Eh, I'm pretty comfortable with the way things are, thanks though. Obviously there are a few things I'd like to adjust, but the system as a whole is pretty nice.

That isn't quite right. Schools are in the same category as fire and police departments and hospitals. The government pays the school districts to perform a service. The reason I think it is important to understand the difference is that when a school does very poorly, the government can intervene and take over operations. This is considered about the worst thing that can happen to a school. It was part of the No Child Left Behind act. It has also proven ineffective, as the schools taken over have yet to show any improvement and struggle to attract employees.

Battlefield 2142 is superior to both, really. But I would stick to the Battlefield series if you want the latest game, BC2 is supposed to be very good, you get vehicles and large maps, and that is all I need to be happy, along with a nice sniper rifle. edit: This thread makes me miss playing BF2 with the Obsidian folks. I think I still have alanschu as my most killed in the BF2 stats.

Prediction time: San Jose over Chicago in 5. It will probably be the best series to watch this year. They have a ton of skill guys, and it is hard to imagine either team not going on to win the cup. Of course I'm rooting for my home squad. Montreal over Philly in 6 - I have a hard time believing a backup goalie with a few games is going to beat Halak in a seven game series.

Community was the only concern for me, that is a fantastic comedy. Sons of Tuscon was actually pretty decent, it deserved a bit more time to find an audience. American Dad and The Cleveland Show are terrible and just cling to The Simpsons and Family Guy to survive.

Considering it can't even get past the language filter here, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it isn't appropriate apparel for school. Feel free to wear it elsewhere. Students are learning how to act in a professional environment when they attend school. While there are some jobs out there where you can wear whatever you want, many employers have expectations of a dress code. Schools are not quite as strict as a major corporation, but it isn't a free for all.

1. I have stated over and over again that the students should not have been sent home or threatened with suspension. 2. I am not aware of any national redneck holiday being celebrated in schools. 3. If a group of students wore t-shirts that caused a disturbance in school, then I would speak to them about the proper time and place to make political stances.

I'm not trying to be rude to Volourn, but this has been a very interesting debate and I think both sides are better off ignoring his broken record posts. No need to let the discussion get cluttered.

I'm pretty sure we moved past that like 5 pages ago. It doesn't matter what you put on, if you put it on with the objective of baiting, then you are baiting.

I'll be honest, that type of philosophy is not going to be all that successful if you ever go into education. That is essentially like trying to repair the dam after it bursts. You will find your job much easier if you establish a strong framework and tackle problems at their root. I found this line to be fairly condescending, but also very illuminating about your grasp of being a professional educator. It is not a job for everyone, it requires a certain type of mindset. That is why there is such a huge burnout rate, 50% of new teachers quit within the first 5 years. Given that it is a job with good benefits and 3 months of vacation, that is a surprisingly high number. My job is easy because I run my classroom with respect. I establish the importance of respect right away and I stay on it. If a student starts baiting another, I get on it immediately. I don't let it fester because over the course of an entire year I would eventually lose control. I also maintain a balance, more carrot than stick, as the saying goes. The administrator went too far with the stick here, as we've established.

Yes, we already established that the principal was wrong. The issue at hand is whether any action was necessary by the administration. My argument is that a disciplinary action was not appropriate, but they would be remiss to not address the intentional baiting. If a situation had escalated between the 5 students and the ones celebrating Cinco De Mayo and the administrator had ignored the 5 students, I see that as a serious offense.

I'm confused, if you believe that the students were intentionally baiting, exactly what are you getting at? Are you saying that no action should be taken when students bait one another?

The discipline code is the most telling part, as the boys were not adhering to number 1,2, and 4 when they intentionally baited other students.

Ah, but a school is not a supermarket or a highway. It is not even public property, as so many people seem to misunderstand. The purpose of schools is not just to teach reading and math. Social interaction and being able to function in a community are huge parts of the educational process. They are addressed in the wording of school policies and mission statements. So basically: It is your obligation to be nice to people while at school. If you fail to do that, you can expect that life will be made difficult for you. Again, I think the administrator could have handled this with much more tact, but I think an action was necessary.

I would say it's typical of the Beth forums. WHich isn't a flame, just an observation on how they prefer their posting activity to be. It's also why I rarely go there. Again, no flame or anything, just an observation. They make their choices and its their right to do so. I'm guessing their forum is a lot bigger and more prone to insanity than in these parts. Hence the reason I also don't go near it.
