Top 10 sci fi films of the decade
I am glad to see Wall-E on the list as well. I honestly never would have thought of it, but after seeing it on the list, it definitely fits.

An interesting article about piracy
That's the way it went for me. No way I was buying BS2 after wasting my money on the first one. Thirded.

Mexifornia
It is my professional opinion that the administrator missed out on a teachable moment.

Mexifornia
That is ridiculous.

I don't mean to sound condescending here, but there does seem to be quite a disconnect between some of the posters here and what happens on a High School campus in California. The reason I called these kids punks is because I know them all too well, I deal with them on a daily basis. There is no great political statement behind their action. They wanted attention, they got it.

Ah, well then what about I Am Legend?

Everyone agrees that it SHOULDN'T be an issue. But the reality is it was.

Top 10 sci fi films of the decade
I'm not entirely sure I'd refer to 28 Days Later as sci-fi. I can see the argument for Eternal Sunshine though.

Top 10 sci fi films of the decade
I haven't seen quite a few of those. Is Artificial Intelligence the same as A.I? No Minority Report? I assume you left Avatar off because it is more fantasy than sci-fi. edit: Doh! Just checked the actual link you put in

It doesn't matter if they were green and tentacled, they were intentionally baiting another group.

I've already stated that I think it is incredibly wrong that a group of Mexican Americans would have a problem with other students wearing US regalia on Cinco De Mayo. I've also stated that the administrators did a piss poor job handling the situation, it was a teachable moment, not a disciplinary one. But quite a few folks seem willing to give the 5 boys a free pass here when their intent was clearly suspect.

It's a little late for that, Cinco De Mayo has inexplicably turned into a big deal. There really isn't any going back. However it can be turned into a positive event, celebrating Mexican culture and heritage, which is what most schools do. Folklorico dancing, Mariachi music, and churros are not a bad thing for a school to celebrate with. People keep bringing up St. Patrick's Day and Ireland as a comparison. I don't fully like that because we don't share a gigantic border with Ireland so the immigration was rather minimal in comparison. But lets be realistic here, this is about discrimination, which both Irish Americans and Mexican Americans have faced. These 5 kids were clearly interested in disrespecting Cinco de Mayo and the Mexican heritage of their classmates. There is nothing patriotic about their act, it's a punk move by punk kids. Given that their parents endorse their behavior, it is clear they have been raised to not respect other cultures. There is nothing redeeming about their actions.

Game 4 never happened, I know not what you folks are referring to.

More background on this school district - A few years back they lost a major lawsuit over gay and lesbian rights. A group of students sued them over their treatment by students and staff members.

My wife is an alum of the school, and I was told by her that bandanna's are indeed against the dress code.

On a side note, if these kids had done the same thing a little down the road in Salinas, they would have probably been shot. And how often do large groups act with reason and logic? Let's try to be a little realistic here. The five students have every right to make a statement on Cinco De Mayo by wearing US regalia, but it doesn't make it a good idea. And again, a school is a bad place for statements, distractions are supposed to be minimized.

I do think the administrator handled this fairly poorly. It was an educational moment, not a time for threats of suspension. I can think of half a dozen better solutions to this problem.

Probably not in unison.

The whole of California was claimed by the US after the Mexican-American War and made a state in 1850. The main thing is that the US and Mexico are culturally tied together, and they should be able to celebrate one another rather than being antagonistic.

Some of you are arguing way off in Ideal World rather than the Real World. Ideally, it wouldn't matter what these kids wore to school. But realistically it was inflammatory. You have a small group doing something stupid. You have a large group who is likely to react in a stupid way. Which is easier to police?
-
Mexifornia
The kids went out of their way to disrespect a rather large group. That behavior is what is ridiculous. I'll tell you exactly went on in their heads, because I work with kids like this every day. These 5 boys got together and said, "I'm starved for attention, so let's all wear something that will take away from the cultural celebration that happens on Cinco de Mayo. Since the Mexican flag is a the main symbol of this celebration, let's wear Old Glory to cause a distraction.*" *paraphrased and removed all the bad language and bad grammar.

Fallout: New Vegas
Actually I really like a few of the folks that have come over with the NV news, like Slowtrain (I believe that's how he got here.) But that is because they have taken part in other discussions. And I do appreciate Twinkie's honesty about being obsessed with Fallout 1 & 2. You are very dedicated and that is worth admiring. Although it's also slightly insane
