Everyone agrees that it SHOULDN'T be an issue. But the reality is it was.

I'm not entirely sure I'd refer to 28 Days Later as sci-fi. I can see the argument for Eternal Sunshine though.
-
I haven't seen quite a few of those. Is Artificial Intelligence the same as A.I? No Minority Report? I assume you left Avatar off because it is more fantasy than sci-fi. edit: Doh! Just checked the actual link you put in

It doesn't matter if they were green and tentacled, they were intentionally baiting another group.

I've already stated that I think it is incredibly wrong that a group of Mexican Americans would have a problem with other students wearing US regalia on Cinco De Mayo. I've also stated that the administrators did a piss poor job handling the situation, it was a teachable moment, not a disciplinary one. But quite a few folks seem willing to give the 5 boys a free pass here when their intent was clearly suspect.
-
It's a little late for that, Cinco De Mayo has inexplicably turned into a big deal. There really isn't any going back. However it can be turned into a positive event, celebrating Mexican culture and heritage, which is what most schools do. Folklorico dancing, Mariachi music, and churros are not a bad thing for a school to celebrate with. People keep bringing up St. Patrick's Day and Ireland as a comparison. I don't fully like that because we don't share a gigantic border with Ireland so the immigration was rather minimal in comparison. But lets be realistic here, this is about discrimination, which both Irish Americans and Mexican Americans have faced. These 5 kids were clearly interested in disrespecting Cinco de Mayo and the Mexican heritage of their classmates. There is nothing patriotic about their act, it's a punk move by punk kids. Given that their parents endorse their behavior, it is clear they have been raised to not respect other cultures. There is nothing redeeming about their actions.

Game 4 never happened, I know not what you folks are referring to.

More background on this school district - A few years back they lost a major lawsuit over gay and lesbian rights. A group of students sued them over their treatment by students and staff members.
-
My wife is an alum of the school, and I was told by her that bandanna's are indeed against the dress code.
-
On a side note, if these kids had done the same thing a little down the road in Salinas, they would have probably been shot. And how often do large groups act with reason and logic? Let's try to be a little realistic here. The five students have every right to make a statement on Cinco De Mayo by wearing US regalia, but it doesn't make it a good idea. And again, a school is a bad place for statements, distractions are supposed to be minimized.

I do think the administrator handled this fairly poorly. It was an educational moment, not a time for threats of suspension. I can think of half a dozen better solutions to this problem.
-
Probably not in unison.

The whole of California was claimed by the US after the Mexican-American War and made a state in 1850. The main thing is that the US and Mexico are culturally tied together, and they should be able to celebrate one another rather than being antagonistic.
-
Some of you are arguing way off in Ideal World rather than the Real World. Ideally, it wouldn't matter what these kids wore to school. But realistically it was inflammatory. You have a small group doing something stupid. You have a large group who is likely to react in a stupid way. Which is easier to police?
-
The kids went out of their way to disrespect a rather large group. That behavior is what is ridiculous. I'll tell you exactly went on in their heads, because I work with kids like this every day. These 5 boys got together and said, "I'm starved for attention, so let's all wear something that will take away from the cultural celebration that happens on Cinco de Mayo. Since the Mexican flag is a the main symbol of this celebration, let's wear Old Glory to cause a distraction.*" *paraphrased and removed all the bad language and bad grammar.

Actually I really like a few of the folks that have come over with the NV news, like Slowtrain (I believe that's how he got here.) But that is because they have taken part in other discussions. And I do appreciate Twinkie's honesty about being obsessed with Fallout 1 & 2. You are very dedicated and that is worth admiring. Although it's also slightly insane

It is pretty odd how Cinco de Mayo became a huge holiday in the US. Half of my family is living in Mexico, and it's practically a non-event there.

Oh please, if anyone on this forum has been a 'victim' in the Fallout 'vs' discussions it has been people who enjoy Fallout 3. You get called a retard here if you like Fallout 3. Fallout 3 was warmly received here originally. Sure, it wasn't perfect, but quite a few folks were enjoying it. Then Obsidian got NV and we ended up with a few new folks, and most of them treated FO3 like some sort of crime against humanity. The thing is most of the regulars don't really go in the Fallout threads anymore, it's just a few people and most of those are a bit rabid. I wander in occasionally hoping for a new JE Sawyer tidbit.

Also, most schools are not in session during the 4th of July, but if a group of students were wearing Mexican Flag bandana's on a Veteran's Day celebration, they would probably be told to remove them as well.

This school is a few blocks from my house. One oddity in this story is that the School District has taken the opposite side of the administrators at the school site. Usually they back the administrators or at least hedge, but they said straight up they disagree with the decision. I'm against political statements in K-12 schools period. If the shirts were causing a disruption, then the students should not wear them. This can go for any T-shirt. And you know what, it's in bad taste to wear a US flag on Mexican Heritage Day on purpose. If it was accidental, then that's fine, the students would probably not make an issue of changing. I personally would have been embarrassed if I had shown up with my US flag shirt on Cinco de Mayo, because it's a stupid thing to do. It's like going to a baseball game wearing a hockey jersey. You aren't expected to wear a baseball jersey, but you don't need to embarrass yourself.

I can definitely agree that games are easier and more dumbed down. As you said, there are pros and cons to that outcome. I miss the good strategy titles, but I like being able to jump in and play easily enough.
-
It is really tough to actually prove that games are getting shorter. When I was growing up, adventure games were king and you could finish those in a matter of a few hours. Early FPS games were also incredibly short. In fact it is fairly amazing that the price of games has only moved a smidge given the huge increase in costs that game developers have faced. You could argue specifically that RPG's have gotten shorter, but then you get games like Oblivion, Risen, and Two Worlds that are absolutely huge. I really see this as a "When I was younger, things were better" argument. The reality tends to be that you were easier to please when you were younger.
-
Really? Did you enjoy the original? I did, but I'm always worried about sequels.
-
I'm a little surprised at the going rate of pride myself. On topic, I bought Awakenings yesterday. I'm not quite into it yet. I might be burnt on DA.

It's less a question of legality and more a question of right and wrong.
