. PM the mod in question. PM Fionavar if you think individual mods are overstepping the bounds of moderation. Here's my pledge, any PM I receive that calls my moderation into question, I will post in the moderators' forum to see what the team as a whole thinks of it. By the way, has anyone wondered why there are more mods? Have you considered that the reason the admins brought more mods on board is because they'd like to see more moderating? Basically, the folks on this board have become accustomed to a decided lack of moderation and are now complaining that we've gone too far.
  11. I would download the uninstall mod. Seriously, though, there are a lot of mods out there that do wonders for the packaged campaign, let alone creating a new game. My personal favorite was the mod that gave one of the shopkeepers 50k gold. Sure, it's cheesy, but no more cheesy than managing your sales and expenditures until you could make up the difference. It added tedium to a game that was already steeped in tedium. That's the advice I have... install mods that take away those aspects of the game that you find irritating. Then play the packaged campaign before you head off to full scale mod conversions.
  12. Follow the Day --polyphonicssomethingoranother
  13. Nothing provides greater grounds for offense than popularity. It's far easier to show your refined tastes when looking down your nose at the commercially successful endeavors of others. Notice, my friend Vixen, how you say "despite its popularity." The popularity was a strike against the show. Don't flame me! I'm just sayin'...
  14. absolutely brilliant.
  15. Here's a little something: "No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States." Article II section 1 of the constitution.
  16. You dn't "repeal" the constitution. It would require actually changing the law. By the way, you need not be born in America to become president. You need only have been born before the adoption of the Constitution. No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States. If you're really, really old, then it doesn't matter where you were born.
  17. date a wookie. Hahahahaha
  18. I've dated blondes. I've dating women with every hair color. I prefer dark hair with fair skin. I have to admit, I know I'll be pilloried for this, but I don't like hairy women either. The fact is, though, that not all dark haired women are particularly hairy.
  19. I guess I should have created a new thread, but I thought that this thread was a great place to discuss weird little tid bits of information, just as meta mentioned. However, there's still room for all sorts of discussions about strange ideas or facts. I've heard about a stange aquatic plant that has a lifespan of several thousand years, but I can't find information on it. It's supposed to dwell in the deepest parts of the ocean and unable to survive being transplanted. I really don't know much about it, though. To think that something could live for 20-30 thousand years. It boggles the mind.
  20. Geez, you don't even think the Canadians use correct grammar? Hey, someone post a picture of the desktop. We're getting away from pics. Here I'll post a new desktop
  21. You're Canadian, Vixen? I always thought you were English.
  22. How long does each test take?
  23. First of all, I refuse to issue myself a warning. It's simply un-American. Second of all, I the letter combination creates a diphthong. It's ah ee. At least it is in Greek. A digraph is a single sound. Anyhow, I didn't say you were wrong. I said, "[ b]y the way, it really is D A E D A L U S, unless you're using Greek script. Unfortunately, we can't use the Greek font on this board." HA! So there! Finally, I mean the word doofus only with the utmost respect. :D
  24. Ain't that the truth?
  25. What I'm saying is that, while you can use one character for the sound, Latin and Greek does not. Daedalus is a Greek word in which two vowels combine to make a diphthong. Same with Latin. The funny thing is, in academic settings, Daedalus is pronounced like Day delus, Dead alus, or deed alus. That's even among folks in the field who all know very well it was originally pronounced DIE-delos. So, to get away from the interesting but superfluous information, my point is that Daedelus is the most common spelling of the name. That's just a fact. Of course, I'm probably looking at it from a different perspective. On the other hand, it's not like folks don't recognize the name in either form.
