Woohoo... Got my Sapphire 4780x2 plugged in (sort of, see below), plus the additional HDD's Having fun with the HDD's trying to set them up as a bios raid. It bsods Windows and according to the allmighty google, all I need is to reinstall Windows and use a floppy disk with some special Intel drivers on it I think I might look for alternatives, if necessary just as two separate disks at the moment. Obervations on Sapphire cards: It's friggin heavy It looks like a brick, it weighs like a brick (close to a Kilogram) and it alone is as noisy as my old PC (I know, Mkreku had warned me about that) And finally, it's an incredibly poor fit inside the case with more than half a centimeter gap beween the rear panel and the mounting/fitting thing of the card. Poor design or poor craftmansship? I might need to find some pieces of metal tubing and some very long screws to actually attach that brick of a card to the case. I definitely need water cooling for this one Oh yeah, and then of course, it is very fast. I always did wonder what NWN2 would look like maxed out and still have a good framerate. Now I know

A question for you GD (and taks too for that matter, you guys being the "arch-capitalists), whats your view on the current goverment takeover of the large financial institutions? Shouldn't they have been left in peace, to crash and burn as would have been naturally, perhaps paving the road for new and upstart banks, insurers what have you? If say some South American government had "nationalised" companies in that way, there would have been no end to the outrage.

The original fallout between HA and Bandidos was about market shares of the drug market. I wouldn't be surprised if the same solution would work again, once the politicians finally get their act together.

I'm curious. Since disk 3 and 4 are being used as a backup, would it be possible to have the +1 portion covered by a single drive of equivalent capacity to disk 1 + disk 2? Say you have two 320GB drives in RAID 0, could you use a single 640GB drive to bring that to RAID 0+1? Not really In a RAID 1+0, you create the stripes between the mirrors Mirror1 -Stripe- Mirror2 ... etc. In a RAID 0+1, you mirror the stripes Stripe1 | mirror | Stripe2 You end up needing an even number of disks when mirroring. There are some non-standard RAID setups that deviates from that though, like the Linux MD RAID10 which can do what you suggest. It is just not commonly available.

Well of course I'd need a lathe and a router and a miter saw and a band saw and a couple of sanders and a large enough space to put them in as well. Then life would be good. All the giant wooden lawn cats a man could ever dream of. *sigh* Today I started answering phones for work. It was scary and I ignored the first call on purpose so I didn't have to do it but then two calls came soon after and things went alright. Luckily I don't have to call anyone unless I'm transferring someone but it's fast enough to where I don't have the time to have a mini anxiety attack like I normally do when I need to call someone important. So far work is actually going quite well. I mean I would still rather be at home playing video games and watching an assortment of entertainment on my computer but I do get to do monotonous work that lets you turn your brain off, most of the while listening to old Lovelines and for the most part being left alone. Sadly though it's brought up something that I don't want to think about and that is money. Luckily I am able to live at home with 0 expenses so the 9 dollars an hour I make basically goes to the bank but now that I calculate my weekly and monthly earnings I don't quite understand how the hell people can even begin to survive without working at the very least 2 jobs, even if your making $15+. It depends on what your RAID controller supports. I think for most home desktops, they would need to be all SATA drives (all IDE on older motherboards). Having similar disks also prevents you from wasting the better drive, as you get the "lowest common denominator" regarding size and speed.

Slight change of plan, as that particular model HDD was/is out of stock. Decided to go for two 640Gb disks instead. Decided to bite the bullet and ordered a Sapphire ATI Radeon 4780X2 with 2Gb Ram. I've seen water cooling blocks that are ready for them, so I'll look around a bit and see if I can find an Australian reseller. Now I just need to find a suitable monitor, then I am more or less done for now.
